Fantastic experience, quiet peaceful rooms, fire place inside that kept the room toasty. Pretty snug. No locks on the doors but we carried all of our valuables with us where ever we went. A surprise to have wombats roaming in the court yard in front of our room during the day and night. Wildlife paradise.

Stay in Maria Island is a must! It’s the best way to see the abundant wildlife that lives there: wombats, pandemelons, wallabies, kangooros, gooses. So the penitentiary is the best (and only) place to stay (the other option is the campgroung).
The accommodation should be booked in advance because there is only 10 bedrooms. Each one has 6 beds minimum, but they are not shared rooms, one more reason to book them in advance. There is no lights in the rooms and they get dark early in the afternoon, so don’t forget your torch. The toilets are very close as well the big main room, where there are big tables and a big kitchen with stoves and sinks (pans and liquid soap are available).
It’s difficult to give a note to this place because it’s so simple but it’s also so amazing because it gives us the change to be in this special place… a zoo without no cages

Big room with three bunk beds and picnic table, mess hall large with good gas stoves and pots and pans.

Nice place, you're always surrounded by wombats, wallabies and gees. Rooms and facilities are clean, there are wood ovens for heating. A big disadvantage is, that the showers are not working!
