Jambo Jambo African Restaurant reviews
64Can not recommend this place enough! Friendly service and the most delicious food. The owner is usually there to greet you and we trusted him to bring us whatever dishes he wanted and he did not disappoint! The combination platter is a must.
We first went in and it was busy and a kind atmosphere. We got seated straight away and there was no wait. We got sambusas, kitfo, miser, doro wet, lamb dibs, aleja and they were all amazing. The owner and all staff were so amazing and friendly after ordering the food came out fairly quickly. The Ethiopian jebena coffee was so amzing and delicious. I am on a vacation and wanted to try some good authentic Ethiopian food as im Ethiopian. I would 100% recomend and come again when I visit.
Mind-blowing. Best feed I have had in ages. Highly recommended. Bring a friend. Big serves.
We came back a second time with our furry pooch (outdoor seating; no shelter from rain) and received amazing service from the boss! He was very accommodating to our food requests and even gave our little one a special treat (safe to say she was super thankful and gobbled it all up)! Excellent food and excellent service:) will definitely be back
Dinner for 8 got recommended 2 platters of 4 cost $220/ platter divide by 6 dishes so each item on the platter say $33/ dish taking out the cost for entrees which was 2 bites. Got recommended 2 chicken dishes when it came in the platter was a drumstick, a boiled egg and spoon full of sauce, goat dish even worse 2 PCs of bone with sauce @ $ 33: 00 & all the rest of the dishes all the same, when asked the wait staff one said it’s a big drumstick, the other said the chef is in the kitchen for 15hrs a day. The owner joseph, sees this going out of the kitchen and is oaky with this. Hang your head in shame Joseph.
Injera w/assorted curries
WOW! This was a flavour BOMB We got an assortment of curries from vegetarian to meat.they were so full of flavour and perfectly seasoned. The meat was so tender and the assortment was a great variety. PAIRED AMAZING with the injera! The injera bread was tangy and soft and it was just so addictive. It was awesome! Not only that, Joseph the owner made our night so memorable and he hooked us up with an extra curry! He was just an amazing soul, taught us about the culture, origins of food and gave his best recommendations. We loved it. Great value and awesome taste:) Keen to have it again!
Entree
Unique entree with different flavours. Sweet, spicy, sour and salty. Ticked all the boxes! The bread with honey was a hit and would definitely order again!

but this was so good.if you get a chance to eat this, you wont regret it.
Heard about this restaurant, it was hyped but unfortunately am disappointed.
The food is mediocre at best. We (3 people) had the set meal of starters, 3 mains and coffee. The starters (we couldn't choose) were the raw beef dish which was lacking flavour and the samosa style lentil dish which was alright. Both were 2 small pieces in total for each of us. The mains were alright.the lentil dal curry dish was fine but the 2 meat dishes were simply not very good. They were just.ok. For $45 per person it was very disappointing. The beef was over cooked and tough. The lamb was better but still very average. The injera or crepe style base was good (bitter but an acquired taste). Overall we felt that the portions were meager but later realised it was quite filling. We didn't leave hungry but not satisfied either. Coffee was good though.
Friendly service
The service was fantastic.very warm and welcoming.
Food was delicious and interesting - it was the first time we had tried Ethiopian. Recommend as a relaxing casual dinner venue if you're keen to try something different. The kids (11yo and 9yo) loved it.
This is my second time visiting and I loved it just as much. The staff are so lovely and really look after you.
We started with delicious spicy mince beef in lettuce. It was so good, we asked for seconds. The fried pastry filled with lentils paired so nicely with the sweet sauce.
The main course is this huge share plate. We use this spongy flatbread called injera to eat the food and it soaked up so much flavour. We got many refills, you can't forget the extra injera!
We ended the meal with pineapple ice cream and coffee.

Great feed. Staff is incredibly accommodating and constistently checking in on you and topping you up. Great mixture of meats and vegan options and all very tasty. Would highly recommend for something different than just sitting in your traditional restaurant.
Three of us went with great enthusiasm. However, the next day we all fell sick. The meat may have not been properly cooked. Loved the service but it was sad that all three of us had gut issues the next day.
Amazing food, amazing service, reasonable pricing, healthy & delicious.
Recommend again and again, this is one of the best restaurants I have tried in Sydney, super authentic vibes.
It was my first time trying African food. Definitely worth experiencing it:) food was very filling and staffs are so friendly.
I was skeptical at first, but let me tell you as a follow Ethiopian, this place is amazing. The food was prepared with care and authenticity. The service is superb! Jambo Jambo brings Ethiopia to Australia.
We had a good night out at Jambo Jambo Africa last night, sharing a platter for 2 with a choice of 6 dishes. We went for 2 vegan and 4 meat dishes. Service was great and attentive, and if you haven't had the experience of eating with your hands, you have to try it. I just wish my beer had been colder and the beef and lamb dishes were quite similar tasting and a little tough. Minor issues on an otherwise great night, will def be back.
First time trying Ethiopian food and absolutely loved it! Platter was delicious and the staff were really friendly and generous.
Don’t come here if you’re hungry! The owner was rude and unfriendly right from the start, even as he showed us to our table. We were pushed to take the platters rather than al la carte. The main platter costs $100 for two people and $30 for each extra person, so $190 for the five of us. The beer cost $9 each and were bland. The two entrees were tasty, but the main course platter would suit three people not five. We asked politely for more food after we easily finished the platter, and were told there’s a scoop of ice cream or coffee for dessert. A different waiter told us later that the $100 platter apparently has ‘unlimited top-ups’ but when we then asked for some top-ups, the owner refused as they’d already taken our plates away. In the end, it took a serious argument with the owner, and we were given another smaller platter. The food was tasty, but the arguments with the owner totally ruined the atmosphere for us and left us feeling very upset. I strongly recommend dining elsewhere - give this restaurant a miss!
Absolutely delicious food. Staff ware super friendly checking in on us all the time and topping up our injera. I got recommendations for this place from several friends so my expectations were high. It really delivered!
I was very excited to try an Ethiopian restaurant as I have read many 5 starred reviews and every time I walked past Jambo Jambo Africa, it was full of people. So it definitely seemed worth a try. Words like burst of flavours, scrumptious, tasty, highly recommended, top notch Ethiopian — have been engraved in my mind.
We had the combination plate for 2 with 3 dishes - $75.
The mixed entry - which was two sambosas and two servings of kitfo. The sambosa was quite tasty if you like lentil. The kitfo was somewhat underwhelming.
For the three dishes we have chosen 3 meat dishes -
Doro alicha wot (mild) — chicken leg
Key Wot — beef
Lamb tibs
Basically, all the dishes were served on a huge plate with one pancake — injera bread, laid underneath; one pancake sliced and rolled in a short cigar shape for dipping.
The injera bread - tasted more like a pancake rather than bread and very bland. I don’t mind the spongy texture but expected some kind of flavours and there’s none. I understand that I supposed to hold the injera and dip into the sauce/curry/stew and eat with them but so is a naan bread, roti or simply a piece of sourdough and they are a lot tastier.
Lamb tibs was our least favourite dish. While the lamb was tender it has no flavour. It supposed to have been cooked in onions, black pepper, garlic, rosemary and special Jambo sauce but the dish tasted like a simple Asian stir fry but bland and unexciting.
Doro alicha wot, tasted like a very mild yellow curry dish but there’s no depth in flavours.
The beef key wot tasted better but it reminded me of a rogan josh or vindaloo dish which were both superior in flavours.
It was a very disappointing experience for me and it was actually quite expensive for the quality and amount of the food served.
I don't mean to be unkind but if this is the top notch Ethiopian restaurant some reviews said it is — to me it really is just a very distant and way poorer cousin of Indian food. I hope I will get a chance to experience a better Ethiopian restaurant.
Thought we would try this Ethiopian cuisine after walking past many times. Food is not bad. Took 45mins for a starter while everyone around us got there food instantly.luckily we weren’t in a rush and we assumed they had forgotten, so didn’t really care as we were chatting anyway.
Once the food finally came the owner abruptly tried to tell us how to eat it with the bread etc then kept acting like we weren’t hungry being somewhat strange mannered as if it’s our fault that he had forgotten to serve us. Weird way to treat a customer, not sure making people feel uncomfortable is preferable.
Once we finally finished and decided to pay, the owner continued to question us by saying - ‘ you weren’t hungry ‘ implying we didn’t eat or that there was some sort of issue. A strange comment considering we ate 3/4 of the meal and spent $140 on an average experience. Very weird guy.the other staff were great.
