Government House reviews
25Got a rare chance to step into Government House NSW – totally recommend it for anyone into old buildings and history. It's a close-up experience with this grand and elegant piece of architecture. A must-visit for history buffs!
Incredible house with an amazing historical tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and seemed to be passionate about her job. Made our day out in the botanical gardens. Would highly recommend to anyone who has a spare hour or two in the city.
An interesting place; beautiful house, steeped in history and well worth a visit. Go for a guided tour if you get the chance, as our guide was a fountain of knowledge and easily answered any questions we had. Highly recommended, if you want to take in some culture while in Sydney.
It’s open here on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and it’s free to come in. There are shopping guides available for you to participate in. There is a large garden and the buildings inside are very useful for understanding the history of New Wales.
A timeless beauty designed by Edward Blore (who worked on Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle) and adapted to local conditions. Accesible to the general public and enhanced by hosts demonstrating knowledge and professionalism. Highly recommended.
Tour was great. Jazz on the lawns with the New South Wales police band was awesome. Well done New South Wales!
My friends and I visited and there were two signs. One on the left and one on the right that says something along the lines of no entrance. We assumed the sign on the right meant not entering inside the building and the sign on the right meant not to walk on the garden area. It should’ve been placed in the middle. We walked passed because only saw the black rope blocking the area further behind so we just assumed that it was that area that’s just block. Suddenly the rude security guard told us we weren’t allowed to be there in a condescending tone like we were creatures below the level of average intelligence. He could’ve politely said we weren’t allowed to be there. Maybe because we’re Asian and we look kinda like young teens. Such a rude guy.
Place this sign in the image below in the centre of the walkway so others won’t make the same mistake.
A beautiful house set in the Botanical Gardens. It is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Tickets are free but are provided on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are available from the Gatehouse, which is next to the main gate.
You need ID when registering for the tour. For tourists, this means your passport.
On the day I went, the house had been opened to celebrate the coronation of King Charles, so I did not do the tour.
I was able to see a number of tge fountains rooms and the gardens. Staff were happy to discuss the rooms and answer any questions.
The tours accommodate the needs of people who have a disability. This includes people with vision loss or blindness. Uou are added to advise the guides at the time of booking of your needs.
Free tour of this beautiful house and amazing botanical gardens to relax in and enjoy at the end. Highly recommended.
Lived in Australia all my life, I am now 70 and always wanted to see inside Government House, was so impressed with the building, also the changes in Governor Generals over those years.
在澳洲日當天,呢度向外開放,我哋入內參觀,欣賞內部嘅建築結構及華麗嘅裝飾擺設。
On the day of Australia Day, this place was open to the public. We visited inside as well as admired the internal architectural structure and gorgeous decorations.
Government House is always great, for those of us lucky enough to be invited. It has such a great history, and has absolutely brilliant British architecture, overlooking Sydney Harbour. Having a beer and entrees with Governor's and Premiers is pretty cool too
An amazing experience, toured by a volunteer, Pat, entirely on our own,
Steeped in history and amazing detail in an incredible position set in stunning surounds with epic harbour views acros immaculate grounds, from the richest of carpets and portraits, to the most amazing exhibition of Aboriginal art, I would recommend to any that get the opportunity to take this tour
Recently re-opened this historic landmark has the most wonderfully manicured gardens, as impressive as the house itself! This dive into history is something every NSW resident should get out and about to see! The first Sunday of the month showcases a services Jazz ensemble, with the public invited by Her Excellency to join in the festive atmosphere with their friends and family. The perfect afternoon to pack a picnic lunch and listen to some spectacular tunes.
Driving there with map no guard to control car for entry. Suddenly a security guard and ranger came out give me a fine because didn’t read the non government vehicle allow for enter. This area no parking area but ranger working in the botany garden. So funny! What car she gonna to check. This job suppose under security guard. And please exchange the sign it doesn’t clear for driver to read on the road. If doesn’t allow other car for entry. Who can stop at the traffic light and read it.
Beautiful location, wonderful grounds and gardens and if you're lucky you can catch a glimpse of an ongrounds band playing music all whilst overlooking Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and the Botanic Gardens. An often overlooked treasure, highly recommended to visit.
Stonewall refurbishment with traditional techniques used and the original Rocks number to go back in place
Government House being built after 1937
makes it Victorian era architecture. And what a charming sandstone mansion it is.
Including the formal style landscape.
This is a definite stop if you want to get out of the city for a little while. Stroll through the beautiful gardens that surround it, looking over the harbour. Well recommended.
Excellent tour of Government House from a well informed Allan. Thank you. Living in the UK we sort of take great and historic houses for granted. But, this house tracks the modern history of Australia from the beginning of the first European colony. There was a real "Downtown Down Under" feel to the place and certainly a place with enough history for its own miniseries.
