Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park

Came out this way in 2005 on my way from Brisbane to Adelaide.the interesting way
Incredible stark beauty were words just cant do this place justice.
Arrived here just before the water did from the floods in north Queensland via Cooper Creek etc.

Australia’s largest salt lake, Kati Thanda has a catchment area from three states and the Northern Territory. The lake itself is huge, covering an area 144km long and 77km wide, and at 15.2 metres below sea level, it is the lowest point in Australia. Flood waters cover the lake once every eight years on average. However, the lake has only filled to capacity three times in the last 160 years.

You may feel a sense of isolation standing on the dry lake edge and seeing nothing as far as the eye can see – yet with heavy rains and the right conditions the lake comes dramatically to life. When there’s water in the lake, waterbirds descend in the thousands, including pelicans, silver gulls, red-necked avocets, banded stilts and gull-billed terns. It becomes a breeding site, teeming with species that are tolerant of salinity.

Away from the lake, the park features red sand dunes and mesas. They rise from salty claypans and stone-strewn tablelands.

Great National park, a very amazing experience with all the beautiful scenery and trees and plants. There is a great team of staff who are ready to help you as a guide. Not too hard to access the park and usually not to busy throughout the whole year.

My harness was loose and I almost fell off the earth it was a very scary experience for me but it was a nice place to stay

I spent a beautiful time with the family this week on the Kati Thanda-Lake. One of the most beautiful areas of SA. One of the most unreal places on the planet. Just breathtaking. Precious and Pristine!

The lake was full and beautiful. This truly is a sight to remember. Its a chance to see the wonderful creations of nature.

The inland sea of Australia. It's inhospitable location caused many people who tried to reach it to perish. It's beautiful and remote, well worth the effort getting there. Make sure you're well prepared. Bring sufficient water and fuel. There is no shade. During peak season you will encounter many travellers so you won't be lonely. The track to Halligan Bay is not for the faint hearted. It has serious corrugations and deep ruts.

Not much out here. My rating is based on the sheer bewilderment I had for just how barren, isolated and alien it is. I didn't find it a pleasant place.but the experience is definitely worth it. Good toilet facilities and table with benches and shelter.

Simply beautiful, by foot or helicopter flights.bring lots of food and drinks because there isn't much to offer in terms of hospitality along the way.

Wonderful that the lake is filling good to see some birds around. We also flew over the channel country, a wonderful green in the desert. Then returned to William Creek and the long dry returned.

Very corrugated track out to Halligan Bay. Nice little campground with long drop toilets. Plenty of flies though. Was hoping to see some floodwaters but they hadn't made it that far yet unfortunately

People this is a hot place to visit when traveling. Bring at least 5 igloo with water and a sun
screen lotion to enjoy the. The place is dry up like desert and no lake here

Everyone should visit lake eyre wether there is water or not. There nothing around so make sure you have a 4x4 and food and water and watch out for running emu's. The track in there is very corrugated so let your tyres down and take it easy.

Why the hell y'all call it lake? It doesn't even have water. Btw, I'd visit the Australian outback. Some day

This is one of if not the best Australian Outback experiences.
I feel that you have to drive there to really experience the enornity of the Outback and the country as a whole.

Go perpared as you do really need to be.
The people in the Outback and the people who travel there are happy friendly helpful people.
Heat is your worst enemy as temperatures really get high through the summer and a lot of places colse during the summer.
The Outback has got to be one of the more remote places on the planet.
So worth exploring and a long visit.

Just visited the southern tip of the lake, near the Oodnadatta track. Stupidly drove out onto the salty sand. DO NOT DO THIS! Luckily got ourselves out but you WILL GET BOGGED. On our way back we found more people bogged and were able to help. Park on stable ground at a lookout and walk over the salt if you must, but don't drive on it unless you absolutely know what you're doing and you're some sort of outback god.

Roads in from William Creek (West side) and Maree are unsealed but trafficable by 2 & 4wd vehicles in dry weather. Roads are in the main well maintained. Camp site on east side ('The Neck') is superb.

Camping fees and entry fees can only be payed online for a place that is several hunder kilometers away from the next telstra cellphone tower?
Awesome drive out if you like desert scenery, to ask for money to camp here is a joke though, its a desert. You can camp wherever you want.
