Maritime Museum of Tasmania reviews
47An excellent snapshot of Tasmania's fascinating maritime history with some great exhibits.
Very friendly staff welcomed us in. The museum isn’t huge and if you don’t read many of the article descriptions you can be in and out in no time. Otherwise allow about an hour and I found it all quite interesting but at the same time maybe expected just a little more. Overall though, worth a visit
Great way to spend an hour learning about tassie maritime history, I didn't realize the second world war made it to this part of the world! Very friendly and helpful people at the front desk. Very convenient to visit and would recommend.
For old fashioned maritime tragics there is a treasure trove of artifacts, models, and odd bits and pieces. On a regular basis throughout the year there are exhibitions by Tasmanian artists that respond to the permanent exhibition. At present women artists respond to the way in which the sea is often associated with the idea of conquest or acquisition through works which highlight the nature of the ocean and the impact of pollution on it.
I really lucked in during this visit as two musicians were playing in the stairwell, their response was a musical one, and absolutely wonderful.
Lovely staff, great way to spend afew hours and some great history (love the little Lego's everywhere)
The museum tells the history of Hobart's maritime affairs, including Aboriginal, British colonial, World War and post-war periods. There are not many collections in the museum, mainly small ship models and equipment replicas, and there are also small exhibition rooms displaying artistic creations related to the ocean. Adult tickets are 15 yuan. Generally speaking, the collection is relatively small, but the staff is quite friendly, and relevant knowledge can also be obtained through text descriptions.
Small but very interesting collection, staff interested and very friendly. Some excellent local maritime history.
For a small entry fee you will gain access to history of Tasmania and indeed Australia you may not be aware of or at least, not in as much depth as here.the staff are friendly and willing to assist you with understanding of the layout and artefacts on display! Particularly enjoyed the respectful displays and sharing of Indigenous Australian history which all of us can always learn more about might I add the occasional jokes and spottings of mini fig legos were also a bit of fun
I'm not overly interested in maritime history but it was such a lovingly curated space full of fascinating objects. The staff are so very friendly and informed and love to chat. Would I go back? Maybe not but I'll tell everyone else to go!
A wonderful display of Richard Bennett's Sydney Hobart yacht race photographs. Exhibitions change frequently. Always an interesting museum to visit.o
The volunteers there are so friendly and inviting. Taught me and my partner a bit about the history and what was in the museum.
This is the last place we visited before leaving Hobart to go back home and I am glad we did. A fascinating history of ships are on display. Our favourite displays were the captain's cabin and the Antarctic research vessel area.
The gentlemen helping at the museum are also very friendly and helpful.
You'll probably enjoy this museum a lot more if you're already into boats and maritime history. Unfortunately the $14 admission price it's not really worth it for me. The gift shop is also a bit underwhelming.
Awesome museum, highly recommended to visit. Amazing history and the staff very friendly and informative. Loved the visit and recommended to everyone.
Excellent little museum. It's not huge, but it's very interesting and good value. I was well entertained and educated for about an hour and a half
An absolute hidden gem and I’m embarrassed to say it took three visits to Hobart to visit. A fascinating place full of history and information about the seafaring past of Tasmania, with the most friendly volunteers manning the joint. We spent two hours here but easily could have spent more. Highly recommended.
The Maritime Museum of Tasmania in Hobart is a lovely museum with lots of detailed and fascinating information about the seafaring history of Tasmania, piracy, whaling.the exhibited items are fascinating and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my stay there very much.
Fitting tribute to Tasmania's rich nautical history. Beautiful Carnegie building near Hobart's main museum parking. 2 storeys but has a lift for easy accessibility.
Wonderful volunteer staff who are eager to share their knowledge and love of Hobart history. It is a real pleasure to hear them talk with such enthusiasm.
Great selection of old photographs and artefacts, intricate hand made ship models plus life size replicas of an Indigenous canoe and navy captain's cubby. Great fun to explore for young and old. Can walk across the road to eat waterfront fish and chips after your visit!
Maritime museum for a small entry fee you will gain access to history of Tasmania and indeed Australia you may not be aware of or at least, the staff are friendly and willing to assist you with understanding of the layout and artefacts on display!
This a quirky and informative museum with a range of interesting artefacts and stories that brings to life the rich coastal history of Tassie and its relationship with the sea.
It's very 'goldie locks' ie not too big - not too small but just the right! Theres a small entry fee and it's well worth it.
The team were incredibly helpful and super pleasant.
