The Grand Hotel Launceston reviews
37 Very quiet, ok room.
Very stuffy, no fresh air.
Coffee machine didn't work only found that out at 6am in the morning on our departure also there was no hot water that same morning.
I don't think I would stay there if we came back.
Everything here was wonderful.the room was immaculate and very well appointed. Colby was very friendly and looked after our every need. Definately highly recommend.
Thanks Colby

Not value to money, overpriced comparing to services and hotel quality. A died and dried fly was found at the bottom of my room’s window. Will not clean your room. Very old building. Why four stars?
HORRIBLE AND SCARY HONESTLY (FYI long review ahead)
Warning- I didn’t take photos of this place as it was horrendous. However, I have attached my iPhone location of the only photo (my English Breakfast tea) I took in that hotel to prove that I visited this place.
1. THE SMELL - We stayed in the top floor with the balcony view room (not sure whats the exact name of that room called). It was a large room with 2 double beds and one single bed. However, the minute I walked in, the room had the worst stench. It was disgusting, it had an almost ‘old, dusty, not cleaned enough’ stench. I understand that its a “vintage” hotel but no one asked for a ‘vintage smell’ along with it.
2. The scary bathroom wooden door - the room had one bathroom and that bathroom door was like it came out of a horror movie. It looked as if someone used an axe to cut the door open diagonally and tried to forcibly enter the bathroom to do God knows what. I know it sounds like I’m being dramatic but I’m not. It was cut deep through enough to see the bathroom light peeling through the large slit. It’s not gonna cost you a lot to change the door, just change it.
3. BEDS PLACEMENT - I genuinely dont even know how these people run a hotel. The three beds were placed RIGHT next to the toilet. Like, one of the beds was like a few cms away from the toilet. Dont get me wrong, the room was more than BIG enough to have the beds put in the opposite direction, but no. Ugh, you dont know how much of an inconvenience this is until you’re living in it. Every time someone goes to the toilet at night, the rest of the people sleeping in front of the bathroom would wake up. The smell, the sound and everything else from the toilet was for anyone sleeping in the front to enjoy. Awful.
3. CLEANLINESS- there was 0. Other than the toilets, nothing was clean. It was dirty and stinky, definitely NOT a 4-star hotel.
PLS, just pls save some money, energy and just book another hotel. We found this place as there wasn’t much choices in Launceston. BIG MISTAKE. Never again will I visit this place. Its more of a $90 per night hotel, 4-star my foot.
If you like a touch of history then this place is great. The rooms are a throwback but with modern updates. The restaurant is pricey but food is excellent with local produce. The Head Chef is a perfectionist which is what you want in high-end food.
Awesome stay with family. They upgraded the room for free to spa family room and my little one absolutely loved spa every night during our stay. Thanks to the friendly staffs!
Really comfortable, quiet, well-located within walking distance of everything and great value for the price. Will definitely stay here again when in Launceston.
We are staying at The Grand Hotel for our last 5 nights of our 6 weeks in Tasmania, we are on night 3. Great location, central to everywhere, great staff, clean rooms, we love the heritage building.
Jude and the team are absolutely amazing and I can’t fault them, We had a very spacious queen room with a comfortable leather lounge, bed was very comfortable too. Crockery & cutlery were included in room. No cooking facilities, but when I asked about a microwave I was so surprised when I was told one will be brought to my room. Thrilled I could hear up home cooked food.
If I could give a 10 star review I would for service, cleanliness and location.
Thank you
Room was clean and well appointed. TV did not have smart features so just free to air channels. Could not cast from phone. Coffee in room was instant coffee delivered by packet and via a pod machine. For me, would prefer Nespresso or equivalent pod machine with real coffee.
Amazing staff wanting to help out guests where they can. Very relaxing stay and good place to recover after the Overland Track!
Classic old hotel. They don't make them like this any more.
Good and flexible service. Thanks!
Hi,
As much as I’d like to recommend this place based on the wonderful historical interior and design, I cannot.
Service -
Firstly, there were issues before we even got to the hotel. They took double the amount of payment from our account and we were not advised about this problem until we called after seeing the money taken out of the account. We were not advised about the accidental transaction even though they seemed to be fully aware of the situation. Since the money wasn’t refunded until we caught the issue, we are now waiting 3 business days on top of the holiday period, which has majorly inconvenienced our trip.
Ammenities -
Moreover, during our stay, the room was not cleaned once and the ammenities provided were not enough on the first night. When we had gone downstairs to get more during the second day, the staff were disgruntled because we had walked down at 6, which was when their reception closed.
Room Condition -
Rooms are well decorated and hugely spacious, but there is a lack of ventilation. Although there is a small air conditioner, there are no windows that can be opened apart from the door. However, opening the door opened our room to a host of bugs.
Cannot really complain too much about the rooms themselves, but I would not touch this place with a ten foot pole due to the way they handled our situation.
Excellent stay in a well appointed, large family room. Recent renovations have retained the historic charm and character of this stately hotel. This was the best value family stay we have had in years, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to all manner of travellers.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel Launceston. The location is ideal with easy strolling to plenty of attractions plus on site parking. Our room was quiet and cosy with a very comfortable bed and large bathroom. The staff were friendly and helpful. Jude, the new manager introduced herself, she was keen to hear our thoughts. She said her team are working hard to make sure every element is right. We wish them all the best.
Avoid, not worth the risk. They double booked us on New Years weekend and didn’t have a room for us. We had the email confirmation and everything. It didn’t matter for them, they had problems with “their system. ” Zero compensation offered and lots of troubles for us trying to avoid sleeping in our car with all hotels booked out for the weekend. We ended up cobbling together multiple hotels.
As much as I’d like to recommend this place based on the wonderful historical interior and design, I cannot.

We loved staying at The Grand Hotel Launceston. The hotel was clean, tastefully decorated, spacious and centrally located. Would definitely stay there again!
Wonderful views in all bedrooms
The rooms are tidy and clean when you go in to them
The location is pretty good. Nice view of the city.
Nice classic hotel. Stayed here for 3nights. Wall is bit thin, family stayed next room, I can hear little bit. Didn’t bother me.
Well cleaned everyday with amenities, nice staff. Thank you
Absolutely lovely place to stay, the location is great within walking distance to central shopping district and historical locations. Well worth the stay
