KARÉ カレー reviews
21Good portions. I felt the beef curry was more delicious than their original sauce. Unfortunately the day I went, many things were not available on the menu. However, will come back again when they are back to normal.
Decided to pop in before heading back to Sydney - I have read the mixed reviews on this cafe however still decided to go as we love japanese foods the curry is definitely different than regular curry and we loveee it! However the price and meat portions can be improved.
Expensive, yet delicious. Their curry sauce was on the sweet/sour side. Generous portion and each bowl has the perfect balance of meat, rice and sauce. Love the pickled vegetables!
Don't recommend the Signature Beef Curry. For $25, it came with just four small chunks of beef. The Wagyu Scotch Katsu Curry is a slight improvement with a decent portion, but the beef is unexpectedly tough for wagyu.
On the brighter side, the Tuna Yukke Salad and Citron Noir are pretty decent. However, it's definitely not worth queuing for over 40 minutes for this experience.
Friends invited me to this place, went here for first time, and found it pretty good, a little bit disappointed that the pork katsu curry wasn't available.
Beef curry pan is good
Red bean pan a bit oily
Katsu curry chicken is ok and over price.
Will come back for beef curry pan
We had the chicken katsu curry and wagyu scotch katsu curry. The curry has a sour, slightly sweet taste with a runny almost tomato like texture with no hint of any heat. Not sure if this is meant to be how this type of curry is to taste but it would probably be a let down to most curry lovers - including specifically Japanese curries.
Meal was edible with the wagyu scotch katsu being pretty good on its own while the chicken katsu was less generously served. Staff were attentive and friendly and the space is pleasant and simple. The pastries are decent enough and I wouldn't mind coming back for a drink and a snack.
Kare is a newly opened cafe specialising in Japanese curry located right next to Queen Vic Market. They have a huge variety of different curry options, side dishes, drinks, curry pans, desserts and definitely the biggest range of Japanese curry options I’ve seen in Melbourne. We tried the-
VEGAN CHICKEN KATSU CURRY ($23.00) panko vegan chicken, KARÉ original curry, rice, fukujinzuke, onion-bulb pickles
VEGAN CURRY ($19.00) KARE original curry, renkon, okra, pumpkin, capsicum, eggplant, rice, fukujinzuke, onion- bulb pickles
VEGETARIAN CURRY PAN ($8)
ANKO MOCHI PAN ($8) red bean mochi
MATCHA MOCHI COOKIE ($5.90)
HOJICHA MOCHI COOKIE ($5.50)
TUNA YUKKE SALAD ($16.70) tuna, okra, avocado, nori, sesame, garlic wasabi soy
ICHIGO ICED SPRITZ ($8.00) strawberries and sparkling tonic
MATCHA LATTE ($8.00)
The curry was good, it was tangy and zesty with a stronger onion flavour, and less sweet compared to the ones I’m used to. The mock chicken schnitzel was really good, had great textures and would recommend this if you’re looking for a plant based option! They do sell out of particular items quick but the variety is huge (so many mock meats, vegan options, and meat options (ofc) including rice, udon, cookies, and side dishes and all things curry) so there’s heaps to choose from regardless.
I quite liked the side dishes we got. Most notably the vegetarian curry pan, with carrot mushroom onion filling, was our favourite and they nailed the flavours of that filling. The red bean one is also highly recommended, it was warm and the perfect texture- gooey and chewy on the inside and hot and crispy on the outside. The mochi cookies had district flavours and wasn’t too sweet.
The drinks were great too! So even if you’re not feeling like a full meal, they serve all your cafe style drinks (and also alcoholic beverages… aesthetic style). I really liked the ichigo strawberry, perfect amount of sweetness and it was tasty and complemented my meal well. Really cute cafe that’s worth visiting whether you’re craving some warm curry or just want to visit a cute Japanese cafe!
Discovered this new Japanese cafe located just next to the @vicmarket!
@kare_melbourne is your on stop cafe where you can enjoy some unique lattes, cocktails and hearty curry pans
We were invited to try the curry dishes and yummy latte drinks and left with no complaints.
The chicken curry was very tender and delicious, generous portion of rice and gravy.
Their beef curry was slow cooked to perfection, super tender as well.
Strawberry latte was a delight for $8! We also tried some mocktails from their home made range.
If you don’t prefer rice and curry, the chicken Karaage was perfectly seasoned and a treat! I would absolutely devour this every time I can.
These were my top favourites and would be delighted to visit again.
The Japanese music and aesthetic is very relaxing, specially on a sunny weekend. Super experience! Thanks @kare_melbourne and your friendly staff for looking after us from start to finish.
Space could be bigger that’s only
Con. But rest is perfect
Super nice Japanese eatery with great menu items that weren’t just standard curry and rice. The cold curry udon is an absolute standout but I can see how some people may not enjoy the texture of the yams and okra. Tuna Yukke salad is also amazing and something I’ll be thinking about for days! Wish we could’ve tried more pastries, staff had asked if we wanted it warmed up which was lovely.

I chose keema curry. The Indian curry was a little spicy, but the spiciness gave it a refreshing taste, perfect for the recent hot weather. The signature beef curry was also delicious. I like the combination of curry and beef flavors.
I got Keema curry. The Indian style curry was a bit spicy, but it has a nice kick of flavor to it, and it's perfect for the warm weather. The signature beef curry was delicious too! The flavor of curry and beef was well balanced, I really like it.
I think the red bean paste butter croissant is perfect! The deep aroma and taste of butter, the sweetness of red beans, and the crisp and fluffy characteristics of croissants. The balance of taste and characteristics is amazing!
The anko butter croissant is the perfect pastry. The rich taste and aroma of butter, slight sweetness of the azuki and the crispy and fluffy texture of the croissant has a perfect balance of flavor and texture.
For drinks, I chose matcha me and soybean flour latte.
For drinks, we got a matcha latte and kinako latte.
Recommended Japanese food in Melbourne! Please go and try it
Would definitely recommend it! Please do check out this restaurant!
One of the items we ordered was the signature beef curry. I expected something a bit more spicy as a curry however it was no spice at all, flavours were more sweet and tangy. I’m not sure if this is what the curry was meant to be like but didn’t satisfy my curry craving.
Initially this came out just warm/a bit higher than room temperature (found this a bit odd), I did bring this to the attention of the waiter who resolved it quickly and brought me back a full serve of hot beef curry.
I put service as a 3 star, whilst was redeemed I don’t think customers should have to outline this in the first place. Ordering is done through a QR code.
I also ordered a Hojicha latte which was quite small for the $8.70 + $0.15 service fee.
There is also a service fee that is automatically topped on top of what you order.
All the other food was okay.
Omg the beef curry rice is soooooo good! The kind of Japanese curry I love! The azuki matcha latte also nice!
Cute Japanese brunch place with lots of food options. Food was good and I really liked the red bean mochi pan
I liked the tuna salad, curry beef bun would have been nicer hotter. Didn’t like the taste of the curry.
@kare_melbourne Located opposite Queen Vic Market Melbourne is an amazingly cute spot serving the beat comfort Japanese food.
From a nice selection of bakery to serving coffee and drinks to serving delicious Katsu curries it has a bit for everyone.
We had:
cocktail and iced tea
Chicken Katsu curry
the radish salad
Pork mince curry with rice (which was sooo good)
sweet croissant and cookies
We love Japanese food and @kare_melbourne hits the spot just right!
We would definitely recommend to visit this cute little gem.
I finally got to try out this curry place I've been wanting to visit.
It's a great Japanese curry spot with good prices and a cozy vibe. We walked in at 5pm on Friday night and got a seat, but it fills up fast.
They're open for brunch and evenings, offering tasty cocktails and wines, a perfect place to unwind after work.
Wagyu Scotch Katsu Curry
This top dish is amazing! Thin, crispy crust and thick, tender Wagyu slices go perfectly with the curry.
Cold Udon Curry
Cold udon with hot curry is surprisingly tasty. Creamy yam paste, okra, and cold udon taste very silky, and the curry with seafood cakes is flavorful.
Appetizers
Lots of choices, so be careful not to order too much
Nasu Miso Brulee
Soft and tasty miso-marinated eggplant with a hint of Creme Brûlée flavor.
Tuna Yuke Salad
Tuna with grated yam sauce and okra, a smooth, tangy delight - highly recommend!
Truffle Tofu Tomato Ceviche
Didn't catch the truffle flavor, but it's a refreshing appetizer.
Grapefruit Sour
A fun DIY juice experience—squeeze it yourself. Just a heads up, it needs a bit of strength.
Azuki Matcha Latte
Their red bean matcha latte is delicious! The dense red bean with rich matcha warms the heart.

Another standout is the Cold Curry Udon paired with a crispy fried vegetable fritter. Save room for dessert because the sweet red bean daifuku is a treat that rounds off the meal perfectly.
Went to check out the hype for their Japanese curry and would say IT’S REAL! Absolute flavourful curries and their pans are amazing too. Personally love their anko red bean mochi pan the most and black sesame latte is a must try too!
Specialised in Japanese curry, the dishes were so tasty and nicely presented. The pastries were unique, warm, fluffy and full of flavours. They also have a good variety of drinks that are tasty and vibrant.
