Our Big Kitchen reviews
19Recently volunteered here with my team colleagues and we had an amazing time! Absolutely appreciate the work this organisation does to help those in need. To make our corporate volunteer experience more fun, they provided us with an ingredient to base our dish off. No recipes, just cooked with what was available in the kitchen and from our hearts. We were all a bit nervous but it all worked out through teamwork and the various ideas from everyone. We felt proud with what we made (pumpkin and lentil bowls) and felt happy that these were delivered to the Ronald Mcdonald House. Thank you for the wonderful experience and can't wait to be back!
I recently had a volunteer cooking day at Our Big Kitchen, and it was a really enjoyable experience. Not only did we have fun cooking together, but we also learned about the important work that Our Big Kitchen does to support homeless people in the community. The speaker at the end of the day gave a powerful and moving speech on the importance of love and feeling like we are enough. It was a truly profound experience that left a lasting impression on all of us. I highly recommend Our Big Kitchen to anyone looking to give back to their community and learn more about the issues facing the homeless.
Great location fulfilling supreme purpose of feeding those who are less privileged and in need. Keep up your good work!
Australians were lucky to be given a national public holiday last Thursday to mourn for the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II. My wife and I decided to give back to the community by doing some volunteering with #Ourbigkitchen. I think we peeled 1000 bananas, mashed 100 avocados and whipped up so many kilos of biscuit dough for kids in Sydney, as well as prepping for the Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year’s) feast. Really inspiring day for us, we hope this post can help whoever’s reading to take some time off to do some good things for others:)
Obk is a great non profit organisation which makes meals for free who are in struggle and need for help, well however when I go to individually volunteer I have not had the best experience as people don't really welcome unless they know you. I have been ignores by other or volunteers numerous times, which I find pretty unpleasant, but however in the bright side I have met some really friendly volunteers who love to have a chat

Can't praise this organisation high enough. Such a wonderful community initiative run by the most incredible people. Despite being a Jewish organisation, they provide assistance to people in need from any denomination and accept anyone into their doors feeling welcome and valued!
We did a cooking preparation with a group of girls to celebrate two of the girls bat mitzvah. It was an awesome way to teach young people the value of food and not wasting food and helping out people who are less fortunate.
They don’t accept tinned stuff or frozen chicken even if it’s secure in the packaging with the expiry date clearly shown. The person answering the phone did not tell me that they had such strict standards. All this would have been fine except for the person who “greeted” me. I’ve donated all over the world literally and never have I met someone who was such a turn off. He scoffed at me when I first said I’d like to make a donation and he tsked away at my food at that point I said maybe this was a mistake. He then began hurriedly removing the groceries from the Uber I was in. Anyway may the people who need it enjoy the, fresh veggies, tea, fruit, tumeric, coconut products, tortillas, spices etc that I donated. I officially feel like I’m in the first world to have this kind of food scoffed at
OBK is a wonderful charity, providing thousands of meals each week to disadvantaged Sydneysiders and frontline workers including, but not limited to, the homeless, domestic abuse victims, cancer patients, the elderly and ambos. Run by a Jewish Yeshiva and open to all, this charity is a testament to the power of coexistence and collaboration.
What a great experience. The work they are doing is amazing.
I learnt a fair bit while there too. Thank you
Fiilled with amazing, caring people who create beautiful homemade meals for those who have it rough. Volunteers are always welcome too, so it's well worth a visit.
Did some volunteering with work here. Staff were very educated on how their work impacts our communities. Very open and honest about all servicing. Would really recommend supporting such a valuable company.
While I recognize that Our Big Kitchen has played a huge role in delivering for those with food insecurity, my experience as a volunteer was incredibly unpleasant. There is no way to sugar coat this, but I was bullied by the volunteers and by the man supervising me. Whenever I asked for help, they constantly shut me down or belittled me, and played jokes on me for their own amusement. The man supervising me constantly talked down to me, was rude to me, and unfairly targeted me based on my skills and shyness. Also if you are volunteering here, make sure that you say you have to go somewhere when you leave, because if you don’t, they will just make you work hours past your volunteer shift time. The fact that a culture like this exists is appalling, especially given OBK’s dogma, and its values. I strongly urge anyone who wants to give their time to disadvantaged Australians, to do so with another charity, as there are many others without the patronizing and disrespectful people here.
Not accessible to the general public. This service is for other charities to access, to help supply food to their registered clients who are participating in a rehabilitation program only.
Have been here twice with Horizon, the building company I work for and all of us really enjoyed helping prepare food for the homeless on both occasions.
Excellent charitable organisation that helps combat hunger and social isolation. The Rabbi is a legend!
Came for a day of cooking for the homeless. What a great initiative and organisation. You can sign up as a group or volunteer individually. You can even take some food that you cook to give away to the homeless afterwards. Fun for kids too. They do all types of events from team building corporate events to birthday parties, all for a good cause. Host Mauri (sp?) and head chef are so friendly and professional. Will definitely come back!
Went there with my company for a team building activity. Friendly staff and well organized event
