Kay Brothers Winery & Cellar Door reviews
22What a wonderful vibe. We loved our wine tasting experience, all the wines were delicious and the service was amazing. We will definitely come back here any time we’re in mclaren vale!
Service is exceptional, winery beautiful and wines top shelf. Cannot recommend this place more highly.
Thank you Sebastian for all the information and experience.
First time at winery for a music event. The winery is putting on a monthly Saturday night show. The venue was lovely and the music great. Staff of 3 catered well to the crowd making sure everyone got their drinks, seating and where facilities were. The food truck was great serving South African food. Wonderful buns scooped out with lashes of different curries poured into the hallowed buns topped with chilli pickles, Greek yoghurt and coriander. I really enjoyed the lamb and my partner had the chicken. The owners of the food truck (BunnyChowNow) explained the way they served the buns before we ordered. The whole night was extremely pleasant and so enjoyed the great music from Summerfield Band. People got up and danced and we all sang along with familiar tunes. A credit to the lady who organised the whole night. Definitely going back to other events.
The best winery we visited today. The wine is lovely and the setting is absolutely superb. Definitely worth a visit… the Hillside Cabernet was nice. Staff were great (? Helen) and was v knowledgeable
I recently had the pleasure of attending the Kay Brother's Winery Cellar Door. The setting is stunning with views over McClaren Vale hills and a nicely appointed tasting room.
We were greeted by the extremely friendly staff member who sat us down to an empty cellar door tasting room. The cellar door has provisions for children and the staff were keen to accommodate this, in a clear effort to enhance our tasting experience.
Kay Brother's offer a tasting flight model, offering a curated selection of their wines (essentially entry level, higher end or a mix angled towards grape varieties). Each flight typically included 5 wines.
Tasting pours were generous.
Their wines speak for themselves, they are delicious, arguably some of the best fuller-bodied McClaren vale reds I have tasted in quite some time.
We ended up purchasing wines - where we were very quickly offered members cellar door prices for our purchase, and also offered additional tastings of other wines not listed in our selected flight.
The tasting flight fee was, however, non-refundable on purchase and was required prior to attendance via an online booking service.
This is an extremely friendly winery with a delicious range of wines on offer. It does however, lose a star due to their decision to host a wine flight tasting model and do not offer a refund of tasting fee on purchase (as outlined below).
I am highly adverse to the emerging trend of wine flights as tasting models for SA Wineries - these railroad you into tasting a narrow selection of wines on offer, are frequently inflexible, convey a degree of pretentiousness about the brand and add additional expense to the 'experience'. I have no objection to tasting fees, however strongly feel these should be refunded in full with purchase of wine from the cellar door (with or without minimal spend).
The winery has a lovely setting & previous experiences have been very pleasant. However last week the experience was not enjoyable. We had the $10 tasting and when I asked how would I taste 2 other reds (with the intent of buying) the person serving was rude & addressed the others in my group saying “Wasn’t he listening? ”. She then left us with an empty glass for over 10 mins. I was then told that the tasting charge was not redeemable upon purchase. The great attraction of the wineries in SA is that the tasting charge is waived upon purchase of wine, especially for members. The winery missed out on a significant purchase. The other 2 wineries visited on the day were very accommodating with very knowledgeable employees.
Really enjoyed our afternoon sitting at our table overlooking the spectacular scenery and enjoying a nice red from the cellar door. Our host for the afternoon was amazing and made us feel at home. Looking forward to coming back with friends to enjoy what this amazing place has to offer.
Beautiful spot to relax and have a picnic, great wine. Favourite winery in McLaren Vale. Just sux their out of my favourite one Nero, hurry up and make more otherwise nice relaxing day up there. Friendly laid back staff.
Amazing all round. Helen was superb. 10/10 wine, scenery and chat. If coming to mclaren vale this place should defo be on your list.
Absolutely love this place. Their wines always stand out here. Cracking view with outstanding service. It's hard to not find a wine you'll love here.
Amazing view! Whenever we have guests visiting us from overseas, we sure brought them here for picnics and we do enjoy their wines as well. Quaint and picturesque for picnic with family, friends and pets friendly as well. Staff has always been welcoming and friendly. It’s has been our most favourite place since day one we visited that winery
So far my favourite winery in McLaren Vale. We had plenty of questions and Sophie answered them all. Wine tasting was free but had to pay $5 if you wanted to try the the wine from the 125 year old vine wine. So we did, Worth it!
This is a fabulous winery with spectacular views and a good range of quality red wines as well as a very pleasant rose. Bob, our host, was very knowledgeable about the winery and wines and also happy to share general local knowledge. We will definitely share this winery with visiting friends.
If you want a taste of old school McLaren Vale, this is an unmissable stop. Backing onto Hardys on one side, with the oldest (documented) vines in the vale, there's some treasure here. They may be old school, but their Grenache certainly doesn't taste it.
Check out the barrel hall and the basket press!
Great Winery and really warm, charming people. We were there 10/11/18;11/10/18 if that is your date format. The wines are superb. The historic/current tasting a great experience. I would highlight the superb wines tasted and bought, but only after I have been back and bought more. One of the best Cellar Door experiences. They also have Picnic areas, plus some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. I don't think they do bus tourism, so best to enquire if you are a mass mob. Service very professional, knowledgeable and engaging. A South Australian Great.
We did the History Tour, which was such a good experience! Helen is a lovely lady with a lot of knowledge about the rich history of the winery and the Kay family. Because it's a small winery, you really got a good understanding about the wine-making process and its challenges. Can highly recommend it.
Visited the Kay Brothers cellar door last week. Lovely cellar door staff - friendly, generous and informative as per the last time we visited way back in 2010. Uniformly good reds (as well as Tawny and Muscat) across the board and quite reasonably priced for the quality. A must stop in McLaren Vale.and some great views out to the hills as well!
Tasted some lovely reds, and a very decent muscat too. The lady at the cellar door was friendly and knowledgeable, and also offered some brilliant recommendations for other cellar doors to visit.
Definitely worth a visit. Great scenery and wine
Beautiful winery and great cellar door. The views are amazing and we found it very kid friendly.
Fantastic selection of wines and the staff were exceptional. Great view. Wish we could have stayed longer.
