Kariton Sorbetes - Chinatown reviews
21Unique southeast asian flavours. I love their ube & pandan! It has nice bits (great texture & flavour) in the gelato. I can’t wait to try more flavours next time. Highly recommend
If youu are looking for laneway arcade eating opportunities, this is your location for dessert gelato. Seating is on half height plastic stools, which are very reminiscent of those throughout SE Asia.
About 20 choices were available and were natural flavors with many tropical fruits, including durian fruit.
This hole in the wall ice cream place has a special place in my heart, because it shows off the flavours and roots of Filipino cuisine and culture. Some food items are named after Filipino things, and the flavours are typical of what you would expect to have in the Philippines. You can easily miss this place while walking through, because they have no large attention-seeking sign aside from the spotlight with their logo on the floor. The interior is minimalist, and has a few low chairs for those who want to enjoy their ice cream in-store. Their menu is projected above while waiting in line. But it would be better if they projected both slides at the same time, instead of alternating and waiting for the other slide to reappear to double check your intended order and the flavours. They even have some merch on sale, for those interested in getting any. I would consider myself a frequent customer, whenever I pass through the area in the CBD.
Busy Filipino dessert place with a heap of interesting flavours to choose from. The keso and Milo dinosawr flavours will have me coming back for more!
The purple ice cream is absolutely delicious. A must! I would not choose it if it wasn't to share with my partner. It tastes like a biscuit with jam. Super comfy and yummy
Generally good service, always a buzz and love the new flavours. Don't forget to give the pre-done Icecream cakes and small foods a try! Love the Filipino flavours!
I was very full from lunch and made a stop because husband wanted ice cream. Decided to sample the ube ice cream… I was in disbelief at how good it was I just had to get a scoop for myself! It was just heavenly, the PERFECT ube ice cream. So creamy, smooth and just ARGHHH I really want another scoop now. Massive love for this place. A must visit every time I’m in Melbourne.
My new favourite ice-cream shop.
The sensory experience is balanced and deep. Think chewy, crunchy, creamy, sweet and salty.
We had the Turon, Pandan and Ube. The banana flavour was strong in the Turon, but you could still taste the black sesame. I preferred the Pandan and the Ube (my top choice). The Ube had a gooey fudge that was salty yet caramelized, whereas the Pandan had chunks of jelly and coconut.
My husband's verdict: "Would buy by the kariton"
Lots of flavour selection, our of what we had my personal preference rankinh is:
Pandan
Ube
Guyabano
Mango
Leche flan
I would like to try the other flavours next and the ice cream sandwiches, popsicles and drumsticks all looked good too!
Price is very reasonable, 1 scoop is enough for me, actually even 2/3 of it is good for me (though I'm not super big on ice cream so that's why). Will come back for sure!
Btw, there is always a line but it's fast moving so don't be intimidated by it.
Plus cute place too!
Amazing, creative flavours that evoked the so-called "dirty ice cream" in the Philippines. Loved the panucha flavour and will come back to try the others. The biggest downside, though, is it's really just a takeaway place with just a few stools and no decor.
Finally tried this after months! The shop was a bit hard to find in CBD. It was like a hole in the wall as it doesn’t have a signage hanging. I just noticed because of the projected logo on the floor.
We tried Turon, Buko Pandan, and Tiramisu.
The turon tasted familiar – I know I had it before only to realise it taste like Banoffee Pie! It’s good!
Buko Pandan tasted very artificial. The coconut strips were tough. Wouldn’t recommend!
Tiramisu was our fave amongst the three.
It’s also a little on the pricier side. Next time, we’ll try the soft serve taho, Kalamansi Hinebra and maybe Ube Halaya.
Amazing Ube ice cream! Can’t wait to go back. Definitely worth getting a tub of ice cream to bring home to eat
Freindly staff, unique flavours that are south east asian based (pandan, durian etc), can have tasters as well.
The seating situation is a bit limited with little stools here and there but didn't feel it warranted being marked down for that.
Visited on a Saturday night and it was very busy with a line crossing over 2 corresponding stores. Waited for over 30 minutes in the line. The menu was displayed via projector onto the curved roof. Watch your head as you line up as the projector is positioned quite low.
Servers were hard working and efficiently with the long line but I wonder if during very busy periods there could be a limit on the number of flavours tasted to speed things along.
Ordered 3 scoops on a cone ($9.50)
Ube Halava (purple yam gelato, purple yam fudge, blackberry jam and roasted coconut curds) - the ube flavour was ok and could have been more pronounced. More creamier than my preference but others may prefer this.
Buko Pandan (coconut and pandan sorbet, pandan jelly, young coconut, toasted rice flakes) - similiar to the Ube the pandan could have been more pronouced.
Panucha (peanut caramel gelato, caramelised peanuts) - my favourite flavour of the lot. Strong peanut flavour with a slight salty aftertaste. One of the best if not the best nutty flavoured icecream I have ever had.
Will be back and dry some of the other flavours but will definately go for the Panucha again!
This place sells really good gourmet ice cream. The price is reasonable. I personally recommend their buko pandan flavour and durian chiffon
The buko pandan has very nice pandan flavour with few jelly added on
The durian chiffon has a very pleasant durian flavour and they added chiffon cake, so it makes the ice cream not too heavy in texture (even my friend who doesn’t like durian commented that he can tolerate this ice cream)
Will definitely come back
ORDERED:
Ube Halaya in a cup: Purple yam gelato with purple yam fudge, blackberry jam and caramelised coconut curds ($6.58pp)
REVIEW:
Kariton is the best. Unique southeast flavours, I also adore their Footscray (original) location.
There's something magical about Filipino flavours in gelato that you just can't pass up. Ube has a vanilla like flavour, that's sweet and earthy and it comes through so well here. They've also got strips of coconut that add texture.
It's just not smooth like your Italian gelato, but it's more interesting!
I think this location has a reduced menu compared to Footscray. Nonetheless, Kariton is an excellent place to stop for a quick dessert after dinner with your mates.
Their ice creams are great but the Braso de Mercedes is a no no. The ice cream inside is citrus flavour, not embodying the flavours of the real Braso cake. Most importantly, the cake’s so dry! It’s not worth the price considering it’s the same value as a Le Tao cake and close to a Brunetti cake. Wouldn’t try their cakes again but would come back for ice cream of course.
Tried the Ube and special flavours with passionfruit, guava and pineapple. Overall the ice cream was creamy and I liked coming across little chunks of ingredients.
Overall I found it alright being a sweet tooth. But others found the ice cream and tofu sundae too sweet.
Was hard to pick flavours as I didn't know many and didn't really have any hankerings. Staff were friendly and have us taste tests to help. The cone was crisp. Generous scoops.
Trip to Melbourne from ages ago - ice cream desserts from @kariton.sorbetes! It's so good that they are in the CBD now. No need to trek all the way out to Footscray anymore.
.
Tofu soft serve ice cream: we've always wanted to try this out because of the uniqueness! The tofu flavour is subtle but it's definitely there. Super yummy!
.
Ube and Turon flavours: can't go wrong with any of their flavours to be honest! But I can't go without ube.
The icecreams are awesome. Cake, specially the BRAZO DE MERCEDES, shared with friends and same comments (somehow disappointed). Sponge is dry…. Like an old sponge cake.
We probably got a bad batch.
They removed the comment on their IG page so here you go dear.
