Sept 2022: this venue is always great fun. Still jaded by the NYE experience. Bar staff seem to be charging the correct prices now, so can only imagine the team member in question has been talked to.

Jan 2022. It only takes one staff member to ruin a good five star rating. I've always enjoyed Alter, either as part of the hanging gardens precinct, or as a standalone entertainment venue. Dark River (Mona - Riverlee partnership) have clearly spent a decent amount of time and thought in creating this space. Sound is always brilliant, ambiance awesome and service usually spot on. Except for this NYE just gone. There was one bar lady who was rounding up all drinks by between $1 to $1.50 each time. All other bartenders charged the set prices. I noticed this and thought it was just me. Two tap ciders were $16, however each time she charged, it was $18. I wasn't happy, and didn't want to make a scene. My mate was also at the bar and raised the same concern. He even logged into his bank account to show her. She fobbed him off and threatened to cut him off accusing him of being drunk. Logging into my bank account clearly shows two different sets of charges. Either she was rounding up for tips, or just overcharging. I hope Dark Labs/Dark River investigate. The sale records from the night should clearly show these anomalies.

Nice venue good atmosphere. Couldn't see what drinks were in the fridge so dropped a star for that

Early evening drinks and food truck style eats at hanging garden, then dance it all off at Altar, DJ and live music.

Last I checked Australia had legal tender. This venue declines to accept it. Under the guise of covid, hygiene whatever it doesn't matter to me. If you refuse to accept the countries legal tender its goodbye from me.

Had a fabulous night. Four letter fish are amongst the most talented musicians Tassie has. Love their music. The Alter is a great venue, staff were friendly. Thanks all for a great night.

Always a good venue for most any music. When you add in The Hanging Gardens facilities as well (may not always be operating all hours) this is an awesome venue.
Just as well perhaps that you can add in 24 hour Pilgrim Pies!
