This quiet, unassuming place hides a wealth of knowledge.
It really doesn’t look like much as you enter, but the coffee is definitely worth it! (Still haven’t tried the teas as yet) Classical music in the background, the smell of caffeine, and plenty of places to sit for a while to relax
The proprietor, Simon is extremely well informed about his brews, and takes great pride in making a great cup of coffee.
Kappys has two coffee machine, including the oldest working machine in South Australia circa 1951. It takes 35 minutes to warm up and is only usually turned on Friday and Saturday and only makes double ristrettos. This machine takes longer than a modern machine to extract the coffee, and uses half the amount of water, but there is no acidity in this brew - definitely recommend trying this if you are a coffee fan.
Kappys also offers some interesting teas if coffee is not your drink of choice.
There is only one cake made daily by a retired chef - I was lucky enough to have the mandarin and almond cake, which was so moist and had a loads of texture (but not too sweet) and it was the perfect accompaniment to the coffee that I had that day.
Kappys is also the cheapest place that I’ve come across and doesn’t charge for alternative milks either, which is a pleasant surprise.
Don’t expect bells and whistles or Instagram pictures, but for people who are truly interested in a good coffee experience this is certainly a place to come.

The BEST espresso we have had. No question. Simon, the owner, takes intense pride in his coffee, raising it to an art. Sources his own beans, roasts them in site. You get fresh coffee, choice of a dozen types of beans. And uses an original espresso machine.
This place is the highest level coffee and teas, and yet the prices are less than anywhere else

Awesome place to peruse the multitude of high quality coffee and teas. Brilliant staff who are truly experts on coffee and tea. Simon is a total legend. Keep up the great work. Our family have been customers of the Kappy's establishment since inception and have never gone anywhere else for our teas and coffee. With this quality, why would you? !

Not a fancy place, seemingly a garage rather than a tea house but the owner knows its stuff well. It ticked my box as a respected tea house. I was looking for a decent Pu'er in the city. They served me with the pot of second-round hot water, as the first round is just to "wake the tea up". The tea is of good quality, as it stands the test of third-round of boiling water without losing much taste. In my experience, it is either more than 3 years' old or from a rather old tree in Yunan. A truly pleasant afternoon tea experience. The roof is laid with old coffee bean bags and an oldest coffee roaster in the middle of the house. It appears to be a house full of stories.

They make the best iced coffee ever! Delicious the whole way through also love the cute set up & how you can see the massive coffee roaster when you walk in! 10/10 would recommend to everyone that loves tea or coffee! They have a beautiful selection of loose leaf tea’s & various coffee beans available for purchase, there’s so many to choose from!

Best tea shop in town, hands down. Buy regularly.
Enjoy a coffee made onsite with their own roasted beans as a weekly treat with hubby. Beautiful range of tea, coffee and herbs. A unique place whose owner, Simon, is passionate and knowledgeable about his craft. Highly recommend the cakes made by Allan. A sweet treat to compliment an aromatic coffee.

I organise a Meetup group and we came into Kappy's yesterday for a tea tasting, Simon opened Kappy's up especially for us, the tea tasting and talk about tea and its history was incredibly interesting. Kappy's is a unique, comfortable and cosy place definitely worth visiting.

Great quality, nice decoration and vibes.
I had a late with a piece of carrot cake for only $6.
Both the coffee and cake were perfect.

First time getting a coffee at Kappy’s and pleasantly surprised with the homely interior and amazing service. This place is far beyond your standard cafe. They roast their own beans, have a wide selection of roasts and brews, and top it off with amazing service and fair prices. Got a cappuccino with oat milk, which was made perfectly, and was also entertained with pleasant conversation while it was being made. The interior is beautiful, with plenty of visual installations, making a perfect spot to hangout and soak up the culture.

Best Coffee and Tea in Adelaide. Owned and operated by the lovely Simon and his team. I particularly recall the excellent service of an Englishman by the name of Clay.

Five stars!

This review is about the coffee, I'm not sure about their tea.

Note that this place has changed owners in the last 4 or 5 years so some reviews are redundant. The old owner, Joe, was old school but was pretty good at roasting coffee and restoring old Italian machines. I used to buy beans because they were fresh and good all round blends for milk based coffee. The single origins were never of much interest.

The new guy, Simon, is admittedly more into tea than coffee. He's been shown how to use the roaster but really doesn't have any technical knowledge or apparently much care. I say that because lately when I've bought beans they've been mottled, all at varied roast depths. The result is bitter and frankly a chore to drink, unfortunately I bought a whole kilo.

The staff, particularly a tall fair haired lady, acts like she'd really rather be somewhere else and is often hostile when asked the roast date of their blends. I was holding out for this new crew to get it together but after 4 or so years I won't be back.

Too much coffee that you find is weak, milky and cold, even worse bitter. I found a solution, hidden away just of gouger st, on compton st is Kappys, they serve good strong, hot coffee that isnt bitter.

The other existing reviews are misleading for a coffee-lover. While the tea selection is phenomenal and has everything you would imagine, the coffee served today tasted muted in flavor, bitter (similar to over-roasted beans) and was served extremely hot (the milk was unfortunately burned and affected overall flavour). Perhaps I got the team on a quiet day with old beans, or maybe my palate is broken. Service was friendly but quiet - a lot of people like this. I didn't feel like I was looked after - lots of staff standing around preoccupied with their daydreams.
I suggest coming here for a cup of tea and a relaxing afternoon, but not sure I'd come just for the coffee.

Best place in Australia to taste and purchase quality green and black teas. The only place playing old school records, too!
