1934 Qantas Hangar reviews
30Officially known as the 1934 Qantas Hangar, it was built when the area was Darwin's first civilian Aerodrome. Heavily damaged during the first Japanese air raid on Darwin in 1942, it's been restored and is now used by the Northern Territory Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Club to display historic items from the Northern Territory's industrial past, including the NTs first locomotive, fire trucks, historic cars (including old US Army jeeps) and an NT Police motorcycle named "OINK". There isn't any food option on site, but soft drinks are available. An afternoon well spent
A fantastic free or donation based activity run by local car enthusiasts. An amazing collection of automotive items ranging from the tools to make them to restored vehicles themselves. Combined with the history of the hanger it makes for a great stop
This place is amazing. I could almost feel the history there. I couldn't believe I found somewhere in Australia that they don't charge you to go in, free entry. I made a donation and purchased a cloth badge. People in Darwin seem pretty friendly too.
Must see in Darwin lots of history here run by volunteers who are very passionate & full of knowledge very very good:)
The best kept secret in Darwin. The original last departure point from Australia for Qantas when heading for London. It's now the home of the Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts club of the NT. The club is dedicated to the maintenance, preservation, and restoration of cars, bikes, trucks, and the NT's Industrial history. A man shed of monumental proportions well worth an hour of your time if you love anything mechanical from the past.
Best kept secret in the NT. Fabulous use of historic hangar by the Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Club. A museum with character and soul!
Very interesting history in this building. Still shows some damage it received in the Japanese bombing of Darwin.
There is a large collection of vehicle memorabilia and stationary owners.
Well worth a visit.
Please make sure you give them a donation to keep this historical building open and running.
Fascinating building which is possibly the only place in Australia where you can see actual air raid damage from shrapnel and a bullet. These incredible marks on the steel framework are conveniently highlighted with bright paint to make them more obvious. I also took some photos of the old cars to disguise the fact that I was actually only there to see the air raid damage. I don’t actually care about the cars on display but I guess they have to find something to fill the building with.
Vintage and motor enthusiasts paradise!
Loved this place and the folk working/curating the place have SO much knowledge!
Such a cool slice of history, old blokes there are very friendly. Could spend all day there if it wasnt such a hot day.
Top spot with very interesting collection of cars and bikes and a heritage building with bullet holes from bombing of Darwin
Great little walk into history of vehicles.
Its free entry and 5 mins drive from city centre.
You only need about 20 mins as its a shed of cars, bikes, engines, trucks.
You can donate money if you wish to upon entering or leaving.
An interesting display. Leave a donation. So much work has gone into the curation of these items.
Chock full of great antiquities from the MVEC. The hangar has damage from WWII so keep an eye out for orange paint and see the sheer size of the holes!
Friendly chaps hanging out who are keen to give you more information if you like a chat. Merchandise available and donation boxes
Fantastic place to visit if you like old bikes and cars, also interesting history from the war.still see the bullet holes
I took my Father here today to check it out. I came back approximately 2 hours later and he still was not ready to leave.
He advises that the place is incredible.
One of the best collections of machinery that he has seen.
Absolutely recommend.
Wow, this place has so many beautiful restored cars, motor bikes and steam trains. Some amazing history, even the building it self has history. Will be going back.
Amazing array of boy toys muscle motors and classic bikes eye candy.
Motor enthusiasts get to store and show off their classic cars.
Trip down memory lane for anyone who did trades in times long gone.
I met a living legend of NT who was volunteering his time minding the display. My interest was steered toward what local stories he wanted to share.
If you are up for some Territory local history Mr Isod likes his coffee white with one. ️
An amazing and mostly restored collection of old machinery and cars.
You can also see some of the canon shell holes from one of the sixty four Japanese air raids.
Only a short walk up an alleyway from the Parap markets.
