Devil Campervans

We booked then read some of the reviews and were a little concerned about what we might find. No need at all. These are budget campervans so they have gone further than the much more expensive ones. However, contrary to some of the reviews we found the folk at Devil Campers very friendly and helpful. The van was absolutely spotless (which has not always been our experience with other outfits) and everything was ready. Well equipped kitchen stuff, mostly new and well set up. It all worked perfectly well and the vehicle drove very well too. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone who doesn't need the latest shiny model and doesn't want to overspend. Will happily use them again.

Not recommended, better: discouraged! …the van was in very bad condition, especially in terms of road safety!

Ended up refusing to go through with hiring a van from this company as the original van and the replacement both appeared to be grossly unsatisfactory and I had fears about whether the vehicles were roadworthy.

Reading the reviews here subsequently I am glad that I did not go through with the hire. I can not recommend dealing with this company.

The money I had payed was refunded promptly and it did not appear that the company held any malice towards me.

As per my partners review I have to say the same.
Unfortunately I have to recommend not using this camper hire company. I was willing to look past the initial terrible customer service on the phone and in person, but the van we received was definitely not roadworthy. The last thing I expected when paying $166 a day was to worry about our safety daily. We’ve had no option but to report it to Transport Tasmania. A brief list of the issues below.

Wipers needed replacing; it was actually easier to drive in the rain not using the wipers.

Water leaked around the windows and onto the bed

The tyres did not have enough tread and were illegal (confirmed at a tyre repair shop) as one of the tyres had a valve leak.

Terrible noise when turning left, suggesting either bearing, hub or bush damage

The fumes coming into the cab when stopped for longer than 15 seconds was almost unbearable. Caused headaches after breathing it in for hours on drives.

Guzzled oil; during our 2500km of driving we had to put 2.5L of oil in. So potential oil leak somewhere

Water temperature gauge was sticky, this coupled with the constant need to put oil in the van had us concerned whenever we were no where near a small town.

Issues changing gears; potential gearbox, clutch problem?

Drivers side window felt like it could snap at any minute, which meant we avoided winding the window up or down (hard when the cab fills with fumes)

Handle starting to come off drivers side door, wouldn’t be hard to break into. Difficulty locking the hightop window (wouldn’t be difficult to break into when we couldn’t lock it)

Overall, there looked like there was some newer vans in the yard, these ones may be roadworthy and more suitable so I cannot vouch for those. I couldn’t imagine how much was being charged for that. Every time we saw a tassie devil camper on the road we just had to say “poor buggers”. We had let the manager know of a few of these issues but they were waved off. I loved when I had mentioned that the van leaked and the response was “yeah unlucky you guys had a rainy week”. It rained for one day. It shouldn’t matter even if it rained all month? Please think again and pay the extra money elsewhere.

One of the worst costumer service experiences I've ever had. Unfriendly, not willing to solve the problems we had with the van right from the beginning. The van worked ok for us but the whole dealing with the rental guy was not pleasant at all.

FINGER WEG!

Easy smooth process, van came with everything needed for travel. We had one of the older vans and it had a mechanical issue half way through our trip, however they were quick to supply us with a replacement van (an upgraded one as well:) thank you) and we were back on our trip. I would hire from them again.
