Gasthaus on Queen

Pretty authentic Austrian food. However, portions are a bit small and hence it felt overpriced (I had the Rindergulasch with Spätzle and the amount of noodles was just a small handful)

Fantastic, authentic Austrian/German food with friendly staff who gave the best dish suggestions to try (the pork ribs were incredibly delicious!) not to mention all the good beers available too. Would highly recommend!

This is the first time we are trying an Austrian restaurant. The menu looked very similar to German restaurants like Munich or Hofbrahaus. The charcuterie board is very interesting with something that looked like pate and cured fish. The pork schnitzel is thin and juicy, and comes with this berry sauce which reminds me of the one you get at IKEA. The star was the crispy pork belly which has this amazing crackle and comes with gravy sauce that works well with both the pork and the roasted vegetables. Service is friendly but a little slow.

We've been visiting here on and off since they've opened in between COVID lockdowns, and the food and hospitality here is exceptional. Christian and his staff are very friendly and attentive, the food is Austrian but there's a couple of items that reminds us of local food in southern Germany (and it's not the tourist kind of food you find at the Hofbrahaus!). We love it so much that we chose Gasthaus for our wedding lunch, and Christian was very detailed in his answers and he was incredibly helpful from his first replied email all the way to our actual day. Our wedding lunch turned out to be fabulous, the food and drinks were already top notch as a regular customer, but this was another level. Starters, mains and dessert banquet were plenty, they were delicious and hearty. It left a lasting impression on us and all our friends, that one of them already plan ahead their future work function at the Gasthaus while he was in the middle of eating his main course (or was it starters?). If you like a restaurant with a cozy atmosphere that you can relax and enjoy, where food and beer will leave you happy in heart and stomach, I highly recommend this place. Great place with authentic Austrian cuisine. Very friendly staff. I enjoyed Rindsrouladen with red cabbage and Apfelstrudel. The ideal place when you need a break from Burgers or Asian food.

Went here for a quick afternoon lunch on Sunday.

We just missed out on the lunch special 12- 2pm but ordered the Bratwurst and my mate ordered the schnitzel.

Bratwurst was absolutely delicious.

Would highly recommend if your around Queen st.

If you're looking for a break from Italian food in Melb CBD and you're after a quiet, late night spot to eat then I'd recommend this place. I think the servings are generous, the food is delicious and freshly prepared before your eyes and it's worth the money.
My only complaint would be that I found the high stools a bit uncomfortable and difficult to sit at over the course of a meal - but that's probably just down to personal preference.
Overall, my experience was great and I would definitely go back.

The best Austrian/German food I have ever eaten in my 15 years in Australia. We had the rouladen and schweinsbraten which I can recommend 100%! I was blown away from the menue - it’s so traditional with Spatzle, knodel und traditional beverages. Even almdudler! I have tried German eateries in Brisbane, Adelaide und others in Melbourne which all have lost quality and charm. We definitely will be back next time we visit Melbourne.

We had the Wiener Schnitzel and Apple Strudel, both were delicious. Will definitely come back to try the rest of the menu.

Quite simply the best veal schnitzel I've ever had in any restaurant anywhere, including in Vienna.
Accompanying that was a superb imported apple cider which was vastly superior to any other I've tried.
Add to that, friendly service and food arriving in a reasonable time and my only complaint is that the restaurant is in Melbourne and I live in Sydney. It's a long way to travel just for dinner. But without doubt, next time I'm in Melbourne, I'll be back at Gasthaus on Queen.

Overall a great experience. Christian the owner is a great host. The staff and the service was amazing. Very enjoyable and traditional Austrian food, wine and beers.

Christian and his team accommodated our group of 10+1 baby with minimal fuss. He also took his time to explain the menu and provide beer recommendations.

Every food item we ordered - pretzels, sausages, pork knuckles and schnitzels - you can tell they absolutely use the best available produce in Australia to prepare these dishes with love.

This restaurant is a gem. We will be coming back again!

Best Germanic food in Melbourne with an Austrian bent. Amazing service, great portions and a rare selection of beers. Price can be high because you may indulge in a few too many beers and schnapps.

The meal does disappoint and it's been a long time since Berlin and had a schnitzel cooked in butter! Good food, great service and great wheat beers. Will definitely being come back for the pork knuckle!

Simply the best Pretzels I’ve ever tasted outside of Bavaria! Well done on seriously an authentic experience outside of Germany! Really enjoyed Gasthaus and will now be a regular go to for me when in Melbourne!

I’ve been to Gasthaus more than five times and the experience is consistently amazing! Chris is a delight to talk to and get recommendation on dishes and schnapps. The serves are very filling and the quality of the service is unmatched. I dare to say this is my favourite restaurant in Melbourne for the unique combo of factors I mentioned. Love it!

Das Gasthaus ist immer einen Besuch wert. This German restaurant is always worth a visit. We took the trout for two people which was excellent which was matched with a delicious wine. The music playlist brought back some great memories from the past and present.
