Duchess of Spotswood reviews
84Best spot for breakfast this side of the river. Great food / coffee and run by an amazing family, can't recommend enough
This cute little cafe has the most tasty good! Very child friendly with a cubbyhouse in the courtyard. But not very clean
Such a local gem. Lovely owners and one of the best chilli scramble spots I’ve found in Melbourne.
This was once a very good place to enjoy a good coffee and brunch. I am not sure if it has changed owner. But the quality of the food, service and most importantly coffee has gone downhill. Had chilli scramble egg, egg was overcooked, hardly 2 slices of chilli, sourdough bread were the tiniest. Strong latte tasted like a regular shot latte. Hubby ordered a cappuccino and my latte had more foam. Kids ham cheese sandwich only 2x single piece of ham. I am confident this is not owned by the same owner previously and sadly we will not be returning to once a well known cafe for its quality.
We were looking for a kid friendly place and found this, but I wouldn't recommend it. The food was ok but it was pretty basic, not great, and the place was dirty - the table and chairs were cleaned, but the floor definitely wasn't, my toddler's chicken nugget fell on the floor and upon picking it up within seconds, it also picked up what looked like dog hair, dust and dirt all over it. Sure there's a cubby house at the back that can help keep the kids attention but it's quite run down - no love or care put into its maintenance. Service was ok, but they did clear our food away without asking us, I was going to pack away the remaining nugget and chips but I was too busy with my toddler to stop them. The toilets are pitch black once you went in and closed the door. You walk past the kitchen area before you reach the toilets and it was quite dirty. Heard another kid saying 'I'm not going in there' when they initially thought that was leading to the public toilet. You also get much better quality food for that price closeby. From reading the reviews now, I assume the high ratings are for the previous owners instead.
Love the Duchess. I’ve been attending fortnightly meetings held at the Duchess for more than 7 years now and they never disappoint. Food and drinks are consistently great and the staff are lovely and always remember our orders. Thanks for offering us this space for so long Duchess team and keep up the good work: D
My favourite brunch spot. The homemade baked beans and everything else in the Veggo Huevos is very tasty! Great coffee and very friendly service too. Love the egg and bacon bun and coffee - great brekkie on the way to work.
Not overly impressed, we ordered the glory salad today. Unfortunately me and my wife were disappointed with the wilted lettuce. The salad was supposed to have feta and it didn’t come out with any of it until we asked for it.
They put the feta in the little bowl and gave it to us to add ourselves. They should’ve taken our plates away and made the salad as the menu read.it was a disappointing salad, not worth the money that was the price on the menu I’ve had better elsewhere. The lamb was like pulled lamb and only a small amount of it. I think all the good reviews were for breakfast items and not lunch items so I suggest you order something with eggs.
Very disappointed.
Recently moved into the area and tried Duchess of Spotswood breakfast which i found very unique n different from other cafes in the area, Great professional Chefs and good service too, Also dog friendly courtyard with kids cubby house
Couple of hairs in a pancake. No apology for it, which was odd. The outdoors and kids stuff needs to be cleaned up.
Went there for the breakfast this morning. Their pumpkin croquettes are very flavoursome and unique dish with a generous serving. Also tried the berry smoothie.spot on! Very friendly staff. Will definitely go there again
I cannot believe how rude the male staff were here. I had tried politely to get the attention regarding the undercooked food but needed to leave.
The man who went to take my payment actually got stuck into me, raising his voice saying it was my fault I should have waved my hand in the air and he was slamming things around and slammed the eftpos machine in front of me he was so angry.
I left in tears. Can you imagine how much fear his wife must feel daily. I've never experienced that level of male aggression since surviving domestic violence and this man was also trying to tell me that it was my fault aka gaslight me. I'm still shaking from this horrific experience. No one should be yelled at when they are the customer. Oh wait. No one should be yelled at like that EVER.
I only stopped for an Iced latte on a very hot day in Melbourne during my ride and stayed out the front. Would like to return to try the food and properly check the place out.
The staff was attentive and friendly.
Greatly appreciated the bottle of cold water.
Went back to this cafe after being out of town for a couple years. It is certainly not the same. The food was average at best and I would say the same about the coffee. They had stale pastries sitting in an unhygienic case in the front. The cafe has more of a feel of a local milk shop than an eatery. The service was ok. The cubby house in the back is not safe for any children - it is in disrepair and looks as though has not been cleaned in years. If a child has asthma it will be a hazard. The entire cafe appears to be in need of a major refresh. Unfortunately this cafe is far below the standard of the cafes in the area and you can easily find a better alternative within walking distance. I hope the management take time to reflect and improve their outdated offerings.
I come here occasionally with family, the courtyard is lovely ona nice day. Service is always good, food comes quickly and is always great, no complaints.
Coffee was okay, but the croissant was quite terrible.
Small, not toasted nicely and it was missing the tomato (cheese and tomato croissant).
It was a take away order so I didn’t get bother to walk 10 min back to get it fixed.
Partner and I have eaten here twice in the last week and it has been outstanding. Service, Food and coffee have all been of a high quality. They have a very interesting food menu with options that go beyond your standard breakfast foods, even for the foody inner west standards. Lots of vegetarian options as well if you're so inclined.
There was always enough space to sit and when it's nice weather you can sit either out front on the nice main street of Spotswood, or in the leafy back garden with its own cubby house for the kids.
We will make the trip here more often.
Nice little cafe with a courtyard chubby for younger kids. They have an Interesting menu. I ordered the Earl of Cornwall. Lovely corn and jalapeño fritters with a slaw. Portion is enough for 2. I was served a pleasant server, hard to come by these days
Great food and friendly service. Pricing a bit higher so consider that if it's a factor for you.
Took my parents here for a light lunch. The atmosphere was very nice and the staff were all super friendly and welcoming! I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for that cosy Cafe feel. The food was also amazing, I had the green goddess which smelled great and tasted even better.
