Women's Museum of Australia, (formerly National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame) reviews
16Good museum, lots of interesting stories about women. I liked the aviatrix tapestry, it was pretty and looks like a lot of work went into it.
Very engaging exhibitions and so much wonderful information about the women who came before. Thoroughly recommend this museum to anyone visiting Alice Springs!
This place is full of history. Allow more than 2 hours to get through here. There is lots of reading, plenty of audio and news reels from yesterday. I did find the men's section a little creepy
Interesting to see these places as a visitor we tend to not visit when living in town. The Goal was very cold.
Wow, the women's museum is amazing, had to come back the next day and do it again, so much to take in! Thank you
Loads of history on Australian women. Easily spend several hours reading and hearing all the information
Interesting but a bit disjointed. There's a section of jail stories but it's mainly from the perspective of the people working there and it's very uncritical of the fact that almost all prisoners were Aboriginal, which continues to be the case today. The section on pioneer women is interesting but parts could be more developed.
Loved the exhibits and inspirational stories. Staff were great. Good time and could have spent much longer if I had the time.
We visited the Women's Museum as a group of 2 adults and 3 children (one as young as 5 years old). The museum showcased the achievements of pioneering women and the changes they had brought to the world.
I was surprised to learn that as late as the 60s, women in Australia were expected to quit their job once they got married. There was an exquisite signature quilt that had been hand made with the achievements and signatures of 342 Australian women who were ‘first’ in their field. My kids enjoyed finding some of their sporting heros on the quilt - like Cathy Freeman, Ash Barty amongst others.
There are some interactive pieces as well including an old sewing machine that the kids could have a go at. We easily spent over an hour in the museum and then walked around the grounds.
The catalogue of ‘firsts’ was very informative and well presented. The volunteer was helpful and patient.
Awesome look back at the amazing women in Australia's history. The Women's museum & Alice Springs Goal are definitely worth a visit.
This is one of the most interesting old buildings in Alice Springs, you can even go into the old prison cells.
There is a lot of very well curated information about the history of women in Central Australia.
I spent 2.5 hours over two days wandering around this interesting place and could have spent longer as the exhibits were well presented. The volunteers were friendly and helpful
Some amazing history and photographs of early pioneering women. Also the cold impersonal cells of the men's wing of the prison was very sobering.
Very informative.
Time well spent there.
Actually in the old Gaol.
A very good musium
Great service from the staff at the front desk. Thoughtful suggestions on how to approach the tour.
