Ok here goes.

Well a lot has happened in the last 6 months for sure. I've been a bit hesitant to share, as I want those who reads this to take it as a positive journey for me and a need for change. Not a negative stance on it, as pitta or attention seeking. I want people to read this and think there is always options in our nursing/midwifery careers.

The start of my 6 month journey is a sad one. I lost a very important person in my life, my grandma who I was very close to. The sadness and the rawness this brought, that we are not here forever and you have one life to work it out. This made me make a final decision, after lots of contemplating, to leave a job of 22 years. I thought this job was part of me and made me for who I was. Which I now know is so not true after working for ‘Evolve’.

In a nut shell, I resigned from the job and left in the February and now, with the help from ‘Evolve’ I plan on working 5 weeks on as a remote midwife and 7-12 weeks off to be with my family.

This was a joint decision made with my husband and my 2 children aged 10 & 13.
My husband could not be more supportive in all of this. From pushing me to get out of my comfort zone, to him parenting sole for 5 weeks to reassuring me over the phone the first week, as I cry asking what the hell have I done. I always find the first 2 weeks of each contract the hardest. Then it’s like a cloud has lifted and it’s all good again.

My agent Ciara from Evolve’ also knows my story and my struggles and like a big sister rings me with the best advice. At the end of our conversations I always joke and say “how much do I owe you for the counselling session”.

So here l’am only a few days left of my 5 week midwifery contract on Thursday Island. Feeling so privileged to be caring for the most beautiful women and their babies, that the good far out weighs the bad every time.

Thank you Evolve for saving my career as a midwife when I was so close to walking away from it for good.

Vicky, consulting agent from Evolve Talent, has been awesome throughout the process. Coming from New Zealand and looking for work, a school for the children, and a rental property, is not easy. However, Vicky was patient enough to listen to our concerns and understood our situation and the setbacks that we had encountered.
