Gilson South Yarra reviews
76Hard to grab the attention of the waiter in charge of our section, so much so one feels intentionally ignored. The food was nice. It was busy when we went so it was hard to have a decent conversation.
I’m gluten intolerant and this is one of my favourite GF pasta places in Melbourne. They get really good spaghetti and their sauces are so good! The pizzas are also good, and it’s handy that you can get a GF wood fired bread to go with antipasti. The vibe is probably not for everyone but I go just for the food!
Not good for family with kids, even not small and noisy kids. Staff will only offer you seats indoor and beside the door. Pizza is quite good, but lunch start 12: 00, staff not allow us make order even it was 11: 55am. Very very strict
Quality dropped significantly! Last year was one of my favorite places, this year went twice and was very disappointed. Food is not the same!
Well overpriced food. Service was terrible. Our food came out before our drinks. And when the drinks came it was the wrong order. Waiters were completely overwhelmed, you could see they were taking on more customers than they had capacity for. Almost every table around us had the wrong orders or weren’t getting their food on time. The lady that seemed like a Manager was unapproachable and avoided any interaction with customers, while the waiters were running around trying to cater to customers.
Wouldn’t dine here again.
Atmosphere really holds this place together. We dined for dinner, late on a Saturday evening, however if I was to return I would be sure to come during the day for a drinks and snacks vibe. The pizza sauce and cheese were high quality and tasted great, however the dough itself was lacking. Upon picking up a piece the cheese begins to slide off as the dough just droops down, seeming undercooked in the centre, however the crust was close to burnt. The pastas were just average. Waiters did not ask if anyone required parmesan cheese or pepper to taste. We struggled the entire night to grab the attention of a staff member, which was unfortunate.
Five of us visited Gilson in South Yarra on Friday night. We ordered a range of antipasto including wood-fired bread, burrata, prosciutto and veggies. For mains, we ordered the beef ragu, pizza, steak and salad. The food was quite exorbitantly priced, but also very delicious. Thank you for the fine dining experience!
Called a week in advance 13th July & made a booking over the phone. Apparently now my booking is lost or was never taken. Extremely disappointed & angry. Won't be bothering to rebook here again
The food was super delicious and the location is just amazing!
Unfortunately, we waited quite some time for our tiramisu and in the tomato pasta was a piece of bacon - that explains the "only" 4 stars.
This weekend we celebrated my sisters baby shower in the private dining room and it was amazing. The food was sooo delicious and the event space was perfect. I could not speak more highly of Morgan who helped plan everything leading up to the event and to the beautiful Opal who on the day helped everything run smoothly and was beyond helpful. If you are looking to host your next event somewhere I could not recommend the Gilson enough
Got ripped off. We were told it would be $65 per head.
When we paid it came close to $80 per head.
My 13 year took 2 bites for $80. No kids prices.
Surcharges that were never mentioned are not even on the receipt. Receipt attached and it does not add up. It should have been $411.99.
I’ll be getting it looked into. I’ll give this restaurant a chance to fix it if not I’m off to get it investigated.
More to come.
Gilson is one of my favourite places to dine in Melbourne! The service is always great, food doesn’t take too long and is absolutely delicious! The Cacio e Pepe and pepperoni pizza are a must! The prices are reasonable too.
If I could give this place zero star I would.
Food was bland. No flavour. When you go to a restaurant you wanna eat foods you can’t make at home.
We ordered:
Lamb cutlets, octopus and the lobster pasta.
Please do not waste your money here. You will be only paying for the atmosphere. This is thanks to Instagram overhyping this restaurant for no reason.
Lamb cutlets were soaked in oil, octopus had a off fishy taste to it and so did the lobster in the pasta, therefore it wasn’t fresh.
Their lamb ragu is amazing. Super happy with the food. The staff can be occasionally rude, would be great if they could find a replacement.
We had a lovely lunch after our walk along the tan with our dogs. They were very accomodating, gave the dogs a treat, some water and were quick to serve us. Our food was fabulous as well! Cute vibe
We had the most fantastic lunch in Gilson's lovely private dining room last week.
It was our second time in the dining room and we are already wondering what event we can celebrate there next!
Morgan and Loren are both delightful to deal with, the organisation was simple and straight forward, the service on the day was spot on and the food and wine were superb.
Impossible to fault.
Seated indoors towards the back, no windows and front door closed and we had flies flying around us the whole duration of our meal. Food is not good either - flounder and mussels were not fresh. The wood fired flat bread with side dishes - nowhere near as good as totti’s Sydney. Only good dish we had was the chicken wombok salad.
One of my favourite restaurants, visited countless times both day and night, takeaway and dine in.everytime: delicious.beautifully located and perfect for outdoor casual dining in the warmer weather, but also as a luxurious date night inside.it can be anything.wine and nibbles or a all out italian feast.i love their selection of antipasti which pairs beautifully with their woodfired bread.pastas are also super fresh, tasty and generous! Don't skip their fries too, they are tasty and addictive (however i believe they have now changed to a more thicker chip than frites.their tira is also giant yet light and indulgent.honestly all the food is faultless.service had become slightly slower and less attentive in recent years and as its popularity has grown, but the food is so delicious and vibe so nice it goes unbothered.i always see a range of crowds and ages here, there is something for everyone.gilson is a must visit, and again and again. (these pictures are from multiple visits over 3-4 years and some items may not still be available).
Gorgeous spot right near the gardens, and the portions were generous. I just don't think it's as strong as the other options nearby, and the service left a bit to be desired.
I have hosted events in Gilson Privato a couple of times and had wonderful experiences. The food/beverage, service and private dining space are all wonderful. I look forward to continuing to dine here consistently in the future.
