St Andrews by the Sea Uniting Church Glenelg reviews
6I am aware of how hard-working, generous and kind the community spirit is there. Just an observer.
The church doors look closed, but there’s a warm and hospitable community support centre open on Tue, Thur & Fri, and worship services on Sunday.
It’s almost like a secret centre! The entry is not very visible - via the church car park behind the church and the almost hidden gate situated between the church and the chemist on Jetty Rd.
Inside, the church volunteers - easily identifiable in their bright green and white striped aprons - are always ready with a welcoming smile and an offer of free coffee, tea, hot soup and a snack of the day. On the day I visited, there was fruit cake baked by a volunteer, doughnuts and a tomato vegetable soup on offer with a bread roll.
The volunteers shared that the support (pantry items and fresh), cafe and op shop are all volunteer-run and exist on donations. Local businesses including Caruso’s, Bakers Delight and Coles are regular supporters as are community groups like the Holdfast Rotary Club.
If you are in need, drop in. And if you have more and are able to share, please do.
Nice church at the strategic location of Glenelg beach. I like the architecture of the building which makes the presence of a church or God to be felt.
I would like to visit from inside sometime later.
The volunteers who fed us starving souls are heavenly creatures, and the food was divine. Thank you, appreciated x
Attended a wedding at this beautiful church which has exquisite and ornate features. It is situated on Jetty Road, Glenelg and has a great variety of coffeehouses and restaurants situated in close proximity.
The current church building, including the chapel and the church hall have beautiful stained glass windows, some of which have been incorporated from other churches durig refurbishments.
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday they run 'Open Church' where anyone is welcome to enter the church to have a look at the building.
They have a Friendship Cafe in the Church hall, which is open on certain days in the original church building that opened in 1859.
St Leonards Chapel (on the left as you enter through the main entrance) was added in 1992.
