A distressing experience renting through Curtis of Somerville RE. When we first moved in we raised concerns about the frighteningly low and extremely unstable balcony on the second floor of the house. The response was ‘not sure what we can do about that one’. Great.
Around 5 months into the lease we received an eviction notice with no prior warning. Curtis did not care for our side of the story, instead basing the eviction off of claims of notoriously difficult neighbours (none of whom had spoken a single word to us, ever).
After multiple conversations Curtis tells us that the owner changed their mind about the eviction but then changed their mind back, deciding to stick to the eviction… Very professional.
Fast forward a few months and we receive our notice from NCAT. Further negotiations with Curtis allowed us to stay until the end of our exams, and have the tribunal cancelled. Curtis forgets to cancel the tribunal (which occurred without us knowing, obviously we weren’t there, so we lost) and then tells us ‘I won’t tell anyone about it’. Approaching our move out date of 30/6 one of the housemates becomes a close contact of a Covid case and is ordered to isolate for 14 days. We let Curtis know explaining that this would mean overstaying the lease. Curtis seemed to not understand that the isolation period is a government order and threatened my housemate with squatting! Crazy!
Anyway, if you already feel like you have no rights as a tenant in NSW, Curtis certainly will not advocate for you in any case:)
