Josephine's Gallery and Kangaroo orphanage reviews
35Few places can rival the heartfelt dedication and passion this kangaroo orphanage exudes in caring for its beloved animals. Combine this with an authentic art gallery and shop, sprinkled with delightful, humorous anecdotes, and you’ll soon realize the extraordinary experience that awaits you here! A visit to this sanctuary is an absolute must for anyone, and the fact that it’s nestled in the heart of Coober Pedy only adds to its charm.
Such a special place. Amazing artworks to admire and buy with a small sanctuary as a bonus. I even got to cuddle a kangaroo baby.
So many talented artists work on display. If your lucky you may even get the opportunity to meet some of these artists. I got to meet Tommy Crow, such a great bloke and extremely talented.
Jo and Terry, who run this place, are the most wonderful people with the biggest hearts. Apart from running a gallery full of wonderful Aboriginal art and selling some opal jewellery (this is Coober Pedy, after all), they also run a kangaroo orphanage - but they'll take in any injured wildlife. They hold kangaroo talks 5.30 pm Mon-Sat, gallery opening hours depend on traffic and season. The lovely Judy also helps out with running of the gallery and caring for the joeys.
There's $10 ($5 child) admittance charge but donations are very much appreciated as they don't get any government or other funding and all their money (just like any other wildlife carers in Australia) are spent on the kangaroos.
Terry has an amazing knowledge of the Aboriginal art so if you want to learn a thing or three, ask him!
Definitely a must if you're in Coober or just passing through!
Great place to visit to get some insight into how injured animals are cared for and the devotion that goes into it. Also a good range of native art!
Must visit. Bloody nice people and bloody nice art, stories and advice. Allocate time. I have been fortunate enough to go twice.and will drop in again if I pass through.
What an amazing place. Thorough understanding of indigenous art backed with a true passion of sharing the stories behind the pieces and their artists.
Out the back though is where the real magic is. As soon as you walk outside you're greeted with cheeky chatty birds and an elderly kangaroo that loves wasbai peas. But then. Slung of the shoulder of one of the nicest men in Coober Pedy, you see some paws. After a tasty bottle, she was off and hopping. Yes she looked like a drunk woman leaving the bar at 3 am but she was as cute as a kitten in mittens.
Get down there and support Josephine's. Definately one of my favourite places in Coober Pedy, actually. South Australia maybe even Australia X x ️?
Amazing experience hearing about the work they do. We got to hold Billy Bob, a young joey being cared for and then got the opportunity to feed the older kangaroos out the back.
Thankyou so much Terry for opening for us and talking through the history and the great work Josephine and yourself embarked on all those years ago.
I recently popped in here and felt quite uncomfortable with some of the things that were said about indigenous folks. It felt strange to purchase something from someone who held those opinions, so I left.
If you have kids, then this place is a must. Our two loved seeing the orphaned joey there, Billy Bob. They even got to cuddle him which was a highlight for them. Unfortunately we weren't able to make the feeding later that day but am sure they would've loved this too. Amazing facility and care for kangaroos.
Owners Josephine and Terry are wonderful and very friendly. Take wonderful care of sick and injured animals. Great job guys and thank you xoxo
Awesome place! The lady serving us was friendly, informative and just super nice. Really enjoyed it.
Did the 'tour' this afternoon, to be honest- It wasn't much of tour and the area was in a backyard. Initially we thought we had been ripped off $30 for a family was seeming far too steep. Then reality set in. These people clearly care deeply for the wildlife they rescue and care for. The money they take from 'tours' would unlikely cover even half of the costs associated with the upkeep. The work they do and the passion they have is very evident! As a tour- not worth the money- as a cause- worth ever. Single. Cent
Such an amazing job taking in these beautiful creatures and more please go and visit if you are in town and make a donation to enable them to continue to do so
Incredible experience! Loved hearing Terry's stories of rescuing kangaroos and other wildlife. A must visit in Coober Pedy!
Most incredible time visiting today!
The work done here is so impressive, and it was amazing to see the kangaroos that have been rescued and looked after here, including meeting baby Jojo the joey who was so tiny.
Terry is so passionate and it was really interesting learning about all the work they’ve been doing since they built the sanctuary 12 years ago. Could not recommend this place more!
Me and 3 mates had a sick time here, Terry was a great guy who really was passionate for what he did. Highlight of our stay in Coober Pedy!
Love the artwork as well as getting to see the rescue roos and the baby Joeys they are rehabilitating.
This place is something special! Josephine is an amazing woman! You can see the love and passion she has for these beautiful animals. She has amazing stories to tell and I learned some new roo facts. Make sure to make a donation as they are non-profit and solely rely on tourism to care for injured wildlife!
Highlight of our amazing adventure to Coober Pedy. Do yourself a favour and drop in. Don't forget to make a donation or purchase some artwork or jewellery.
