Barry reviews
30Just had the most delicious omelette with mushrooms, fetta, capsicum, and mint. Holy moley, it was good
Unfortunately, I don't recommend eating here. I have been a frequent customer at this Cafe for over 10 years. However, the quality of food and customer service has taken a massive dive and I will no longer be going back.
Brunch was really good. Tasty, great preparation and friendly helpful staff. Definite place to go.
Found a hair in my coffee. Disgusting! Poor customer service. Replacement coffee charge! Won’t recommend and wound never return. Please don’t waste a second of your life at this place
Korean Fried Chicken roll lunch special! Crunchy chicken and kimchi wasn’t too hot. Roll was simple but this complemented the dish. Great coffee, awesome iced chocolate, and delicious chips.
Definitely coming back!
Staff are friendly and helpful. Food is pretty good. Prices have risen (due to cost of ingredients going up I'm guessing), but it's not outrageously expensive. Servings have shrunk a bit of late, but still serving nice breakfasts and lunch. Coffee is great. Cakes are displayed in a glass cabinet, and there's always some decadent little treat beckoning to be eaten! Gluten free goodies too. Outside tables in Barry Street (hence the name). High Street front has some seating too.
Firstly, peanut butter & tomato on toast is recommended. That said, this place has gone downhill in a big way… after waiting >50 mins for our 3 meals, the kale & broccolini salad I was looking forward to, and that has been a staple of Barry’s menu for years, came missing basil, coriander, activated almonds and chilli, and had some gross milky substance in the bottom of the dish. Frankly, it was gross. I understand staffing is an issue everywhere at the moment, but the wait staff paid little attention to us at all, despite the excessive wait time. We asked for a menu after placing our initial order as we wanted juice. Got the menu, then waited 20 mins to order, and ended up having to flag down the wait staff ourselves. When it came time to pay I informed the waitress that I wouldn’t be paying for the salad, and explained why. No apology, just an apathetic “I’ll take that off the bill”. Admittedly we got our coffee taken off the bill too, but a simple “I’m so sorry for that” would’ve made a lot of difference to my experience. I love supporting small business and hate giving negative feedback, but I genuinely doubt I’ll return to Barry after this experience.
Very good service. Food for vegans are nice. They are accomodating for some of the substitutions in the meals. Coffee is great.
Nice venue.
The service was friendly in the beginning, however after get my coffee and food it was quite hard to get someone attention.
I had the smash avo, love the idea of eating with hands, and the mix of avo + pomegranate can’t go wrong. However no much seasoning in the dish. I had to use lots of salt and pepper to get more interesting flavours. 5 stars for the pumpkin- I assume - bread. Really delish!
Coffee is alright.
Not sure if I’d return…
Extremely disappointed. Booked a table that wasn't ready for us. The food took over an hour to be served. Waitresses blamed the kitchen staff although there were people who ordered after us served their meals a long time before us. I believe the kitchen had lost our order. The food was very average and although the waitress apologised when I went to pay, there wasn't even a complimentary coffee offered.
We won't ever go there again. We will also share our experience on a broad range of social media and tell everyone we know.
Sort yourself out Barry. That was awful.
The most unfriendly cafe staff ever met. Was greeted with what do you want?
Food was delayed of 30 min in the empty cafe and after been told not to be able to make out meal because some ingredients were missing.
Pretty bad.
Kindly staff, delicious food, comfy corner (table 5), all in all a lovely experience. Thank you!
Quality and tasty food, coffee, wine and good service. Been here a few times and always been satisfied with the food and service.
Absolutely disgusting service from the old lady (who I assume is the boss lady) when we dined in this morning. We ordered a few homemade muffin-cakes after having our coffee and brunch. She told me she heated the cakes, obviously to cover up the fact that they were days old, dry and crumbly. After digging into the cakes, we were horrified when my husband noticed the cakes were covered with furry mould. We told the young waitress who was very apologetic and sweet. The old boss lady however was so rude, extremely defensive and kept trying to justify the mould, instead of just apologising to the customer. She proceeded to explain that the cakes were only 3-4 days old and mould is only on the top icing which is outrageous and defensive. Mould is mould. Simple. She acted like she was doing us a favour by taking the mouldy cakes off our bill. Wow thanks but no thanks. Needless to say we won’t be going back again. The rest of the staff were nice.
Nice cafe. I don't usually see it so quiet, got a table after walking in straight away. Food was nice. Service was nice and friendly.
The whole place smelt like urine, we wanted to eat but couldn’t bare the smell so just ordered coffee. Our coffee was terrible. We took two sips and left.
I finally made the effort to come and visit this place, though it had more to do with actually getting up early enough to, well, just basically visit any place. Yeah, it turned out that this place was pretty cool, and the service was fantastic. In fact, even though the crowds were present, I was served relatively quickly, and my breakfast didn't take all that long to manifest either. The other thing was that the tea was actually pretty nice as well, so, yeah, this place is definitely recommended.
I'm not into negative reviews, but this was bad. Ordered vegi burger and chips. Burger patties were disgusting supermarket bought, processed, oily disks. Worst meal I've had out in Melbourne for very long time. Oily chips too. Partners meal was very average. Coffee was fine. Was there a change of ownership? Seems like it's trying to cut costs but remain superficially similar to how Barry was in the past.
Amazing Breakfast, owners have turned over a new leaf after their recent issues. The food was fantastic, and the coffee was phenomenal. Plenty of Vegan options, and very friendly and helpful staff. Would highly recommend!
I used to come here for years and it was always high quality, came back this week for the first time in ages and although the coffee was perfect, the food was terrible. Cafe looks run down and then was devastated to read about the wage theft of the owner when telling a friend I was there. The rich get richer, and the hard working, working class get their pay stolen - disgusting! I will never, ever support this cafe again and hope no one else does too unless ownership has changed and food improves.
