The German Cake Shop Family Restaurant reviews
72 Please everyone near and far, boycott this cafe. The owner Steven running the place is a racist angry old man. I witnessed him provoke and speak down to a group of elderly customers which made me sick and upset. Customers are important to a business and this old man is chasing them away with rudeness.
Customers are treated badly and made to look foolish. It’s embarrassing on all levels.
Had a terrible experience dealing with him and his bad attitude. He made racist remarks about Asian people to me and could be heard by other customers who happened to be Asian.
The customer service is the worst I have ever encountered and then some. The staff clearly don’t know how to greet and service customers.
The food is horrible and tasteless. The cakes here are old and stale look like they have been sitting there for months. Nothing is fresh and that could be a food poisoning issue especially with the cream and custard cakes. Very overpriced for the poor quality you receive.
The place is a ghost town and that is evident with the way the place is run. It has a negative atmosphere and a dated vibe.
The racism here should enforce a closure because Hahndorf is a tourist Mecca and this shop is a stain on not only Hahndorf but tourists themselves. Steven obviously has no education or tact in dealing with paying customers.
Avoid this shop like the bad plague it is.
On one final note, I noticed cockroaches coming out of the kitchen, flies on the cakes and cob webs everywhere. Call the health inspectors and shut this monstrosity down.
Disgusting, pathetic and horrible, avoid.
There are other places more deserving to visit. Ones that are not racist.
Grumpy staff whom don’t know what hospitality means. Made to feel like they didn’t want customers there. Everything was a hassle. Strudel was fine but suggest take away.
Luv this place been going there since I was a kid and still go there over 35 years fly from Sydney to go there especially for the besting cake it is beutiful and addictive and customer service is friendly and professional will always go back
First place I have seen that allows dogs in the cafe! Food looks amazing however only vegan option was a Cornish Pastie. I would have liked to have tried a vegan sweet.
Quirky place but really good authentic German baked buns and cakes. Can't go past the poppyseed strudel.yummo
Wonderful apple strudel! Make sure you check this up. Also they've got a wonderful collection of German antiques. It is fascinating to see a wide variety of beautiful clocks. Just make sure you do not touch any
Great service my first time ever eating a cake called bee sting and omg it was to die for best cake ever I even brought some back to Sydney with me
Omg can not fault the place. Lovely staff and the old gentleman who was serving was so lovely. And omg the best ice coffee ever
Beautiful spot filled with antiques, clocks, and vintage vibes. We had coffee and strudel by the window; rain hail and fog complemented the perfect ambience. Definitely recommend checking this place out!
The deserts tasted so bad. The coffee was just about ok. The place is cool to sit though. I feel it’s over rated just because it’s an old place.
Apple strudel was average. The old male attendant corrected me in front of other customers for calling a macaron a 'macaroon'. When we asked for an extra cup to pour some tea from the pot for our 3yo daughter, he refused until we had had to explain it was for our little girl that wanted to taste some tea. Not coming back!
Great place! The beesting is a must! So delicious, the custard, cake and biscuit crumb top so yummy!
You can taste traditional German cakes that are not sweet and tasteful, and you can get a glimpse of German culture such as antique watches, plates, and cups.
The cakes, pastries and coffee are good. But dining experience was terrible - plates were taken as soon as we finished (without asking if we were done), shushed by proprietor (kids were talking and laughing, but properly behaved in their seats). Buying a cake to share dining in was discouraged - we were told we can buy, but no forks or plates will be provided.
If I could, I'd give this business minus stars. Not an ounce of German charm in any part of it!
We went to Handorf on Sunday Jan 8th 2023.my husband wanted a genuine German hotdog.we thought that this place would deliver on that. NO. A big fat no. He may as well have gone and bought a stale bun! The sauerkraut was old, the pork sausage was flavourless.and this supposed delicacy was originally$15 but ended up being $17 because my husband wanted cheese on it! I got a steak bacon and cheese pie -without any cheese in it. We got a soft drink from the fridge to share - those 3 items cost us $29.80! What a watse of money! The server of the food had filthy hands and fingernails. The plates were dirty.
The owner was obnoxious, answering our questions rudely. Do yourself a massive favour. DO NOT EAT ANYTHING FROM THIS PLACE.
Wonderful cakes with friendly service, this Cafe is worth a visit to the area. You will find a wonderful collection of antiques within!
Quirky little place to head for a coffee and cake. Both the coffee and cake were excellent. Your eyes can really wander in a place like this. It’s got antique German clocks and dinnerware hanging everywhere on display. Pretty cool.
Looks small from outside but the biggest surprise ever. Very nice cake+ very nice Shop. Loads of antiques in the shop. Highly recommend
Been here everytime I visited Hahndorf. Display is not the best, however the bee sting I had here is by far the best tasting one I ever had.
We had coffee and dessert here. Price is moderate. The place is full of clocks, antique, plates and paintings. So it's not suitable for very young children who like to touch and explore. Service was ok.
