1 Finding myself disillusioned with the 'macho' men's barbershops, I thought I'd see if I could get a haircut at Ladies Lair. I stopped in, asked if they'd cut my hair.
To my astonishment, I was told "no, we only cut ladies' hair". I said, "but hair is hair, right? ". The lady said no.
I left the store, dejected. As a white male in western society, I've undoubtedly had an easier time than many other people. Accordingly, I embrace diversity, judge people on their merit (and not their gender or other traits) and afford people opportunities to excel, grow and show their worth.
Probably the only discrimination I've faced would be age-related - when I was young. I can't recall ever being denied service or opportunity because of my gender. Certainly, it's not a fun experience, but it gives me a good understanding of what it feels like to be on the receiving end of discrimination.
So, while I didn't get my hair cut, I feel like I've learned something. Thanks, Ladies Lair, for the valuable lesson!
