Art Gallery of South Australia reviews
67Fantastic, Spent the Few Hours with my Granddaughter for Her 14th, That's where she was wanting to spend her Birthday & had the family Enjoying our Day Together.
Visited the recent Frida exhibition and was shocked at how crowded it was and hard to view the art - timed tickets or a larger space would have helped manage this issue
Free entry to a fantastic resource of culture and history. Extensive look into First Nations art, historical european art, historical asian art, and modern worldwide art. Takes about 2-4 hours to see everything this gallery has to offer.
Visited for the Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera exhibit, during last days of the show on a Saturday afternoon. We were in Adelaide from USA and didn't know about the show beforehand. Happily surprised to walk up, get tickets, no waiting. Gallery was full but not over-crowded, I was able to see everything at a nice pace, didn't feel rushed, and everyone was pleasant and accommodating to each other. I was initially concerned with the lack of air movement and temperature control in the first rooms. But, couter-intuitvely, it did get better moving further along.
The exhibit was fantastic! I have seen exhibits of both artists before, separately. This was very comprehensive, with a wonderful variety of showings in addition to the paintings: home videos, displays replicating Frida's bedroom, wedding dress & memorabilia, 2 of Diego's enormous wall murals. Showing them together provided a broader sense of how their lives & art intersected, how subject matter was, at times, affected by their relationship, and the story of their country's revolution via their art.
Always a good place to spend a couple of hours soaking up at and culture.
The AGSA restaurant is great. Their Chicken Caesar salad is without rival. Best that I have had! Wonderful place for a relaxing lunch. Service is very good also.
Twas pretty good, some things ultra current, some things super old, but def something for everybody! Do it!
Amazing artwork with a number of different styles and periods covered. A wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
What a great place to visit! So much to see, beautiful artwork. Went to see the Frida Khalo exhibition, it was amazing.
The Frida Kahlo exhibit was interesting but one of the staff members made me wear my small backpack like a handbag because apparently "it might knock off one of the frames. " I'm not planning to scale the walls bestie, chill out.
Gorgeous gallery with lots of exhibitions. Appreciate most for the colonial part. That’s blooded and black history. Indigenous people were killed, people integrated. Need right attitude and courage to show this to the public.
A wonderful experience for my whole group! The tour guide was very informative and the workshop was a lot of fun! One of my favourite places to visit!
Last I was here, was with a friend.
Some time ago.
I hope there are more Resting Spots within each Gallery.
Some do have leather benches.
As you may need to sit to take your time to take In the Art Works in each Room.
Lifts are there. As option to the Hitchcock-ian Stairs.
Lunch and Good Coffee etc.
Nice quiet views, glass panes to the floor all around.
Though you can not Review Apps, I am very impressed by the Arts and Culture App, Free of charge, in the App Store when you type in Free Arts & Culture App.
I am recommending it here,
because I can not physically walk around such a big Space as our Art Gallery in the CBD.
I know I am not alone. What is so amazingly wonderful about this Free App for art lovers, beginners and physically challenged, is that there is an in built VIRTUAL TOUR - you press the arrows in the direction of the presenting Room you want to see more of, and when you have had your Fill, you press on the easy to see arrows that take you OUT of That last Room, into another.
This Virtual Tour really is like being there!
You could even make yourself a great drink and a Snack, sit in your Favourite place, and Enter our Art Gallery from where ever you are.
That’s my plug.
Adelaide may be small, and not so exciting as Melbourne, but we are an Arty Place, so always Art somewhere.
Visited during an exhibition of aboriginal art which was fantastic and great to see it celebrated.museum staff were friendly and very helpful!
A quiet stroll among the collection is always a pleasure. Some great old works as well as avant guard. Nice coffee n cake.
But that poor dead horse strung up at the front and placed so inappropriately among older paintings and art. Please put it to rest down the back. Gives us nightmares must be bad for children.
Very interesting place. Lots of art incorporated into the galleries with many indigenous pieces.
Very good place to see painting and photos of South Australians of yesteryear and also learn about aboriginal culture
Sooooo many wonderful galleries in this place, and they are doing great events. The last time I was there, there was a tapas and cocktail event with live music on the lawn. It was gorgeous. Can't wait to go back for a night out.
Great place to visit, our guide was wonderful, very informative about the current exhibition. Also did a workshop based on on of the Galleries artists. Highly recommended.
Highly decently unspectacular gallery filled with overly abstract paintings and comparatively many guides compared to visitors, but is spacious. However, the design of the gallery is slightly unclear.
Incredible contemporary indigenous Art on display. Showing a vision of the contemporary energetic living country we are in.
