We had high hopes for this place, but we were sorely disappointed.

My girlfriend and I went there for lunch on Saturday, no one else was there, we both had chicken katsu donburi bowl. The chicken katsu coating was completely soggy and there was way too much sauce – the rice was soaked, my girlfriend couldn’t eat it. It was all very salty and the rice seemed like it was frozen. Everything seemed like it was frozen, or at least pre-made a day or two before and just thrown in the microwave. Soggy and disappointing. The miso soup was also watery and just a cheap ready-made packet you can get from the supermarket.

It’s strange that there are good reviews for this place. Maybe the other reviewers have never been to Japan, or maybe the restaurant only cooks fresh in the evenings. It’s a shame, because Newy is lacking a good place like this… I guess we’ll have to keep looking.

A great Japanese restaurant with delicious and authentic food, and a nice selection of products for sale as well. Highly recommended!

Had dinner here. Made a booking because I wasnt sure how busy it would be. I left a message and they called me back a short time later to confirm. I'm glad I booked because it was really busy! Only one man serving meant he was clearly rushed but once we ordered it was very quick. The food is very authentic, delicious and very good serve for the price! The cute restaurant being in the shop is also very Japanese. Will be going back and taking others with me!

Great business idea of combined restaurant and convenient shop.

However, zero customer service.
Menu is too small to read and the photos are too small and dark to see. No description on the dishes either which basically makes the menu useless for me.

Ramen is ok with a pinch of pink ginger to warm me up in the winter night. Everything else is just average and the combination of ingredients not really blended together.

Excellent ramen. I had Kitami Ramen and the soup was simply divine, down to last drop. A quality I didn't expect so far from Tokyo. Atmosphere is very, very homey: a charm by itself to me.

Nice home made Japanese food.
I went here most days for lunch when I was in the area.
Oyako don is a nice filling dish that comes with miso soup.
Also handy that they sell a few groceries as well.

The food here is always so delicious, and really authentic Japanese!

I come from a place that has allot of china towns and I’ve had allot of authentic Asian food. This place captured exactly that and even more, the culture and feeling you get when you walk inside make the meals a total and joyful experience. Thank you kitami your staff were so kind, I’ll be coming back for my ramen fix for sure, thank you!

Ordered the eel don and kitami ramen. Tasted like homemade Japanese food, but the servings were rather small for the price. The shop was very busy with lots of takeaway orders.

Delicious Udon, gyoza, agadashi tofu and beef don.
The lunch sets are great.
Wonderful service always.

I absolutely love this place! My favourite in all of Newcastle. I always order the Tempura Prawn, which comes with this amazing crunchy tempura seaweed.

Can't get enough, give these guys a go. I was sad the hear one of their restaurants had closed after lockdowns, so support their beautiful fresh food in Carington if you can (available on Uber Eats too).

Authentic delicious Japanese food, warm welcoming mom& pop shop - simply the best Japanese in Newcastle!

Really great flavours. All meals great. Ordered Katsu curry, teriyaki, and shoyu ramen. Second time ordering from here and all meals perfect each time. Grocery is great too, with some extra flavours in Ramune and Pocky that I haven't seen in Newcastle elsewhere.

The chicken katsu don bowl and okonimiyaki seem to be pre-pared and then reheated in microwave, no crunch / rubbery / dull. The miso soup was cold. Sushi is not available for order (premade available). With exception of the freshly cooked delicious mixed tempura, the food is lacklustre and reheated however prices are as high as other restaurant freshly preparing dishes. Service was good.

Their ramen is on point. The broth is really tasty. Rice bowls are good too. Takoyaki for entree is a must. Cap off your meal with matcha ice cream for dessert, you can buy it from their small grocery.

Ordered mixed tempura udon - $25. Tempura and udon are cooked fine, but for 25$ u only get 1 prawn tempura and everything else is just vege tempura. It's a bit misleading to call it a 'mixed' tempura.maybe vegetarian udon will be better? You can get much more value at other restaurants at that price i'd say. Overall food not bad but very stingy and misleading for sure.

Always a good meal though I do miss their sake sampler plate they had in their king St restaurant

Beautiful and delicious food and nice people. Will look forward to dining in or having takeaway next time! The variety of groceries is very limited, but all authentic Japanese food. Enjoy!

Great mum and pop shop. Fantastic food, simple menu. The Agadashi tofu and karage chicken was just great!
Not a full restaurant as it is a restaurant/store.
Will definitely come back frequently.
