Bistro Gitan reviews
66I’ve always walked past this place and thought I’d have to try it. Unfortunately it was underwhelming. Steak tartare was extremely flavourless and bland, the tempura fish of the day (snapper) very small portion, veal t-bone (pictured, as served) was 90% bone with a couple of veggies on the side. I’ll be sticking to France-Soir next time. One positive - the crème brûlée was a decent size and nice.
Good service but terrible food.
Visited on 28/01/2024. Ordered the veal T-bone ($47) from the specials menu. It was served on a damp, stained chopping board, covered in knife marks. The board was frankly disgusting. The steak was overdone (waiter didn’t ask my preference but it came medium-well). It was dry, with large segments of unrendered fat. Steak and sides were both unseasoned.
Entrees and dessert were fine, not amazing. Seems like this place is well established and relatively popular so hopefully this dish was just a temporary brain fart. But I don’t think a quality kitchen would serve this dish.
I very much enjoyed my dining experience and ambience. However my dish, La Pôchouse (oven baked rockling) although delicious left me hungry. My friend's meal was a more generous serve.
Fine dining
Amazing food and best Australian wine collection!
Some of the helpings can be a bit generous, but then you are coming here for experience and tingling your taste buds.
I lunched here on 17th August with my son. He had the porterhouse and I had a two course lunch special. His steak was perfectly cooked and very good. My meal began with mushroom soup, absolutely delicious with generous shaving of black truffle on top. It was followed by Rock Ling served with cabbage, bacon and a sauce which matched it perfectly. The waiting staff managed the one course versus two perfectly and were always attentive.
I had been to a previous location at Hotel Max and from what I recall, this restaurant has improved from just very good to fabulous. Love the tastes which come out of that kitchen.
Delightful, busy bistro with delicious food. Was very busy for a Thursday night but food came quickly. Highly recommend.
Lovely atmosphere, the food was okay. Tuna was over cooked at $50 per serve! Potato gratin was pretty raw inside. Sadly the steak tartare had no egg included - argggh so very disappointing.
We had a lovely Valentine’s dinner at this gorgeous restaurant, though not everything was perfect (as would be expected for a place of this scale and price tag). The staff was very efficient, and the food was well-presented and enjoyable, though not outstanding. Minus one star mainly because we had to wait quite long for our mains - nearly 45 minutes after our entree. The bustling atmosphere and good wine definitely made the wait more pleasant, but still we would have liked more proactive communication from staff.
Food was really well thought and delicious, very nice place. Love it when they turn on the fireplace.
What an absolute delight this was. A gem of a find. Quiet and out of the way restaurant. Small dining availability yet spacious. The atmosphere was perfect for conversation without competing against other patrons.
The service was delightful. Staff offering to take our jackets on entry. Focused attention from the moment you walk in. Dim lighting created the mood. The host continued to ensure glasses were filled and the experience as it should be.
When ordering our meals the host acknowledged the amount, providing recommendations for sides. He was spit on. Pairing the bottle of wine with the meal selection. Dining is so much easier when staff collaborate with patrons and provide respectful input.
The food was elegant in flavours. Nothing over powering. Simple elements paired perfectly.
Outstanding French bistro, professional wait staff and excellently curated cuisine. A warm and inviting dining space, and extensive wine list. We will be back
Never disappoints at Bistro Gitan. The service is brilliant and the atmosphere is always vibrant. Food is classic French modern and hits the spot.
Food was very nice and so was the ambiance. Definitely will be making this place our regular dinner meeting restaurant.
Amazing birthday dinner out w my husband! He had surprised me with Bistro Gitan visit. No regrets and food was amazing. Lovely atmosphere and great staff. Wish I had more space in my tummy to keep eating.
Came here for my birthday celebration, everything is good, the food and the service. The dinning environment is fantastic. Love here.
The beef tartare is amazing, delicious
But the stake which caused me to get up many times at night to drink water, I felt so thirsty after this meal.
Also the sugar on top of the cream brûlée is a bit over burnt for me, way too bitter.
But I will go back again with friends.
I loved stepping into this gorgeous restaurant/bistro. It's very French inspired in a beautiful part of town with good parking and easy to get to. The decor is lovely and you're greeted the second you step inside and all staff were friendly.
I personally found the menu a little limiting; to those that don't eat seafood or pork, but still managed to find something. There was only one option for me for entree and of course they were out of it, which I found at a 6pm on a Saturday night to be very poor. I therefore had to skip entree and for the main, I chose the pasta (French?) and Gratin Dauphinois (which were scrumptious). Dessert was a beautiful sponge with cream and strawberries. It was light and delicious and you didn't feel too bad that you'd eaten so much as it wasn't heavy and sickly. The presentation was also outstanding. My friend loved their meal too, and I would most likely go back again, both when their menu is completely available, and also when it's an occasion as it wasn't cheap.
Overall, service was good and food, though not plentiful or with a lot of variation, was tasty. I'd recommend it.
Always wanted to dine in and finally got the chance and was worth the wait and hype - amazing venue polite staff and the food was outstanding
Great place for a casual lunch. Interior had a great vibe attached and the atmosphere had a special ambiance feel attached. Will be back for sure.
Satisfying French Nosh. Came for an unhurried lunch and were rewarded with charming service and great food. When your waiter is the boss you know your in for an experience. Great location and ambiance.
I’d heard so many good things about this restaurant, and when you walk in you can’t help but be impressed. Although the food is pretty good, my steak was average. And the service was average at best…for the price point you’d expect a lot better…
