The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park reviews
4One of the best walks in the Southern Flinders. Its definitely worth doing the loop walk if you have the time. A lovely gem of a spot just north of Quorn
An excellent patr of South Australia.
Take your time, be prepared and enjoy the walks, wildlife and views
10km loop! Says will take 5hrs but took us a bit under 3hrs. Very nice hike with beautiful views and plenty of kangaroos. Some bits are on an incline when walking and mostly flattish. Can get to without 4wd. A must when in flinders rangers
Came up for the October Long Weekend to conquer the Dutchmans Stern Hike, which was very popular for our time here. We had the map from the start of the trail to follow, and numbers on the trail markers match the brochure on the anticlockwise loop, so adjust your reading accordingly. We chose to do the clockwise ascent to the top, with the steeper, shorter part left for the descent. Still very impressed by how many parents were carrying their kids up the steep section!
The clockwise incline was moderate if you are a regular hiker up hills, was great for improving stamina and endurance for a longer incline effort. Thankfully markers are placed every 200m to help with focussing and goal setting, and despite a few rest stops on the way up we still managed to do the hike in about 3 hours (we aimed for 4 as a target).
We stayed in the Dutchman's Stern Homestead, which was a fabulous way to rest after the hike with a glass of red and a hearty meal before a hot shower and a well deserved snooze. They Heysen Trail accomodates part of the lower loop around the Dutchman's Stern, and made for a good 3 km loop from the homestead the days after.
