Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve reviews
73Beautiful views, paved track, starts with stairs, steep incline, not friendly for prams or walking difficulties.
When visiting the little harbour in Coffs Harbour make the effort to climb the small hill of muttonbird island - views incredible
Shearwater birds were currently not "in season". Views are great even without much wildlife. Still a good birding area and fully enjoyed visit.
Amazing walk! Begins with a steep paved path up to a mesh viewing ledge, which continues over the top of the hill. On the other side we were lucky enough to see whales breaching. Highly recommended
A short steep walk to the top but worth it. The 360 views from the top are amazing. When we went we were lucky enough to see some whales close by.
An incredible place to visit. Wonderful view of the coast and a great whale watching spot. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that some of the signage is quite faded and difficult to read. A shame as it's a great educational opportunity.
A pleasant walking experience in Coffs Harbour, thoroughly enjoyed this walk over the island, glad I strolled all the way to the other end of the walking path, otherwise would've missed this natural lookout looking over the ocean, although finding a car park can be a daunting task on a sunny day
Sehr schöner Spot mit einer tollen Aussicht. Auch ein toller Ort um schöne Bilder zu schießen. Speziell zum Sonnenauf- und Untergang.
Nice reserve with lots of birds. We went during sunset and the view and the walk was great. The birds made strange noise like crying. Funny and scary experience
If you’re visiting Coffs Harbour, you’ve got to get down to the Coffs Jetty marina to walk along the man-made Breakwall
To the top of Muttonbird Island. It’s free. East to moderate walk. There are minimal stairs - which makes only the breakwall accessible for people in wheelchairs. The view from the top is excellent. We visited in October and witnessed about a dozen whales breaching within about 300-400 metres of where we were standing. The whole walk to the top, and rest, took about an hour to do. But if you’re a fast walker, and you’re not liking out for whales, you could walk up and back within 25 minutes from the Park Beach carpark. There are some good eating locations along the breakwall - including the fisherman’s co-op which serves fish & chips. You’ll find a number of picnic huts at the Coffs end of the breakwall.
The best place to go to get a complete view of Coffs Harbour. Awesome views. A nice challenging walk. Just a warning it's a high wind area but very well worth it. Also take in the Jetty as well.

Fascinating island with lots of Burrows of wedge tailed shearwaters (mutton birds). Great views from the top of Coffs Harbour and the beaches around. The rack and walkway are well maintained. Well worth the visit
Absolutely beautiful and a great workout. The views are spectacular. My toddler loves the walk.
Our morning walk! Just beautiful, such a spectacular place in the world at Muttonbird Island Coffs Harbour.
Such an awesome stroll with a bit of steep climb to get to the top! Definitely worth going if you are around the area
The path and boardwalk are so well provided that you could walk up this hill in your dress shoes! What a beautiful view of the marina on one end and the expansive ocean at the other. A must when you visit Coffs Harbour!
We have visited the island each time we stopped over at Coffs Harbour. It's just a beautiful place to have a walk.
The panoramic views of Coffs Harbour city, the coast lines or just the vast Pacific Ocean at the peak are just fantastic.
The island is nesting site for seabirds but it's largely abandoned by feathered residents outside breeding season. This is also a good whale watching spot so I was told but we haven't visited with the right timing yet. The entire island is covered with green vegetation. There's a strangely minty smell in the air which reminds me of some south east Asia dishes.
The seawall connecting the island to the main land makes reaching it by foot very easy. It appears a lot locals walk the island as daily routine. However, after learning the seawall also enables rodents to reach the island for egg stealing I have a mixed feeling about it.
A beautiful walking path across the top of the island provides a glorious view of the harbour and neighbouring beaches.
There is a lot of movement around you with lizards, rats, birds and bugs scurrying about their afternoon activities.
One thing to note is that at either end of the island the path can be quite steep if you are walking with people who may struggle with the angle. At least it is smooth and not uneven.
Walk along the break wall towards the island. Mostly paved walkways over and around the island. Can be quite steep in places. Views all around are beautiful. Can be very windy out there. Information board about the Sheer water birds who nest on the island is good to read and informative. No pets allowed on the island and is closed when birds are nearing
