Best mince pie ever! The pastry was incredible.
Babka is always good -no matter what you have.

Lovely little bakery/cafe in the heart of Brunswick Street. It's difficult to choose what to have because they offer so many great options. Given bread is their primary focus, today I opted for a Schnitzel sandwich, which was both filling and delicious. My partner chose their pork, veal & rosemary sausage roll, which was excellent as well.

Wonderful! The breakfast was awesome, highlight on the amazing croissants (and you have the word of a French person), very nice staff and a cozy place with a chill, a bit vintage vibe.i will come back!

You could line up around the corner and pay $15 for a croissant or… come here. Cheaper. Just as good. Although not as fancy but still get a great croissant. And the French toast is like a proper French toast without all the fancy flowers sprinkle all over it.
All in great value.

Very delicious lunch and pastries! Get a jar of the homemade jam or marmalade to take home.

Best pastry and cute/cosy shop set up. Danish is always spot on. Get in early because they sell out.
Would get take away because service staffs are not the greatest.

Under new management, the food is still the same because back of house staff are the same (thank goodness). However, I miss some of the original front of house staff (actually they need more front of house staff as they always seem one or two down and it gets really busy!). They need to get back to better music selection (music sounded like it was from a 1940’s film and barely audible when I last there) and fresh flowers please. Babka needs to maintain its original charm and high food standards.

The staff here are unbearable and dismissive! Came here for takeaway and won’t be coming back due to their poor service and attitude …. Now onto the Pastries, the cherry tart was refreshing and not something I seen other bakeries do and hence why the 2 stars however the Cheese cake unfortunately was lacking in every department. The place is packed so I doubt my review will do anything but personally I won’t be back.

Paid $15 for two long blacks? I understand everything is getting more expensive but I don't see how 2 black coffees constitutes 65% of an hour of minimum wage

Friendly staffs. Sandwiches and coffee are really good. Ingredients are fresh for sandwich, so could finish them all. Always busy on weekends.

Awful experience. On a cold day we go in with an empty takeaway coffee in hand, ordered takeaway sandwiches but then asked if we could eat them in as the place was half empty. This was accommodated after some deliberation but shortly after we heard the old lady (assumed owner) telling off her staff for allowing this saying ‘take away is take away, they take it away’. This was very off putting and made us very uncomfortable but we continued to eat. Shortly after, the old women approached our table and ridiculed us for bringing in another coffee into her establishment. She insinuated we were rude for not drinking her coffee and did not allow us to explain we were not planning on staying and the coffee was empty. A ridiculous stance considering the alternative was we don’t come in and we spend no money. We no longer felt comfortable so asked for takeaway containers which was met with rudeness and and eye roll from a grown woman. We regularly eat there and have spent ample but will not return after this lady’s treatment of us and her staff.

I love their pain au chocolat,
Though I would like to see two bars of chocolate in them rather than one.

Their pricing is really great $4.50 for a pain au chocolat and $4 for a croissant, most places are $7 plus and are awful. I honestly prefer babka croissant over lune.

Sandwiches are great and fresh! Better range then Nicos! And cheaper too.
I ordered a pie last week and it was given to me quite cold, usually great though.

Staff are lovely and i love that babka has not tried to be some trendy place like everywhere else.

An absolute gem in Fitzroy. The sandwiches are consistently good, the tuna one is my favourite. Also famous for its lemon tart, it is as good as everyone says!

Managed to help me get a last minute Babka for my dinner party. The babka was really good and freshly baked.

Arguably the best bacon and egg roll in Melbourne. Their cakes and pies aren't too bad either.

Cabbage rolls are delicious. Sadly the French toast not as delicious as I recalled a bit to eggy. Fast friendly service. A Melbourne institution

We were in the mood for a fresh bake, so off to @babkafitzroy we trooped. This cosy and rather homely looking bakery-cafe is an institution in Fitzroy, and has a menu with some Eastern European influence. It also looked to us like it’s run by a family but don’t quote me on that.
We got a wedge each of the bestselling Lemon Tart and the Pecan & Honey Tart ($9 per slice). Like the rest of their cakes and tarts, these came with whipped cream on the side.
I honestly feel, that afternoon, we had stumbled upon the most scrumptious Lemon Tart ever It’s not the fine and delicate style but substantial with a solid crust that has bits of chopped almonds for fragrance and texture. Love how the whipped cream rounded off the zingy lemon curd oh-so-beautifully.
The Pecan & Honey had a potent aroma of honey which differentiated it from other pecan pies / tarts I’ve had. And it also benefited from the voluptuous mouthfeel of the whipped cream too.
To pair with them, I picked the Smoky Samovar, a Russian Black Tea - it certainly lived up to its name and exerted a strong presence.

I’ve been eating at babkas for over 20 years. I’ve happily accepted the wait staff lottery -where you could get the excellent service or practically no service at all. Unfortunately lately something has changed. The food is a long way from where it was. Much to my embarrassment I managed to eat an entire blintz before it became apparent the filling had ‘turned’. I put it down at first to having a strong coffee at the same time, but my first mouthful of blintz 2 gave me clarity. On a prior visit I had the swiss oats - and the overwhelming taste of mashed banana - surely not I thought? But yes it was there. My grandchildren religiously order french toast - am I imagining they used to have a cinnamon/sugar sprinkle (could be, I may be confused there with how I make it). The coffee has definitely improved though. I know times change, but recipes don’t have to.
