Port Arthur Historic Site reviews
71This is a place you must visit in Tasmania, because it is about how Australia first developed. It is the history of Australia.
Please keep one full day or two half days for this as it needs a lot of time. We could see only half the place in half day. The free tours are quite good. The cruise included in the ticket price is not to be missed
If you can't have whole day reserved for this site, then $47 per adult ticket plus in out total two hundred kilometres petrol, don't worry for deep pocket person anyway.
The tour was informational and the site itself was amazing. Definitely check it out if you're in Tas!
Walking through the thicket was to be honest not uniquely Tasmanian excpet the plants that looked like party blowers, its still a good walk nevertheless. The staffs were Very friendly!
Buried with a rich history, this place tells the story of British admin of convicts. This is a sad sad place with death seems quite imminent to the convicts, even if they gained freedom but remained pauper
My friends wanted to visit this place but I was a bit apprehensive to pay $47 for a pass: p
Place was massive, everything was well kept and curated. You can really see how passionate their staff are in preserving and sharing the history or this landmark. Glad we went!
Pet friendly historic site, the price includes the walk tour, harbour cruis, and two days of self time on the site.
Beautiful garden, friendly staff, nice cafe.
Highly recommended
WAY overpriced. The 20 minute ferry was nice and the 40 minute tour was interesting but no way was this justified at $45 per person. Most of the buildings are empty, filled with mould, or worse: filled with junk.
A menu from 1997 and a copy of Oliver Twist, printed in 2005 are NOT historical artefacts worth an admission price. I’ve probably got a pair of Space Jam socks from ‘96 I could offer this exhibit for a reasonable fee!
Wander around any Australian farmland and you’ll find decrepit buildings in the same condition of the same age, for free.
Tasmania has so many beautiful and spectacular sights and experiences, it’s a shame Port Arthur left us feeling ripped off.
The included tour is fascinating. I didn’t appreciate the significance of Port Arthur until now.
This is an unsettling, but important place to visit. Couched in all the conveniences of cafes, restaurants, museums, and memorials to a time thankfully past are remindere of some inhumane methods of rehabilitation. I hope we have learned to be better humans since then.
Amazingly beautiful place, a great mix of old and new and well maintained grounds. Such interesting history - it is what you make of it. Spend at least an hour exploring, 2hrs preferably! I recommend one of the tours as well - the ghost tour was great. Very knowledgeable staff who clearly love their job!
Terrific tour today with my girlfriend, Jess (The Primary Lantern Holder) Guided by the brilliant Nat. Fantastically immersive with her glamorous and exceptional acting and story-telling!
The overall experience is fabulous. Starting with a quick 45 minute guided walk and talk. Then a 40 minutes cruise around the bay. All included in entry the price to Port Arthur historic site. Best to get there early as you can spend a whole day walking around the site. Entry last for 2 days, so you have plenty of time to take it all in. Everyone visiting Tasmania should do this time permitting.
The experience was great, though a bit pricey in my opinion. I'd recommend it if you're particularly interested in the colonial history of Tasmania.
A step back in time to the early settlement and convict era of Australia. Great to visit without the crowds and take in to place.
Had a beautiful day out and had lovely weather. The included guided tour and boat tour were excellent value for money.
Staff were friendly and the Tour's are informative while keeping the experience fun. Grounds are beautifully kept. Free walking tour and Boat tour included in admission fee.
Beautiful site with fascinating history, interesting tour guides, a lot to see - tickets are valid for two days though which is great! Definitely recommend a full day if you can't spare two.
Really enjoyed this Historic place and seeing the buildings that were built by the convicts was interesting. Also to see the memorial of the Port Arthur massacre in this very place was very heartbreaking as it happened 25 years ago in the year I got married to my beautiful wife. This trip to Tasmania was our 25th wedding anniversary get away and it did not disappoint. Highly recommend Port Arthur but pray that the weather is kind to you as the constant rain can spoil the mood.
