Hamer's Hotel

We were kindly seated at the bar table by the windows as we have no booking. Our meals came quickly and were absolutely delicious. Pricing was a little expensive but for a special night out, very reasonable.

This is not just "pub grub", this was outstanding service, food and location. Cape Grim Rib eye fillet, Oysters with Nam Jin, my wife had the Ravioli which I could have eaten a main of.very very good food!

We're not locals. Despite other reviews about prejudice against non locals, we had a great time. Ended up going into the front bar three days in a row. With the meals we ordered there was nothing to complain about at all with a generous serving of salad complementing our chosen orders.
And most importantly pop in and see Tara in the front bar, she's a CHAMPION.

Wonderful staff all round, lots of laughs & welcoming atmosphere, especially as we decided last minute to head down, deciding a night out & not having to cook was the go & not having a reservation! Special thanks to the lovely young man who bought our drinks to the table. Comfy spot on the couch not too far from the fire was a perfect spot to cuddle up, sharing delicious entrees of calamari & oysters, before our mains. Thank you, we will definitely be back x

Food come after about an hour, which I think was just a mistake. Tastey, good atmosphere, and great staff!

It was so good we forgot to take photos twice in a row on the two nights we were here.

Cooked to perfection, really friendly staff and an excellent playlist.

Not a great vibe & got a dozen oysters, cost over $50 & some of the worse oysters I've eaten! Very disappointing

Lovely bistro with homey vibes. We sat near a large fireplace, which I’m sure gives off a lot of heat in winter. The food came quickly and was delicious and well priced.

It was very busy so luckily we made a reservation for 6pm, DON'T go without booking ahead. It took nearly an hour to get our food and when it arrived they got the order wrong. One meal received cold chips instead of the potatoes, and my rare steak was almost well done. We had the meals sent back to be fixed and when they came out again, we still didn't get our potatoes. Being dairy intolerant, I asked for mayonnaise but apparently they didn't have any so they gave me tomato sauce without asking me first which was annoying as I don't like it. The food was okay I suppose but then at the end, we were asked to leave our table as soon as we had finished as the next people who had booked had arrived. We felt this very inconsiderate, as the only reason we took so long was because they were slow and incapable of getting our order right. The next night we went elsewhere and I'm afraid that I can't recommend this "restaurant" as a place to eat.

When you walk in the locals will relentlessly stare at you. Then you'll wait 5min for any kind of service at the bar when first in line.
Then you'll pay $9 for a schooner of mid strength that tasted flat.

I got served a chicken parma which was just grilled chicken (no breadcrumb coating) with melted cheese over it.enough said. Steer clear, shocking food and a real strange hostess bickering with staff made the night uncomfortable too

Absolutely shocking service. Called to make a booking for dinner and got told we couldn't book and to just show up. We showed up to be told we should have booked and they would "see what they could do" after I explained (and showed on my phone) that we had tried.
Found us a table and left us for 20 minutes. Had to hunt a waiter down. They took our kids orders and drinks orders and rushed off before we could finish. They weren't overly busy as many staff seemed to be chatting while clearing tables. Kids meals arrived and we asked to order our food. They said they would send someone over. No one came so we found another waiter who said they could take drinks orders but not food. Kids finish their meals and start getting bored. It's 8pm by now and still haven't ordered. We FINALLY order. $50 for a steak.an hour later, it's now 9pm and no steak. Other people have had 3 courses by now. Steak arrives at around 9.10pm. No salad or anything, just a steak and potatoes for $50. Steak was ok but definitely not medium rare. Potatoes had been cooked and rebooked and were basically rubber. Tried to get a waiters attention but got brushed off many times. Ate my steak, tried to talk to staff to let them know how bad it had all been but they just weren't interested.
Sad that this is what is happening in this beautiful little town as it has so much potential and there are not many food options. We won't be back.

Lovely dinner and atmosphere. Staff are friendly. A well managed restaurant, well priced. Best meal of our holiday.

After a big day cruising Gods country on the rivers, thought it would be a great idea for the family (including a 16 and 13 year old.this is important) to stop into the local hotel, well positioned across the road from the wharf, for a drink before dinner. Much to my surprise, my 16 and 13 year old were asked for their ID as they DO NOT serve anyone under 18 years old. Now let me tell you.my kids weren't to drink alcohol as that would be against the law. Just a coke and lemonade, whist being supervised by adults! Nope. Under 18's are not allowed AT ALL in the bar. No acceptions. So we took our ideas to spend dinner and other incidentals elsewhere. Do not come here, not family friendly at all. Get your drinks from Thirsty Camel and drink in the comfort of your room.

The food here is great!

I had a Parmi and my wife had a schnitzel.

They were huge and crispy!

Perfect after a day enduring the cold. Good beer selection and cosy seating. The staff were great too.

Pretty ordinary. I'm a garlic lover but I could not stomach the potato. Schnitzel was burnt around the edges. Wouldn't go back.

The Chowder had a weird sour flavor and contained very little seafood and had frozen veggies in it, shouldn't of ate any as a result got food poisoning
maybe make fresh and don't try to store old leftovers to save money,

Meals came out quick thou so that's a positive

We got takeaway from here and it was all delicious. The meals are of a decent size and are reasonably priced.

We visited just after new year, and didnt know much about the town. We came to know that the only place in town to eat was Hamer's which seemed fine. Love a chicken schnitzel!
We enjoyed our meal, standard pub food but it was nice. I especially want to commend the gentlemen we dealt with behind the counter. It's a shame I can't remember his name, perhaps Simon? He (and the rest of the staff) were under huge pressure- the play had just finished and the pub was extremely busy with tourists as it's really the only place to eat. We decided to grab the last table in the bar area (not the bistro) but nevertheless it was packed.

Our food was taking a while, understandably due to the pressure but after around 40 minutes I did politely enquire as to where it was, just to make sure the kitchen had the order more than anything else (we were fine having some drinks- by the looks of it some other customers need to be more understanding). The employee took it in his stride with a smile, and came out with our food, hot 2 minutes later and apologised for our wait. He also was dealing with other customers, some of whom were not being very nice to him, with a smile and with patience.

The pub itself probably needs a bit of tlc, the food we had was great, but our experience was made by the staff. Well done, Simon- I hope I've got that right, and also well done to the rest of the staff. Not all customers don't understand the pressure hospo workers are under, especially in an environment where you're the only place in town trying to serve 100s of tourists at peak time. Top work!

Unless you’re at the door at 5.30pm (walk in only) don’t bother. Not suitable for children, small bistro area for seating and no allowances to sit in bar area for children to wait for a table. Staff not accommodating at all and it would appear most hate their jobs or the way the establishment is run…I get it! We got takeaway in the end and we were one hundred percent eating before people that had entered at 5.30 and we ordered at 6.30. If you travel here, go to IGA and cook a meal…Hamers were absolutely hopeless.
