Very clean everywhere and well-maintained kitchen. Beds were a little squeaky so I felt bad for my bunkmate. Great atmosphere too and lovely wall painting!

We had a lovely stay at the Pickled Frog. We arrived by bus from Launceston and only had to walk up a few minutes, so the location was great.

It is also very close to the city centre and cafes and restaurants.

The lady at the check-in desk was very friendly. The room was very spacious, with a big kitchen and bathroom. The bed was very comfortable.

We'll definitely be back when visiting Hobart.

A very interesting hostel - character home vibes as it was once an old pub. It’s very old and run down, this ads to the character vibe. It’s a very social hostel and easy to make friends. The room was very musty and smelly, as it’s an old building. I did love the sheets and duvet tho, I had great sleeps there. The kitchen was medium size but very dirty due to people not cleaning up after themselves. Location was walkable - maybe 10min to the shops. Overall had a great day, just wanted to share my experiences.

Close to the center, the location of the hostel is a big positive point (Gym, pool or park less than 500m away).
A warm, family atmosphere which kept me in this hostel for several months, you can easily discover the gems of Tasmania by listening to the advice of the staff.
Pleasant, family-friendly, clean, it’s a favorite to have been able to live in this establishment.
I'll be back!

Great people, great drugs, the shrooms were on point and the pool table was fun. Plumbing was a bit dodgy. The hot showers were good fun with the see-through curtain. The frogs were kinda creepy but I liked it. The exit sign was really Bright but overall a really nice place:)

Pros
- close to venues for Dark Mofo (city hall, odeon, library, Murray Street for Night Mass)
- staff are really friendly, helpful and welcoming
-

Cons
- bedrooms are all upstairs where floors are really creaky and every footstep is echoed through the hallway into the rooms. Room number 3 was probably the worst given the one set of stairs was right next to the door, and the bed - so there was a lot of foot traffic and noise that passed us. Beds were creaky too. Bring ear plugs, you'll need it.
- rooms are crammed with beds, with the addition of other people's belongings strewn around the room it can get pretty cramped to move around.
- during dark mofo, attracted more party types to come stay - which when combined with echoy floors and crammed spaces, it did impinge on sleep and relaxing
- not well aerated in rooms, communal area, kitchen and bathrooms.the entire building really
- shower stalls had corrugated iron walls separating the stalls, some of the walls had oxidised leaving a reddish brown stain on the floor which wasn't sightly. The shower floor also wasn't separated from the bathroom itself, meaning the floors were often wet. I personally found that pretty yucky.

Probably the best hostel in Hobart. The staff was very friendly and I met some great people there. The rooms were a little bit cold though. The hostel felt like a home, with people hanging out together by the fire, watching a movie or even playing some games. Would highly recommend!

I actually really enjoyed and appreciated the hospitality and homely warmth you want when travelling
I highly recommend dropping in, all staff are amazing especially the owner

In the hostel drinking some teas
All different flavours from the people I see
As we sit in a group
Some of us read
While others upon the tv
We drink and feel warm
Plus people around us come to that term
This place is unfirm
A place to feel warm
If you want a room
Or even some grog
Well come on down
to the pickled frog

Firstly, reception offers a free beer if you leave a good review. That explains the numerous good ratings. It's a typical dingy, carpeted old house style hostel.
Secondly, I got bedbugs and the manager was so unprofessional and intimidating. He aggressively told me not to leave a bad review including bed bugs. I had a bed bug in a plastic bag to show him. He was agitated and dumped the bag onto the bar saying he didnt see it. So unprofessional. He was interrogating me asking me where I was before, suggesting I brought the bugs. Terrible experience. Manager curly white hair guy, awful. Needs to learn how to handle these situations when running a hostel.

Wow am I glad that i stumbled upon this gem of a hostel. I had booked in to a different hostel initially just up the road but it had no atmosphere so I thought I would go see if there may be a better option around. Just a block over I found The Pickled Frog. I was greeted by a lovely girl named Jack. I felt so welcomed and at home that i decided to cancel my other booking and move down the road. There is a great bar which you can sit at and drink local beers and chat to the other guests and staff. Every one was so laid back and friendly that it really does feel like a home. The rooms are comfortable, the facilities are clean and the common area is super social with the added bonus of a pool table. The manager was a really nice guy with a pretty cool head of a hair and the other staff member Josh was a real champ. They all made it such a great experience! Thanks guys, I'll definitely be back! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Loved this hostel. Such a social environment, with super helpful staff. The bathrooms were always clean and the beds comfy.
Make sure to check the daily activities and grab a drink at the bar!

+ Affordable
+ Loads of open-minded, friendly people. Therefore easy to socialise with strangers
+ great music in the lounge area (60s to 80s mostly. Fleetwood Mac, The Who, AC/DC, Lou Reed are some artists that I remember)
+ nice art on the walls
+ Big TV with netflix and lots of movies
+ pool table and arcade machines
+ Overall great vibe
+ Free parking, but you have to be lucky to find a spot as everyone of course wants to park for free. No big deal with a motorbike

o Furniture is a bit run down in some places, didn't bother me as it kinda compliments the vibe

- Shower doors and ceiling in the hallway in front of 1st floor bathrooms are mouldy. Not surprised after I saw the bathroom ceiling fans completely blocked by dust. Should be an easy fix
- Extremely smelly male bathroom on ground level, can be smelled even when walking past. Should be an easy fix as well
- Uncomfortable metal spring mattresses

All in all I can really recommend this hostel as it is the most social and cozy hostel I have stayed in so far, though management needs to adjust the cleaning procedures a little.

Kitschy, eclectic space with a great vibe. The dorms were clean, the common spaces ample. Staff is incredibly patient and helpful. Salamanca and Constitution Dock (MONA ferry!) are a 10 minute walk, in addition to lots of eateries ($-$$$$) and groceries. Communal luggage room available with lockers for a fee (didn’t use cuz my dorm mates were awesome and there was plenty of storage space under and around the bunks). Minimalist accommodation but so cozy and welcoming. Will definitely stay here again!

Dissapointing.
Downstairs bar and nooks for seating dining. Warm friendly welcome but then went downhill from there.
Security lax with open rear windows. Noise from tv till midnight, common room till later. Cleaner emptied bottle bins 6am! Dorm a mess. Door handle broken. No bed light. No power or usb. No shelf. Sheet felt and smelled unclean. Pillows need replacing. Bathroom upstairs and all the way to rear of building. Maintenance lacking. Door missing from mens toilets.
Would we stay again. No.

Excellent stay! My group and I were there this past October. Comfy beds and the staff was super friendly, we arrived early after a week doing camping so they allowed us to us the showers and the all the facilities (common area, laundry, kitchen etc). I will go back without doubts

Absolutely disgusting place to stay. Walls peeling, cheap metal sheets seperating showers and toilets, 1 sink for whole guys bathroom for entire hostel. Hostel kitchens can be bad but this takes the biscuit. Fridge doors let the heat in so lost alot of fresh food. Wouldnt be suitable for farm yard animals let alone people. Only glimmet of hope we're the poor souls suffering the same treatment.
P. S. If you have read the other bad comments the owner responds childishly and doesnt take criticism on board to help with this crumbling business which leads me to believe there is no hope for this place

Terrible service. Tried to book online, no confirmation email received. So tried to book directly through the pickled frog website straight after; still no confirmation email/notice received.
Organised elsewhere, then got charged twice and told by an employee that I stopped others from having a place to stay.

For a hostel with a bar, it's really good. Just not my style. I didn't sleep much because noise is LOUD until 11pm and the lights in the hall shine right through the glass on the door to my room. They covered the glass in paint, but not dark enough, so it was super bright in the room at night. Lots of noise from the hallway and the men's bathroom (it doesn't have a door! Ew.). But, one night there before I flew out was fine. It's more set up for younger folks. The staff are super friendly!

Excellent hostel. Rooms can be small and a little tight with the bunk beds, but that is the standard in any hostel. Great social areas to hangout in complete with a TV which has always got a movie rolling, and a Pool table (1$ a game). Good staff, cheap beer. There may not be space in the fridge to keep food you are taking but that aside, The Pickled Frog is a win.
