Hunky Dory Fish & Chips Templestowe Lower

Very poor food. I ordered fish bite and scallops but the batter so thick and hard. Sweet potato chip use to be thick and nice deep fried but yesterday too thin after cook no potato left. For $8 tiny bowl? Anyway, I have ordered salad take away for lunch today before I get the food as well whatever in there salad bowl is like I eat sand. It is really hurt my teeth. Sorry not worth $9 little salad bowl. Terrible ever! Not ever go there again

First time trying Hunky Dory, we are regulars at Tommy Ruffs Fishbar and Rex Hunts D'Lish Fish, and this is comparable although slightly cheaper and more focused on takeaway I feel.
A long narrow store with open kitchen at the front it's located in very busy Macedon Square shopping centre.
A very substantial menu compared to a standard Mom & Pop Fish and Chipperey.
Bright cheerful vibe with lots of seating indoors and out.
Staff were friendly and helpful selecting from the menu.
Like Tommy Ruffs they are liscenced and have house brands of alcoholic beverages.
We had a couples fishpack with flake, potatoe cake, fried calamari and a fried dimmy, tartare and large serve of chips.
As well a grilled Mediterranean Flake pack which included a large grilled prawn, Calimari ring and chips.
The fried Flake was excellent, moist and flavourful with a light crispy batter and a generous size. The Calimari rings were likewise superb, huge, tender, perfectly cooked.
The grilled flake was some of the best grilled fish we've ever had with an extraordinarily delicious marinade on the perfectly cooked slab of fish.
Chips and Potatoes cakes were also excellent, crispy with a light fluffy centre and generous serves.
The fried Dim Sims were unexceptional with a thin soft pastry, rather than the crispy, bubbly coating we expected.
We all enjoyed our meals as take away, only having to wait about 10 minutes to get our meals ready to go.
We'll definitely be back as it's our local.although we noticed there is a competitor directly across the road worth trying.
MAIN negative is NO PICKLED ONIONS!

Any Fish and Chipperey worth its name has a jar of that crispy oniony deliciousness sitting on the counter.
We've noticed that many fish and Chipperies over the last few years apologise for not having them.
Not sure why.

Really great fish n chips at a reasonable price. Calamari is also fantastic! Dine in is best for the freshly fried stuff.

I've always been a fan of Hunky Dory's since my first one opened locally. This one does not disappoint. 4.5 stars.

Customer service was top notch. The food was high quality and I requested it be cooked crispy. They delivered it just the way I like it.

The Mediterranean grilled seafood and salad pack was the highlight. Everyone loved the grilled fish. The giant "Coupled up" fried pack was gigantic and really filled us up.

The only thing was the Fri pack looked a bit sparse presentation wise. Probably would have looked more full on a bed of chips. And the fish offered as part of the meals were on the cheaper side- basa and hake. For $34 for the coupled up, would have expected flake as standard.

Also, the batter wasn't as light as other HDs. But was still enjoyable. Just didn't have the usual light crunch.

But apart from that and meal fish selections, Thank you HD!

Really tasty Barramundi. Will be back to try more. It looks like a small place but the place is actually very big.

Husband wanted F&C. Asked neighbour if could recommend one. Hunky Dory it was and I have been sent back 3 times now to get his FIsh, chips and potato cakes. Friendly staff, efficient and clean. Know will be sent back again and again.

Food was great, affordable and quick. JJ was fantastic host as well. 10/10. Would eat there again.

Finally, fish and chips but with healthy options! Try their Hunky bowls, they are a great combination of flavours, healthy and massive serves.

Awesome place for seafood lovers. We had "Grilled seafood and salad" with added chips which was delicious and I highly recommend it. Staff was friendly and the place had a nice atmosphere.

Got a takeaway tonight. We ordered a hunky dory bowl and a piece of grilled fish and a potato cake. Got home. No sight of potato cake. And the broccoli in the hunky bowl smelled off and didn’t taste fresh. They were not even busy and yet messed up a very simple takeaway order. I won’t go back there again and strongly suggest whoever gets takeaway, make sure to check your order before you leave the shop. Absolutely disappointing.

Love your salads, my son loves your burgers, chips are average,
Calamari rings are average,
Steamed dim sims are good,
Service is awsome,

Have gotten takeout here multiple times with no issues, but today both our salads had lots of dirt/sand in it, and one of the orders had a weird blue colouring on the fish.

2 fillet in $20 before, with plenty extras.now $25 for only one piece of salmon Fillet, have to fill the stomach with lots chips. Was my mistakes I did not even ask the potion with $25.

You are welcome to overprice the menu, but at least give me the same portion as before.

The size of portion is small and staff are not friendly.we found BUGs in greek salad, so awful. The flake pack fried overcooked.

Was pretty underwhelmed.it's just a fish and chip place.at triple the price. I couldn't even tell I was eating fish with the huge amount of lettuce cucumber and tomato the fish was so thin.never seen anything like it.much rather go to a fish and chip place.

Greeted by staff member. Sat us down, told we can order via QR code or you at counter in person. Ordered grilled flakes, green salad and chips. Arrived fairly quickly, plenty of people dining, so good sign. Blue grenadier was out of stock, so ordered grilled flake, Greek salad and chips. Flake was nice, chips a little overcooked.

Update:
Been a while since I last visited, I was surprised to see the place completely empty on Sunday at lunch time! But it didn’t take long to figure out why, the food quality took a deep dive, the fish batter was thick and felt like leather then it left a horrible after taste because they added too much baking soda also the fries were dry and didn’t taste good, I hope the owner read this and take quick action, hate to see this place fail!

It is late in the day and I needed a snack. I only ordered a single piece of flake and OMG! The presentation, the seasoning, the texture, just wow! Definately coming back here when next in the area!

Nice panko fish burger when done well but like most things here can be hit and miss with quality not just at this HD but others as well.
