Lovely dessert spot located in Chinatown, great interior and comfortable lighting and lots of options in reasonably good portions for the price. My mango pomelo sago in coconut milk was beautifully balanced by the green tea ice cream - so delicious! And service was quick.

Update: I’ve revisited several times since September 2022 and tried more options, mostly from their snow ice series (my favourite is the strawberry snow ice) which I find to have much more flavour than the crushed ice options, though both are delicious.

Will definitely be back again

I just bought a TW Tofu pudding with red bean for takeaway today. After 30 mins I ate it the red bean tasted sour and spoiled Then I have to throw it away instead of spending 30 mins to return it.

Although the taro balls are not as plump and big as in the picture, the ingredients used in the whole jelly pearl taro balls are not bad. You can try the jelly jelly in Taiwan if you miss it while studying abroad.

Best mango bingsu I’ve ever had. Service was outstanding. Comforting Atmosphere, feels like home. Not to mention that they close later than other dessert stores. Highly recommend.

Yummy mango snow ice with ice cream. The guy that served me was so friendly and talked me through the delicious menu. Easy to share with 2 people. This cost me around $19 but is quite a serving!

Had their 141 black sesame glutinous rice balls in sweet ginger soup, 22 pearls/taro balls/sweet potato balls/honey beans on herbal jelly base, 44 mixed pudding with fruits, and a watermelon smoothie with jelly and lychee. Sesame rice balls were sweet spicy and hearty though the portion was small. Herbal jelly and mixed pudding were very refreshing and on the less sweet side. Watermelon smoothie was more like a juice; fresh watermelon blended, and paired well with lychee.

Okay so this looks to be a marmite little joint, you either love it or loathe it. We might have been lucky tonight as all stars aligned, hence a 5* review. This place is fab for a late-ish night grub (say around 11pm, when most other venues are already shut).
We've started with desserts, which were prima sort - really great HK style. Had #27,41 and 83, all brill. Then the savory bites: ok maybe not the best in class, but certainly did the trick that night and hey, it's a Dessert story and not noodles or ramen or whatever. That said, hugely enjoyed the and dumplings, also no complaints about the chicken schnitzel (yes, served in a paper bag, but so what, the batter was actually very tasty).
Good vibes about this place, still full of people, and staff were all smiles and quick to attend and serve food. It may depend on whose shift it is, but was really surprised to see that some folks complained about rudeness of staff. The team tonight were great

All in all, really recommend for desserts or if you find yourself with an empty stomach after 10pm. Will be going back to go through some more items on the dessert menu.

Good portion size for sharing. Staff were really friendly and the waiting time isn’t very long at night.

ORDERED:
  61. Milk Snow Ice with Mango Jelly and Mango Juice with Popping Pearl
  64. Milk Snow Ice with Red Bean, Pearl and Mango Pudding

These were $32.76 together!

REVIEW:
Dessert story is an iconic institution in Melbourne. It's been around forever and its efficiency has never stopped. Bare bones, Dessert story will give you dessert and space with friends but nothing more.

The menu hasn't really changed over the years. The Milk Snow with Ice with mango jelly is still the best!
It is lacking the additional flavour and wow factor that you get from its competitors in the Korean shaved ice space. But as a result of the lack of pizzazz, the desserts themselves are very affordable for the quantity.

Definitely more of a cheap spot for kick ons after dinner. The tables are cramped, and the plastic spoons and cutlery don't provide much focus on quality. There's no real table service, so you'll need to order at the counter and then they'll bring you the food to your little table number stand.
The food comes out unbelievably fast too. Efficiency number 1.

I will come back every time just for the most perfect silken tofu pudding and a delicate ginger sugar syrup, imo they are just as good if not better than the yumcha ones, hits the spot every single time.
Whereas the other dessert like the shaved ice I just wouldn’t order. It’s overdone, the ice is thick, there is simply too much trying to happen on one dish.

Such a cute place with an amazing atmosphere and wide selection of things to order. Greatly enjoyed my visit and would recommend if you wanted to try some yummy desserts.

It's 35 degrees in Melbourne at the moment and we just wanted to just have something cold and we ended up in this joint. It was very busy and people and queueing to get in. Luckily it only took us 5 minutes and we managed to sit in. The order is about 15 minutes wait and my partner smashed his strawberry dessert and he was impressed by it. Mine is simple but so refreshing. Highly recommended and has a lot of seatings inside. Locate din China Town.

The customer service at this place is the worst I’ve ever experience and I’m never gonna come back to this place ever again. The male staff manning the tills this evening around 9+ p.m. Of 26th of December (wearing white T-shirt with a specs) was extremely rude to the customer. We’ve been queuing for quite some times today just to be told off by him saying that we’ve yet chosen any seat and he could not take our orders. What’s even worst was that after getting ourselves a seat and we tried to order again he totally ignored us when we were trying to order food and proceed to take order from other customers instead when we’re clearly the person who’s been here first. What a disappointment knowing that the customer services of a dessert shop can be so bad and I strongly do not recommend this place to anyone at all.

UPDATE: Dirty place, looks like it hasn't been cleaned in weeks. The shaved ice is death by sugar, insanely sweet, disgusting. (older review) Ate sweet potato and black sticky rice bowl. Feel like I've been poisoned it was that bad. Also the HK coffee was terrible. Is that the type of coffee they have in HK? If so I'm avoiding traveling there.

Can't believe that I have been missing this place for dessert as they offer wide range selection of grass jelly, pudding, and even shaved-ice dessert. Would recommend the grass jelly selection, and my go-to would have been the mango sago one!

Situated in China town. Good light desserts. Not overly sweet. You can order a few dishes and get sharing plates to share, which was nice. Reasonably priced, except for the crushed ice ones. Was quite crowded but the food turned up within a reasonable time. Given the chance, Will go again to try few other options.

Ordered sago with matcha ice cream and pomelo - only about five strands of pomelo in my dish

Spacious place for dessert in chinatown. Getting popular as they normally open late, so pretty convenient.

The service was mixed depending on the staffs. We were welcomed by a very rude girl who pointed us to a table and she literally threw the menu on the table. We all, and even the customers from the next table were super surprised by her behaviour. However, the girl who took our order and did the payment was super nice and friendly.

Food was just so so, nothing is special.

If we have other options available, will probably not come back here.
