Wonderfull experience seeing the little
Penguins.
We visited on 23/01/24 and the penguins started coming from 9: 41 pm.
The volunteers lady was saying the earlier nights they came at 9: 10pm as they record the timing for each day.
My girls were counting how many of the penguins came and that were about 16 of them.
Fantastic experience and the best part it’s Free.
We are from Victoria and for a family of 4 they charge around $200 to see the same at Phillip Island.

Worth the visit. In Jan, arrived around 9.30. There were more than 10 penguins. Free entrance.

Penguin viewing time best at sunset.
Well done to the Penguin volunteers for keeping this natural experience so well kept.
I rode my bicycle from town to here. There are a few good hills, but a very picturesque 7km bike ride.
Unfortunately, it was 4 pm when l got to viewing platform, so no Penguins to see. I'll be back again.
You can go along the path to the beach up until 6 pm. Then it closes.
The sign says after 9 pm is the best penguin viewing time.
The walkway & platform are great for viewing. The beach is beautiful to walk on too.

Very nice and well maintained viewing platform. Did not manage to catch pengiuns but still worth the visit. The beach was very pebbly and took a perfect round one home as a souvenir.

Large platform, very close to penguins, 30 cm. On the other hand the red lights are extinguished when it is not the full period which is a real shame because at the end of June we saw about ten of them and fortunately we had our own red lamp…

Great platform to view and visit the fairy penguins. Even though it was winter we still saw one and heard many. Very well set up. Free

Fantastic up close and personal Australian Little Penguin Experience. A bit over crowded at first, but if you stay later, the crowd dissipates so you can see more.

Great spot to see the little fellas in their natural habitat. Great ranger led information session, and the volunteer guides were keen to answer any questions. Well lit with red light to help with photos.

It’s was quite busy when we were there so if you have small kids I would recommend coming early to secure a spot (school holidays). The penguins come over a long period so eventually you get to see it all. It’s not the size /as many as you see on Phillip Island in case you were expecting a large amount of them.

I really enjoyed watching the penguins up close. They don't come up the beach until it is dark and they feel safe. They can be a little hard to see as the only light you can use is infra-red. It was also cute seeing the babies wait for their parents to return. I advise you to take an infra red torch with you because without one you have to rely on the rangers or someone else to provide the light or you won't see anything. We got there really early and it was a long wait. Take warm clothes as it gets cold. It can also be very popular and crowded. We found getting a front row spot wasn't the best option as the penguins are hard to see coming up the beach. You are better off hanging back and following the rangers as they will follow the action. As the crowds dissipate it gets even better as you will find young waiting for their parents to return and experience their reunions up close. The pictures don't really do the experience justice.

We arrived at about 8.45 to see the penguins just after 9.30. It was well worth the wait to see the penguins come to shore and their chicks come out. Bring a red light and be patient. It’s pretty special.

Fantastic, lots of penguins, chicks and adults, they walk up the beach and right under the platform to feed. Bring red light, dress very warm as it was very windy and cold. I had a great time

The Lillico Beach Conservation Area is located 6 km west of Devonport. Throughout the penguins’ breeding season, from late September to early the following April, about 7 km away from Devonport and open 24 hours.
Penguins make their way to the depths of the sea every morning and return to their shelters in the late evening, only 25% survive. They are also food for wild dogs on land. Therefore, with the support of volunteers, barriers were built to prevent penguins from becoming food for dogs.

What beautiful souls (aka the volunteers) who come down every night to show us there this wonderful little animals. I just think it’s so wholesome and heart warming. Never seen wild penguins before. They are so informative and you can tell they really genuinely care about the animals.

Whilst the season ended on 20th April 22, I decided to take a punt on the 24th. Rocked up at 6: 45pm and to my surprise, immediately heard twittering and other noises. Saw around 10 penguins with very little effort! Please come prepared with a red light to avoid disappointment. Some other people turned up after and they had no light.

I also tried Redbill beach in Bechino a few days prior to no avail, so I was very pleased!

U can only see this in early evening when it gets dark.

Note penguins there are sensitive to white light which means no mobile phone torch or photo camera allowed. U need to use special red torch light.

The female guide was fantastic and answered all the questions the kids had with great patience. I also learnt a lot about penguins from her eg they change feathers once a yr in autumn.

There are lots of penguins and they are very cute. If your kids never seen a penguin, then this is a great experience for them.

Only a short drive from Devonport, make sure you don't drive too fast or u miss the u turn on right lane.
