Aroona Dam Picnic Spot reviews
5Just do it. Short drive from the main road. Just blown away by the size and beauty
This little gem is just south of Leigh Creek in South Australia. There is a short 2 kilometre dirt road to the carpark and there are toilets (well maintained) as well as tables and a barbecue. Great views and if you're a photographer bring your gear, you'll love the scenery, and if you have a kayak bring that as well.
Nice place to visit, beautiful views of dam and water banks. Nice BBQ and seating.
A lovely spot to view the bird life and have a picnic. Can launch your kayak and have a paddle.
A little oasis
The Aroona Dam was built to provide water to the township of Leigh Creek and the Leigh Creek Coalfields. The nearby Mt. Aroona is the site of Australia's first free release of captive bred Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies. The area was also one of the first areas where a large scale integrated environmental recovery plan was implemented. In the process, feral predators and competitors like rabbits, goats, foxes and cats were controlled. There was also a lot of work done to restore badly eroded and degraded lands. The area become a Fauna and Flora Sanctuary in 1990. Similar natural recovery schemes were later on implemented on a larger scale in the Flinders Ranges National Parks (Operation Bounceback). Much of the funds for the projects came from the Commonwealth Governments Natural Heritage Trust.
The Aroona Dam was in the past a popular camping spot for many travellers and remains a nice picnic spot.
