Hellyers Restaurant reviews
39 Very disappointed with the experience at this restaurant. Beef Chi is a classy dish.but they did not have that night but they had a 200 g of rump steak. Rump steak is generally considered the lower end of steaks and is not worth paying the more than $40 for. All we got on the plate is the steak no garnish, no vegetables, nothing else but the steak. I swear my six-year-old nephew put it on the plate and brought it out to me. Obviously because we only received the meat on the plate we had to order the sides. The bowl of dry chips and the lettuce leaves with a bit of mayonnaise cost $25.
My local pub serves a 300 g rump with chips and salad for $28. ($15 on Tuesdays) I do understand the location but considering the restaurant did not have tablecloths or even a plate to put our bread on next to us. I do not consider a $70 steak with chips and salad to be a classy dish in the surrounds I was expecting.
My wife had the squid which was the chef special which she considered to be very nice. She also had the trout which would not have been 2 in. ².
On the plus side the staff were friendly polite and helpful. When a mixed up one of our sides occurred they were happy to not charge us for that.
There is a fine line between quality food and fine dining and when you feel like you are being taken advantage of. I feel this restaurant crossed that line
We were very disappointed with the restaurant. We were really looking forward to this meal, but all in all it really wasn't great.
The good. The staff tending bar was excellent, there was a good range of drinks, the location and decor were great and the atmosphere overall was excellent.
The bad. Our server was perfectly polite but wasn't up to the job. He provided wrong information on a couple of occasions.
The meals were only ok, and we all felt that they were overpriced and underwhelming.
We were expecting a fine dining experience, and we certainly paid a price commensurate with that. Meals were tiny (in line with fine dining) but the meals themselves were an extreme disappointment.
We had 3 of the 4 available main meals and they were all rated as a disappointment. Our favourite part of the meal was the mashed potatoes!
Good food, but a little pricey.
Special place to go after a long day of hiking.
Make a booking as tables fill up fast.
Saved by the friendly staff or this review would be 2 stars.
Menu is restricted, portions are tiny but tasty but the biggest shocker was the $44 cheese plate. 2 tiny triangles of cheese and a dozen tiny crackers! $44? You guys are definitely having a laugh!
Would I go back? No.
Would I recommend it? No.
Lucky the staff are nice….
Staff were incredible, lovely people and quick friendly service. Share plates was a fun concept and the food was great with the peppered steak being the standout. Definitely coming back
Californian girl cannot save this restaurant on her own
S41°34.717' E145°56.246' According to Lonely Planet, Hellyers Restaurant serves the best food in the area and offers friendliest service in this must-visit restaurant. The first thing we noticed was that the windows are too high to have a good look outside.
The enormous and extremely tasty serves, according to Lonely Planet, with steaks and Mediterranean dishes have gone out of the small mountain windows. The new thing is sharing: you order for the whole table and dishes will arrive in no particular order. In February of 2020, we ordered Tasmanian scallops as entrée: lightly pan-fried Tasmanian Bass Strait scallops served on a pea purée with morcilla, crispy prosciutto and Peoria kernels ($26). These coquilles tasted very good. Delicious. For main course, we ordered poached sea trout ($26), local seasonal vegetables ($12) and beer battered chips ($12). The trout was well prepared with good flavours. We enjoyed the large amount of vegetables along the fries. The kitchen can cook well and could claim the title in Cradle Mountain.
We were not so lucky in our choice of white wine. The La Villa Savagnin Spreyton ($59) was advertised with aromas of citrus blossom, lime and passionfruit, honeysuckle with a hint of mango on the palate. Unfortunately, it made a Californian Gallo & Gallo or marshmallow impression. Cheap sugar taste. The desserts, crème caramel ($15) and chocolate mousse ($15) were pleasant.
From the beginning, it was clear that too few employees served the customers in the restaurant. The girl behind the bar was an intern and needed help. The waiter from California (US) was experienced, had oversight under stress and tried not to rush the customers while the kitchen was signalling new dishes to be served to customers. The intern placed the white wine bottle on the table with the apology that she was busy. No time for a wine cooler and offering to taste the wine before serving to the guests. When asked for a spoon to serve the food on the table, the reaction was: “funny, everybody asks for a spoon”.
It is clear that Hellyers served much better food than Altitude, but both restaurants suffer from mediocre service. The Californian waiter could not save Hellyers.
Very disappointing experience.
The restaurant is beautiful but the food was underwhelming especially for the price. Out of six dishes we ordered three were frozen, the baguette, the fries and worst of all the local
seasonal vegetables!
The squid were over seasoned and so was the garden salad drowning in oil.
Selling mediocre food on small plates at a high price is not the definition of "tapas".
Avoid this tourist trap.
Food was good with good portion sizes however the scallops were mostly tail. Service really let it down, with young waitresses with attitude making us feel uncomfortable
They only serve medium size bar food. If you wanna have a normal portion of main, unfortunately this is the wrong place for you. When we, a group of 6 people, had dinner there, they made a mistake on our bill by adding 3 items we didn’t order. Among which, it is quite suspicious to put a bottle of wine we didn’t order on our bill. I mean this is not a easy mistake. I guess because they thought we are tourists so it is easy to rip us off. In the end, they corrected the bill by taking those items off the bill without making an apology to us. A bit shame.
Great place, tasty food and cool staff (apart from the bored young girl who failed with „greeting“ guests). Had an awesome evening!
Great friendly and attentive service, and the eye filler steak was amazing! The kids pizza wasnt much more than a frozen pizza from your local deli but kids didnt seem to mind.
A bit underwhelming. The baguette looked like one of the bake at home ones from Coles.
Chickpea salad was the only saving grace.
Price on the high side for tapas style dishes. The scallops were small and weren’t pan-fried properly. Overall food was average.
Ive heard that they've added Starbucks triple frappa doodles to their drink menu. We will definitely be visiting now!
Small serves. Over seasoned steak. On the other hand my fish didn’t taste like much. But good service overall given the location.
We almost had every dinner here during the trip in cradle mountain. The food is absolutely amazing. Best restaurant of our Tasmania trip.
Excellent food. As other reviews mentioned the portions are not huge, but quality over quantity any day. Great friendly service too.
Sharing plates were a novel idea and 4 was plenty, including desert for 2 adults. Food was good.
It's nice and cosy. Food was excellent especially the mussel and rib eye steak. The concept of share plate was good, if only the portion was bigger as the current size is more like for one person. Staff were nice and friendly. We would love to come back to this restaurant for another meal.
