Hi my name is Emisoi Sheridan, I srarted working with EPS since 2007 2009. It happened when I had just finished up a job that I loved for 5 years at a pharmacutical wharehouse. So practically looking for employment at that moment. When one night taking my boy to footy training i met Lawrence Mauga Reid whom he brought his boy the same age as my son who was playing for the same team. So he then asked me if I had a smart son and i said yea I do. We started chatting about a pottential job for my son. As a youth worker. But I said how about me? Im smart too hehe. And i think I will be a good worker and i started selling myself there. Quote im a ex police woman and i do volunteer work at church as a youth teacher etc etc. Well that convo ended in us exchanging phone numbers. I was then introduced to his co founders Daniel Fitisemanu and Andrew Marino and a team of 8 people. One of the first ever Agency for youth work. Where we we worked at DHS units, wesley, secure, salvation army, berry street, orana, life without Barriers, Gordon Care, anglicare, vacca, vista, mary mckillop, even alice spring working with the aborigonal children.
I was hired and began working with my first assigned unit where a client was verbally abusing myself via phone. Stating if you dont bring my take away where I am right now. Dont forget i have female client with me at the moment. This client carried on with his threat. 'I will come over with a baseball bat and smash up the house abd hit you with the baseball bat. Dont forget its my first ever shift with Resi. Not knowing what to do I looked ar the young person im with and she told me dont worry his always like that well just get our food and go back to unit.i did not sleep that night as i was doing a sleep over. The next day the young man showed up with police and looked at me went straight to his room. He was a tiny lad with a big mouth. Moral of story is that incident did not stop me from going to work.
I gained a lot of experience working for different organisations. As well as all the training and certification and diplomas offered while working in this field.
In the year 2016 we were the first ever agency to gain employment at Malmsbury and Parkville youth justice dept. Under DHS.
Thoroughly enjoyed working with young people in youth justice. Its all about we built a rapor with this young people and well be okay. More like engaging with them and have a chit chat. But we have to make surevto watch our backs.they could flip at any moment. This is why its it very important to do all the training offered and work well.
Im now a woman in my 60s and I still continued working in resi casually due to my move. I will continue to support our Agency as we provide well trained workers in resi and youth justice.
