kuru Japanese restaurant reviews
63The Agedashi okra and the takoyaki were very enjoyable. We were pleasantly surprised that the tofu and seaweed salad was delicious. The pork steak and the black pasta were great as a combination. Who would have thought that black pasta would be this yummy!
The wife wanted Japanese and I wanted one we haven't been before, that's when I came across Kuru. Since it was the first time so I booked for an early dinner (6: 15), but when we got there the restaurant was already half full.
The waitress was nice and attentive in answering some of our questions, and once the order was taken food came on fairly quickly and consistently.
Now to the food:
The starters were above average with nice flavours. The soft shell crab with wasabi dip was delightful.
The assorted sashimi was nicely cut and fresh.
Grilled dishes were exceptional, especially the ox tongue, cooked fully yet still nice and soft. It's the same with the grill squid.
Dish of the night for me though would have to go to the flounder tempura, lightly coated batter deep fried perfectly to give the crunch when you bite into it yet the fish inside is still soft and hot. My only regret was that I was so full from the many dishes ordered that night that I could not finish the fried fish bones (also edible).
Overall I have to say my wife and I really enjoyed our meal there and will definitely go back there again.
I’ve been here probably 10 times. The food is so creative, simple yet delicate chic. I love their Ox tongue skewers coz it’s a thick cut so u can really taste the chewiness and meat. I also love the okra and the chefs sashimi plate as they use the sashimis that’s in season. The service is great. Their Japanese drinks are so presentable and photo friendly?
A frequent return customer here with my partner. Always great service, good food quality. The ox-tongue, the sashimi, all thick cut so u actually get the texture and fresh taste. Will continue to come back!
Great local Japanese restaurant with decent price and incredibly wide range of menus to choose from. They also offer various selection of wines and sakes including icy draft beer.
All the front of house staff are super friendly and accommodating with attention to detail. The quality and taste of the food is spectacular and left me amazed. 100% recommend!
They serve really good Pork Katsu Omurice - crispy coating with tender and juice pork fillet. Yummy! The portion and price are pretty decent too.
The assorted sashimi platter is more on the pricey side compared to other restaurants but most importantly they are fresh.
Pretty impressed with the quality of the food and friendly staff given that there are not many nice restaurants in St Leonard’s.
Love the food here! All the staff are very friendly too. We tried the omelette rice, udon, tempura and sushi. Every dish didn't dissapoint. Make sure you make booking for busy Friday night and weekends! Kids friendly too.
The Staff Friendly
Good Service
The Food Delicious
Many Kind The Beverage is Unique
I want go to the KURU again?
Beautiful place just near our residence, totally packed & served great sushi, sashimi & drinks. White wine was ok types not that great. Servers very pleasant too
Food serve was smaller than expected. (2 person banquet, 65 pp). 4 pcs nigiri sushi and 7 pcs of sashimi to share between two persons and this one plate counted as two courses. A piece of half soft shell crab each. Main dish pork chop was tiny. We ordered a bowl of rice to avoid going home hungry. I'll call it "tasting menu" instead of Banquet. No better value for banquet set menu. Except for this, yummy well presented food and friendly service.
Good food. Service unfortunately not great and atmosphere not too special. There are better places for authentic Japanese food for the same price.
This place is always our Plan B for Japanese or if other dinner plans fall through, as the girls are very accommodating they offer some delicious warm sake the food is always consistent & it's around the corner from where we live.
I would give a -5 star if there is such an option.
Utterly appalling, arrogant and inconsiderate customer service.
Walked into the store and ordered a takeaway was told that I needed to wait for 5-10 minutes which was ok but I had not eaten for seven hours by then and had another takeaway with me at the time. So I politely asked whether I could have a bit of the food I had with me whilst I was waiting as I was really hungry. Told me no and I had to go outside in the cold in order to eat.
I noticed my order the karaage was missing spicy mayo sauce, I asked and the girl replied to me in a rather rude manner saying “ Did you tell me you want spicy mayo sauce? ” Well, did you ask me? Or inform me that we needed to choose from one of the sauces? As the menus isn’t very clear.
Upon leaving I politely spoke to the waitress suggesting that it is not very kind to not allow a hungry guest to have a bit of food in such a circumstance and she said “but it’s the rules”. It’s the rule that you force your guest to starve? I live just upstairs and this is the second time that they are just being utterly arrogant towards us.
First time I was here, I was with a friend and we stayed a bit late close to closing time, there was still a table of six when we were leaving yet we were basically rushed out.
Disappointing experience and agree with the other comments: food is ok but definitely overpriced.
Edit: As shown in the response, this business is clearly facing challenges due to overpricing and consistent lack of understanding of customer service.
Had the katsu, partner had the sushi. Wasn’t impressed by either sushi had some weird sweet sauce on it that ruined it. The katsu was small and the quality wasn’t that good.
Overall disappointed as we had high hope due to the high reviews 2 stars as it was average and do not plan to come back.
Hi, do you have a staff who works in the kitchen always coughing loud? I live up stairs and it's very annoying he smokes and coughing very loud just downstairs. Could you ask him not to smokes and coughing under the residents' windows?
Good quality Japanese food at a reasonable price especially for the area. Had Udon, sushi rolls multiple times and the quality is high and consistent. Staff are friendly, restaurant is usually not too noisy.
I've eaten here on quite a few occasions and it's always been good; quick service and well priced.
Was amazing we loved soft shell crab, urchin nigiri and grilled Hokke with bones. Also love the tofu entrees
Came here twice for lunch on my slightly depressing half hour lunch break, and I've been ordering the omelette rice meal and they've managed to deliver our meals pretty quickly. Highly recommend the chicken schnitzel and eel one. The chicken one has the demi glace and you need that in your life.delicately savoury.
Tastes good but very overpriced. I was not expecting that little portion of edamame, miso soup and soft shell crab in a 6 course meal at the cost of $65 per person. From my understanding, a course meal means each of the person would have an individual course rather than sharing a small portion of edamame and one soft shell crab cutting in half. If I order these dishes separately, it might not cost $130 to be honest. But I did enjoy the two mains. Reasonable size and cooked perfectly. It would be a good place to dine in if your serve matches the price.
The other thing I’d like to mention is they spent too much time on takeaway orders so really slow with diners. We have waited almost one hour but only received the first 3 dishes. This also needs to be improved.

We definitely only had 6 courses (edamame, soup, soft shell crab, assorted sushi/sashimi, main and ice cream) and only one steak was ordered. The other main was salmon. Pls name what 8 courses you mean.
We had a $65 three course meal in a French restaurant 2 weeks ago, being served with decent portion of entree, main and dessert and they all tasted good.
Also, found one review 2 months ago being served with more than what we got and were only charged $45 per person. Can’t believe you increase the price and cut the fish carpaccio and saying it’s a fair increase!

See the last 2 images - $30 for 100g A5 wagyu, $26 for 160g less premium wagyu
We understand you changed the price due to increase in cost, but that increase compared to what has been served is unpleasant. Add one star as flavourwise it’s pretty nice.
