Umoona Opal Mine & Museum reviews
50We really did enjoy the shopping with Ivy. She did an amazing Job as our Saleswoman. Wifey found three awesome opal jewelleries. We wish Ivy happy travels and don't forget to go to Lucky Bay near Esperance
Very cool place to visit. We didnt do the tour itself as done a similar one just before. We visited the museum and shop and that itself was worth it. Very interesting information. And the staff are very friendly and helpful, explained us a lot about the different opal kinds. Thanks lots
Beautiful place!
Exhibits of fossils and prehistoric info are lovely.
Mining tours are widely spaced (time), so if you miss one, you might have to wait for 2-3 hours.
Shopping for Opal is expensive here.
Zoe was an amazing tour guide! She's the best kind of town ambassador - peppering the tour with stories of her childhood in Coober Pedy and local history!
If you are thinking of going on the tour, do it! We are so glad we did the tour and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Josh was a great tour guide and it was definitely special that he had local knowledge. We learnt so much and will recommend it to friends and family. Thanks Josh!
The short film was very informative, and our tour guide was really great! He managed to remember so much information and delivered it in a way that kept both the kids and adults entertained! (Even when our toddler cracked a wobbly half way through!)
We wandered through the free museum and shop, very impressive and modern! Wasn't sure what to expect - but highly recommend. Well done!
I recommend the 60-minute tour (ours was with the very knowledgeable and friendly, Zoe).
A lot of the places in your town are all about the sell, but this one isn't so it's the one to choose, although, yes they have a massive range and all price points.
A tad disappointed. My wife had been here in 2019 and was excited to show me the place. The tours were all cancelled via a sign - no reason why - but the Ghan connecting busses had their customers go on tours. Hmmm. Also, the underground experience, and Aboriginal Interpretive Experience weren't open. All we did was walk around the forefront exhibits till we came to the opal shop, then left, but we were there for over an hour. I felt it was a business that had little time for walk-in-tourists if the Ghan was "in" that day. Pity.
Very educational, though trying to get my 6 and 4 year old to stop to look at the display was tough! They loved their Dinosaur and Butterfly Opal necklace.
Would definitely recommend
Great tour led by the ever colourful Rudy! All the children now want to live in a dugout! The movie at the beginning of the tour provides a wonderful account of the establishment of Coober Pedy and the tenacity of the founders. There is free tea and coffee to enjoy whilst looking at the beautiful jewellery for sale.
Tanya is a character she has some good little anecdotes, sense of humour which just adds to the tour. It is interesting, Tanya is informative about the mine and the history of Coober Pedy. Enjoyed the tour and our time there
Great set up very informative run by experienced people with a wealth of knowledge, thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
Had an absolute blast here. The quality of the opal found here is unrivalled, unmatched by anywhere in the world.
Excellent. The staff member TANYA was happy friendly and very knowledgeable and definitely an asset to the Umoona Opal mine and museum
Highly informative tour about the mines, opal, history of Coober Pedy, dugouts, and the current goings on within the town. Entertaining guide made it all the more enjoyable!
Great shop showcasing a lot of jewelry that has OPAL as the main feature
Has many historical photos and explanations of life and mining in Coober Pedy along the passage walls
Friendly knowledgeable staff
We had a tour with Tanya and is was fantastic. She was amazing, very knowledgeable and funny. Highly recommend anyone going through coober pedy to book a tour, well worth it
Super friendly staff. Worth visiting just for the displays and information about Coober Pedy and opal mining. The guided tour was also interesting.
