Old Helensburgh Station reviews
25 Totally worth the drive down at night. The whole of the top of the tunnel has so many glow worms.
Wear good boots it gets muddy.
In the old train tunnel is a massive amount of glow worms! It gets about knee deep with water (for reference im 5"6) after a good rain, however the view is beautiful, definitely planning on going back.
Awesome place to check out! Be mindful of the glow worms and never point a light or torch at the roof
A hidden gem, one of the most beautiful place to visit if you're someone who is interested in heritage buildings.the surrounding of the tunnel is very beautiful with a lot of vegetation and rocks
Recommend taking boots/gumboots or something you're happy to get muddy and wet. Also, take a torch to see where you are going in the tunnel. Turn it off when you're in deep enough and check out all the Glow Worms! Incredible!
Take some shoes/boots that don't mind a bit of mud - but well worth the short walk. The ground is uneven, and can be slippery, so those less able should be careful.
Coming prepared with waterproof overshoe covers allowed us to explore a little deeper into the tunnel and saw some glowworms. It is a short adventure by itself.
Man, great place. You can try. Just be prepared if you go. I want shoe covers and a flashlight.

Amazing tunnel with picturesque entrance covered by vines, roots and ferns. The path to get in is pretty muddy and sometimes slippery so prepare rubber boots or hiking boots with good grips to get through the entrance.
What a pity that at the time we visited, we didn't know it also has glowworms. We will definitely come back to see them.
Great place to see glow worms, although it is quite muddy. Would suggest you bring spare shoes. Entrance is not very obvious entrance at base of Old Sta road. If no parking in front of old station just park at the new train station. Would suggest taking a headlamp as you may need to steady yourself with your hands walking down tunnel. No toilets or water readily available. Well none that I could see.
An unusual spot with loads of character. Be prepared to get muddy shoes.
Its really sad how much rubbish is there though.
Glow worms are pretty cool to see. There are lots to see if you go in as far as you can! Wear gum boots very wet and muddy, take a torch!
Incredibly wet and muddy (it did rain the night before). Gum boots are a must but hip waders would have been even better. Once the tracks end the path switches between solid ground, deep water, and very thick mud.
Simply amazing view of the Glowworms.
A must for people who would love to explore nature. We say one of the biggest colony of Glowworms, much more than the Newenes tunnel.
Please carry some boots or covers for your footwear, otherwise you are in for really muddy and smelly shoes even in summer.
A very pleasant walk with gumboots! My grandchildren were wildly excited to see the glow worms
It would be better with a platform walk way in and out of the tunnel, very easy to fall over but it was good to see the glow worms.
Awesome tunnel, not many glow worms left. It’s pretty dark you’ll need a torch and some waterproof shoes as it is very muddy down there. You can’t reach the end of the tunnel as it is flooded. It’s located opposite the running railway station.
For years I wanted to check out Old Helensburgh station & tunnel so went today, love how the railway track is still present at station and continues a short distance into the tunnel which I walked through to a few hundred metres and become a bit to muddy, I just wore work boots and had a torch, the history plaque near station entrance is a interesting read, when I arrived near 2 Vera there is no sign so just look for a track lucky there was a local walker that pointed me in the right directions for both tunnels
Remember only point your torches on the ground! Never light up the tunnel or point at the roof. Glow worms are sensitive to light.
Amazing place and we are lucky to be allowed access. Always very muddy, gum boots are highly recommend. Use a low power beam torch only in the ground so you can see where to put your feet. Do not shine down the tunnel, on the walls or roof. The glow worms are amazing but very sensitive to light. You can also use red light. We went at dusk on a random week night and there were still other people there so it definitely can be busy.
