Dredge and Dragline Historical Site reviews
12 The ‘Porcupine Flat Gold dredge and dragline’ has always been a good stop just out of Malden to see the Mining History in the area. As the Historians in Malden will tell you, ‘Mr Heywood worked from the late 1950’s until the early 1980’s, and the ‘bucket dredges’ were used up until the late 1970’s’.
Lovely to see the old machines, but best not to drink the water!
Interesting place to stop.
Particularly interesting given that this history is so recent.
More history you have to explore and it’s right beside the road so easy walk. But you have to check it out.
Interesting large drag line type shovel machine which looks to be at least 60-70 years old.
Full access to look around and inside if you dare to climb up to the inside of the machine.
They did it tough in the early industrial revolution and their skills to make such a machine are remarkable.
Probably my all time favourite photo stop, nearly every car I've owned in the last decade has been snapped there and also very interesting place to stop and look around.
Awesome place almost drove right by it
If your in the area it’s definitely worth checking it out
You car really see how it was weathered by time and the elements
Seeing these massive metal machines up close it awesome
This site was owned and operated by my grandfather George Heywood who built and designed all equipment their with a process he designed to extract gold from the old goldfield sites. Their was a informative board there at some stage more information can be found in Maldon information centre.
This joint is cooool. There are 2 huge old machines from mining times that are super fascinating to climb on and look at. There's a fire pit and a couple table and chairs. The only downside to it is that it is right next to the road but otherwise its awesome. Totally worth coming to and I hope to be back soon!
Old gold mining machinery, large drag line crane plus floating bucket dredge in small lake. Different & worth a look. Just past Maldon railway station on left going North.
I love this old stuff. You can climb on it but take a stick to move cobwebs aside. Watch where you stand as there's an ant nest (which is easy to spot).
Pity whichever service owns this and on whose land it is (Parks Victoria - the Great Destroyer probably - thousands of public servants and none doing maintenance) couldn't at least do some paint or rust work on this magnificent beast of a historic piece of machinery from Victoria's gold period.
What an amazing sidebar to a great day in Maldon. To see the old rusted machinery and imagine it operating back in the day, incessantly dragging at the earth and loading it for processing. Paper cuts and screen glare at work today? Glad we have more work options these days. Highly recommend a stop here and a walk around.
Gum Tree Hollow.
What a cool little roadside stand, just up the road from the Dredge. Had a stunning alternative Christmas display, metal figures and an interesting take on an angel. When was the last time you saw an angel in a bowler hat? It looked casual but there must have been a lot of effort gone into it to make it look so coordinated. Thanks to whoever put it together. Photos don't do it justice, well worth stopping and getting out of the car.
