Charlie's Pizza Restaurant reviews
55Incredible place authentic Italian style pizza restaurant with a great host and his daughter
CHARLIE IS A EFFING LEGEND AND THE PIZZA WAS AUTHENTIC AND HOW ITS MEANT TO BE HEADING BACK FOR DINNER TOMORROW
When I was younger, this traditional pizza restaurant was occasionally the location for our family outings. I was young when I started going there 2 decades ago, and I'm pretty certain that it has been there even before I was born. Meaning it has ~30 years of history and milestones.
I've always known it as just "Charlie's" and in my memories, it was a place that was always full of people. The last time I visited, it was almost empty. It seemed kind of sad, as though the place had lost its lustre, competing a race against newer and trendier establishments.
Once a hotspot for their popular mushroom sauce steak and cook-it-yourself volcanic rock slabs.
At the back, outside is an alfresco with plenty of table seatings and green fauna. A nice casual place to relax and catch up with your friends over coffee.
Really liked this place. Definitely NOT a domino's. Really good pizza and bet thier pastas good too.
Food is amazing still, Charlie is an icon and still makes one of the best pizzas ever, the steak were amazing as well
This place is a gem in Footscray.
I was at this restaurant about 20 years ago and recently on Sunday I took my little one here was a walk down memory lane. It was a magic moment shared with my little one and it gave me some nostalgic moments.
There was plenty of carparks out the front as we arrived here around the time they opened. We were greeted by the charming Charlie himself up to our table. We felt warm and welcome. The iconic interior has not changed. Clean and presentable. Charlie was so nice, friendly and so we chatted away a bit.
We ordered the famous mushroom sauce steak, carbonara and a Coke. Our entree was the free bread with green pickled chilli and garlic butter. Omgosh these were sooOoO delicious, so fresh like homemade!
That was just the beginning. The steak was mindblowing. So soft that could melt in your mouth along with the perfectly cooked mushroom and tasty creamy sauce. My little one loved it so much. Not to mention the carbonara pasta was on another level. The pasta itself tasted like homemade and not like those ready made store bought pasta. It was so fresh and tastes so good.
To top it all off Charlie gave us a complimentary gelato Ice-cream (I insist to pay though haha).
Price is on point and very worthy. We will definitely be back again and recommend to friends and family.
Thank you Charlie for your amazing food and dedication
This place made me laugh. The food was average and confusing, the restaurant was empty, con air blasting on the the TV. It's an experience to say the least.
Pizza base doughy and not cooked. Horrible pizza. Did not even look palatable. Pizza cold when arrived Shame as used to be good
Open late time (until 3am). Delicious Charlie salad. I never disappointed to maindish “mushroom steak”. Must try.
For those of you complaining about decor atmosphere and waiting staff remember this restaurant is older than most of you guys. It's a very traditional pizza shop from way back when only Italians ran pizza shops. And believe me still one of the best traditional type pizzas around keep going old man. You do good.
Went there for my sons birthday as it's his namesake.
Interior is like stepping back to the late 70s or 80s.
Service was average at best.
Chicken pizza was below average at best.
Garlic bread was ok.
The owner himself handles the transaction no trust of the staff or one staff person to do that.
Perhaps an off night, extra star for name Charlie.
Literally the best experience ever, great company, amazing food and super cheap. I highly recommend. Perfect experience in every way
The workers in this place doesn’t follow food hygiene protocols. Need the council to finish to check health & safety standards
Tonight they took my order then canceled it 35 mins later.an abomination of customer service… disgraceful
My boyfriend recommended us to go there because he went there often when he was younger, and i was really disappointed in the dining experience.there is no music or atmosphere at all in the outdated dining area, making it very awkward because the other table could listen to our conversation and we could hear theirs.the lady that served us didnt write down our order properly and she was very awkward and didn’t understand when we would ask about the menu.since she didnt write it properly, we only had one steak that came out and 20 minutes later when the chef came out and I asked about the 2nd steak, she said the waitress only told her one.there was a very limited beverage selection.the food was good, but i think we were overcharged because there wasnt a proper system they had for food orders, because Charlie was asking us what we were served, and that point we didnt know if we only had 1 serving of each item we ordered (pizza bread, special garlic bread and steak) or just 1 serving. He also pur the menu directly ontop of our eating plates, which is very unsanitary.
I ordered a meatlovers pizza for delivery, it was fantastic! Perfectly cooked, delicious tender shredded chicken (none of that processed stuff). The base is thick and soft. All of it was amazing! If you like a pizza place that isn’t stingy on toppings then this is it:)
Charlie’s is a true Footscray gem - old skool and keeping it real after all these years. The pizza base is second to none and steak to die for.
The decor in this restaurant is extremely outdated, the chairs and table are of very cheap quality and the pizzas were actually pretty expensive for the size and quality that came out. Just isn't worth it when there is better places nearby. The pizzas were extremely oily and made me feel sick after two pieces. The service was strange because the girl mumbled alot and then laughed at herself. She didn't take our order with a paper and pen but then kept expressing she was having issues remembering our order. It seemed that she was also maybe a but scared of the owner who was an elderly man that hung around staring at us while we ate.
If I could give a NO Star ratings.
Omg seriously the worst experience ever. Waited over 30min to be served. The old man gave us a menu his hand covered in flour. Order came 1hr later even though it's a quiet evening. They forgot our drinks (2 of us only) and forgot our pizza. When asked he say it's cooking. When we went and check on him he just started the base of our pizza. Told him to forget it. Paid and left very disappointed ️ I have been going to Charlie's for a long time and always recommend to others. Now I'm embarrassed.
Generally dirty, waiter told us we can use the rear outdoor area but then Charlie said it's closed, inside was like a sauna so sat out front, food was overwhelmingly average. One of the wine glasses came out with what looked like smears of Vaseline on it, and was very cloudy. I would not write home to mum about anything at this place. I don't really reccomend it, try 'Fox in the Corn' at the other end of droop st instead. Same pricing better food, better service, better beverage selection.
