Downtown Dumpling Market reviews
23 The food quality was so underwhelming. I ordered prawn dumplings from the Homemade Dumplings one because it was the only shop that got so hyped. The staff just took the dumplings out from the container and put on a plate with some soy sauce and served as it is. It was cold, doughy and I’m pretty sure it was chicken not the prawn inside. $16 for 8pcs.
The pork belly skewers from Hoy Pinoy was not even warmed either. Chewy and tough as if they have been heated up many many times already. $16 for 2skewers. The pineapple drinks also tasteless.
Overall still enjoyed the experience as the event was well organized. But probably won’t come back as everything just overpriced and not worth it imo.
The vibes were vibin’! I came here with my friends two evenings ago and we had a great time. The atmosphere was vibrant and the food was pretty good. Lots of tables and chairs and grass space to sit down and eat.
Beware: you WILL be spoilt for choice. So many different food stalls to choose from! We had a difficult time choosing what to eat.
I recommend trying the dumplings from the stall “Homemade Dumplings” and the baos from “Bao Plus”. Both the dumplings and baos had really juicy and tasty fillings. I particularly loved the teriyaki chicken bao from Bao Plus. The dumplings from “Shandong Mama” were also really delicious, but the wait time to receive our food was a little long. If you want something refreshing, I highly recommend trying the watermelon sugarcane juice.
Giving a 4-star rating and not 5 because everything here was pretty expensive. Otherwise, everything else was wonderful)
The location was incredibly stunning. Perhaps we should have gone on a weekday to fully enjoy the food, as it was extremely crowded on Saturday evening. The lines were incredibly long, and I believe that by the time our turn came, the food would have run out, or we would be hungry again after eating and waiting in another line. At night, the atmosphere became even more vibrant with the multitude of people. And the best part? Fed Square is right next to it. When we went to the Dumpling market, there happened to be an African festival taking place as well, so we were able to experience both. It’s definitely a place you should visit if you haven’t already.
Had the birria wonton wrappers, Japanese noodles with chicken and pork mince + pandan milk & grapefruit bbt. Good day out in the city enjoying the scenes.
Worst of the worst. Enormous waste of time and money. Foods are way expensive, tasteless, and colder than a cat's nose. False advertising on all social media platforms. It was a nightmare checking this event. NOT recommending at all
Lots of different food trucks and seats available. No long queues to wait in line. Dumplings and other items available.
Saw it on social media and it looked quite nice. Went during the weekend and it was very average. The whole festival looked boring and the stalls there were all overpriced and overrated. We ended up trying the homemade dumplings and it was okish, nothing special. I bet we can get better dumplings in cbd.
Overall, false ads.
I thought a "market" would be a lot cheaper than a restaurant. Not here though!
Overpriced overrated overhyped commercialised garbage!
The Downtown Dumpling Market… very similar to the night noodle market but, less vendors. I thought the drink selection was quite limited if you’re not a gin drinker. Tried the wonton nachos, they were definitely a highlight as were the vegetarian noodles and gyoza As usual everything is a little overpriced, but one would assume you don’t go to these “events” to eat up on the cheap. The vibe was “ok” - I think it would depend on what time you go. Overall not sure I would drop past again before it finishes, but it’s worth at least a visit seeing entry is free.
The food was not as good as expected. No variations of dumplings at all. Doesnt do justice to the name
A delightful night out! Lots of delicious dumplings, bars, and plenty of seating. Highly recommend.
Wonderful idea and set up with great food. I would go straightaway to the upstairs grassy areas. Downstairs the very loud harsh rock music was so bad that it made it difficult to stay inside the area for long and was the anti-inspiration for this review
Was not very impressed sadly! We tried 5-6 different vendors and spent quite a lot of money only to be disappointed in such bland flavours. No one really enjoyed their meal and we left to go get dinner somewhere else. Was a bit of a sad journey I must admit!
Loved downtown dumpling market.
Delicious food and great music!
Loads of choices, places to sit with adorable cakes.
We had delicious beef dumplings from the tea house and sausage pierogi’s from the pierogi place! So tasty.
Mate was veggie and had heaps of choices!
What an awesome set up, a great variety of Asian delights, with some Middle East infusion also. Enjoyed some Yaki, soba noodles and fresh steamed dumplings with a side of Boba bubble tea. Plenty of seating and great funky music vibe. Only a couple more days to go. I wish the weather was warmer when we went but was still fantastic. Definitely need to do this every year.
Brought my young family here and it was amazing. Entertainment for the kids with music and roving performers, clean toilets, changing facilities, pathways for prams, shaded seating areas, and best of all amazing food and drink. We loved Oriental Tea House and Hoy Pinoy! Will be back next weekend.
@downtowndumplingmarket Head over to birramung marr this month to check out the latest Yarra side food market. Entry is free and there’s a line if you go in later so best to go in early to avoid the crazy queues, grab a seat and beat the long lines for food! It’s a great inner city night vibe with Kpop tunes, live music and food/drinks?
Lots of food to choose from - beyond dumplings- and it’s 100% cashless. Really enjoyed the lychee sugar cane Juice $12 @cane_sugarcane_juice, cute Dumpling dessert $17 @dessertopia_by_196below, bao set $25 from @wonderbao_, @hoypinoybbq skewers $15.50 and the dumplings from homemade dumpling $15/$16. More on the pricey side but it’s a nice vibe if you’re after the atmosphere!?
Falsely advertised and extremely poor organisation and management. Staff not on the same page.
For an 'all ages event', IDs were required and children had to be accompanied by adults. Regardless of having adults in the group we were refused entry by one staff member, then let in by a different staff member.
Upon entering we again had our IDs checked by two OTHER staff members, one of which did not comment upon checking the IDs of our 'underage' members whilst the other asked us to leave. We had not looked at any stalls let alone purchased anything. All of this happened while there was a young child and adult at a nearby table.
Extremely disappointing.
Absolutely awful. We were sold raw chicken skewers by Hoy Pinoy. We then tried the 'homemade dumplings' across the lawn - 'prawn, pork and chives'. They cook the dumplings offsite, then keep the pre-cooked dumplings in big polystyrene boxes. They then just put them on plates when you order. They are stone cold, no doubt having been cooked hours beforehand. I wonder if there is a central number you can call to report possible sickness outbreaks from this event? It's also really, really expensive. Just yuk.
Another cool festival that occurs in Melbourne. Variety of international food such as Turkish, Polish, and chinese.
