Knapsack Viaduct reviews
35We arrived at the carpark around 8am on a Sunday morning, it was busy but we got a spot. Then we walked to the bridge where just after the bridge on your right, the trail commences. Take the track under the bridge, follow the path over the creek then back under the bridge and up a really long staircase. You can check out Elizabeth's lookout then keep following the fire trail to Marges lookout. From here we double backed a little bit. There is a track parallel with a bike only track. If you follow this track it will lead you directly to the carpark! All up it took us about an hour and 20 minutes. A great walk!
This is an absolute YES. If I wasn't lazy I'd go to the bottom of the viaduct but I ended up chosing a shorter walk and it was still incredible.
Views are so pretty from the bridge and everything has Tarzan jungle vibes (And if you don't know who Tarzan is you're probably too young to be reading this)
Thank me later, bye
A beautiful, short walk to the viaduct. It is relatively flat with the slightest slope up to the viaduct.
This was originally the location of a railway up towards the mountain through sidings that you can still walk through (with the remnants of an old train platform). This was before the new tracks over at Lapstone were built and favoured. From my understanding, at some point, the old great Western highway utilised the viaduct before the M4 was built and connected to part of the great Western highway. If you continue past the viaduct, you will reach the m4. And at the other end of the bridge, you an still see markings on the asphalt from its time as a road, before it was converted to a walking track.
If you continue up the stairs after the viaduct, it'll lead you towards the old train platform and sidings. You can always walk down under the bridge to see the small creek that flows beneath it.
Beautiful old bridge. It's a quick easy walk on sealed road to the top of the bridge. The stairs down into the gully are steep, and dirt, but should be able to be managed by most. It's well worth a visit to see a piece of NSW history still standing proud.
Great place for a day of exploration if you're keen enough to walk to the bottom of the bridge, you'll be rewarded with what feels like the Amazon jungle and a great view of the bridge itself.
Great place for walking. Beautiful scenery, clean air. You can go up the mountain or go down the mountain. The bridge overlooks the city.
Nice walk to the bridge the view from underneath is beautiful however most of the walking track has been closed from the public for renovations so was unable to explore more which was a shame as it is a nice spot to walk.
Really impressive. It is a short walk from the carpark to the bridge and then a relatively easy walk to the bottom of the bridge.
Well worth a walk here. A reasonably easy walk when parking down the hill from the Glenbrook RAAF facility - although there are quite a few stairs at the knapsack viaduct.
It truly is a beautiful hike with such wonderful views of the forest along with some street art down at the train bridge, some of the Art is beautiful (I know not everyone agrees with street art, but some street art is beautiful)
Knapsack viaduct bridge is a beautiful old bridge that was originally built to carry trains up to the Lapstone Zigzag and later traffic on the Great Western Highway. It can now be easily accessed from Emu Plains via the old GWH to the Junction of Mitchell's Pass where it is an easy 10-15 min walk to the bridge. For the more adventurous, access via the Lucasville Platform or from Elizabeth Lookout is available. As of January substantial work to paths down from Elizabeth LO has closed accessed from here as well as access under the bridge itself. This is due to be completed soon and will make these paths much safer and easier to use.
Great little walk across a beautiful bridge that was once both, a rail and road crossing. It's a great place for an easy walk with children and pets.
Historic bridge way beyond its time. Definitely worth a look especially from below so one can truly appreciate the engineering that went into this forgotten peice of critical transport infrastructure.
Well worth the walk down under it ro truly appreciate its beauty and engineering from our early settlement times
An enjoyable walk with not many people around. First a quiet easy walk through the park on a paved road, then down the dirt tracks to underneath the viaduct. This is a good way to give our legs a good workout and workup a healthy sweat.
A great nature walk, very peaceful and good for families and walking the dog. Got some great shots on my main camera looking out over Penrith and also of the Knapsack Viaduct. You can go at your own pace and stop along the way for fantastic views.
An incredible bridge. Marvellous engineering feat and excellent stone work. Easy walk in and very interesting
A beautiful structure, there’s a relatively easy path at the northern end of the bridge that takes you down and underneath you you can marvel at the beautiful craftsmanship that built this great viaduct!
Nice quiet place for a walk. The trip to the bottom of the viaduct is well worth it, awesome view
Ayo this place is so awesome i tan full speed right across and felt like a superhero i’ve never felt so athletic before!
