The Happy Backpacker reviews
10 A great stay overall! The bar below isn't too loud and the streets are quiet at night. Both of my sleeps here were excellent, which is the main thing. Kitchen facilities are good and there's a lounge too. Inclusion of a towel is nice.
The bathroom facilities, while functional, could do with an update. Check-in was bizarre and meant waiting at the bar below for a few minutes until a server was free to check in. Would love some signage or something. Check out was at 10am but I'm not sure how you'd check out early as this is when the place opens. Luckily the staff were quite friendly.
I arrived in this backpacker around 10 pm. And then two receiptionists were on the way home. When they saw us, they did their best to help us to check-in. I really appreciated that.they are so nice, friendly and perfect. Thank you so much
No hot water in men's showers, passive aggressive notes left in kitchen even if you wash your dishes and leave them out to dry.

Tends to be busy with fruit-pickers in the warmer months. While polite, they get up early noisily, and corridors are packed with crates of their work wear and dirty boots. My room smelt like cigarette smoke. Great location but prefer not to stay owing to the fruit-pickers, sadly.
Great backpackers in the heart of Penguin, part of the Neptune Grand Hotel. It has great facilities with a kitchen and dining area, 2 lounge area's, a laundry and outside balcony to see the ocean. Very clean. Rooms have very comfortable beds a table and chairs and a vanity unit. For the price this is fantastic. The staff are lovely and particularly Ally who offered to help up carry our things upstairs.
Rooms were OK. Room could have been brighter or furnished with more welcoming atmosphere. Room has a sink, showers and toilets were shared. No kitchen but shared microwave and TV in lounge.
Not a happy backpacker! If u arrive after 10 pm even after having a conversation with the staff, expect to cross your fingers and randomly hope there might be a person around to let you in! No one answers the phone after 10pm even if u were told there would be and there isn’t anyone at reception or on the premises to let u in to give u a key! Luckily for me there was a bar staff member just finishing up cleaning who was surprised to a person knocking on the back door to be checked in! If u didn’t let me in I would have had to sleep in the car! Really unacceptable! They should have simply told me we don’t check people in after 10 pm and I would have booked somewhere else rather than tell me it was ok when clearly it was not! And the worst thing the next day when I spoke with the guy who had taken my phone call a few days earlier was rude and didn’t care i almost had to sleep in the car! He said “ not his fault and what do u expect it’s a backpackers! ” Clearly he has never stayed at a backpackers before! And this place is actually a hotel come backpackers so not really it’s a basic hotel and not the beautiful feeling and hospitality of a real backpackers!
Best backpackers we stayed at while travelling around tassie. Very friendly staff and the rooms were large and clean. We stayed here the night before boarding the Spirit of Tassie as it was an easy 20 min drive from Devonport.
Good place for sleep, good price if you book weekly and it is only 3 minutes of the beach, it is a quiet and relax town, the hostel has good wifi and good kitchen, you have 3 little supermarkets close (IGA) and if you go to Ulverstone you have Coles and Woolies and other shops. I really enjoyed my stay in this hostel:) I love Penguin town!
