16 A fantastic Open Day at the Illawarra Beekeepers Club September 2023 lots of interesting information and how fabulous was it that people were able to dress in protective clothing and pretend to be an actual beekeeper, kids young and old ones loved it.
Kids craft activities, a delicious BBQ and cakes with tea and coffee.
Stocked up with honey from the club and even the weather was great
Congratulations on a terrific event.
I was so excited to get involved until I realised they decided to use the open day to promote innately divisive political propaganda.
Saving the bees is something every demographic can come together and agree upon. Why on earth would you then choose to be so blatantly divisive and use a beekeeping event to promote apartheid? Smh if you cared to notice the polls you might realise you’re alienating over half of Australians by doing this, how is that saving the bees?
Great Bee Garden. You should join if you have, or are thinking about having, a honey bee hive.
Really friendly bunch - we did the beginners bee keeping course which was really informative, plenty of hands on experience, a great lunch and most importantly a delicious jar of honey to take home!
Lovely community with experienced keepers who were very willing to share their time, expertise and advice. Highly recommended!
Great club, super knowledgeable, friendly people.a great source of info for beekeepers.some even make mead.
As a member of another beekeeping association further south I can say that this association is top class. I have visited for talks, for open days and even took a bunch of newbie beekeepers up there for an event. I was very impressed with the hexagonal meeting space with library, shop, honey shed and the quality of the guest speakers each time I have been there is excellent. The apiary is wonderful. There are examples of many types of hives - not just the traditional Langstroth - but also 'newer' less known types such as the Kenyan Top Bar. They also have native stingless bee hives (TC's) and one member brought in their Hockingsi to show the difference between TC's and TH's. I have also always felt very welcomed there. A warm, social and educational experience, every time.
Firstly the honey from the Illawarra Beekeepers Association is delicious and it's great to support this local group. Also the bees wax is very well priced and is really good quality, especially for creating beeswax wraps. Beware that the shop is only open on Thursdays between 9am & 12pm
We wanted to thank Michael Sparks for assisting us with bee removal at our property in Gymea Bay. Michael was very prompt, professional and very educationally informative. He shared lot's of information with us whilst taking every care possible to secure and relocate the bees. We would not hesitate in recommending Michael if you ever need assistance.
Had a fun and informative afternoon at the Open Day - so much knowledge and willingness to share with everyone.oh.and great honey too!
Great place to learn hands on, thanks to all the members for their advice and help. The beginners course was thorough to give a great aspect to beekeeping.highly recommended
Fantastic place to learn about beekeeping. They run beginners courses, open days and a wonderfull apiary.
Great local club and place to buy local honey.
Friendly and helpful with heaps of info on anything bee related.
Extremely helpful group and a great way to learn about bees. Whether you want to keep bee hives yourself or just want to know more about them they can help.
Couldn't be more thankful to the Illawarra Bee Club. I had a huge hive of bees in an old lounge, the guys gave up their time to come and help me out. From the very first phone call to the club, they couldn't have been more helpful. Peter and his partner were extremely professional and got the bees out of a very tricky place. The guys explained a lot of the process and were extremely knowledgable. Couldn't of done it without their help.
The Illawarra Beekeepers Assoc.is a member of the NSW Amateur Beekeepers and their apiary and museum in Sutherland is unlike anything else you'll visit. They have their own colonies of bees in the bee garden, several beekeeping courses are scheduled each year with visitors and guests welcome to see and learn about the wonderful world of apiculture. A must see.
