Calle Rey reviews
42The food was very average, and underwhelming for a vegan restaurant. The drinks were also below par. Overall very very mid experience
Had dinner at Calle Rey on a Tuesday night. We went for the AllTheTacosSetMenu so we could try them all and it was absolutely brilliant! Food is amazing!
The restaurant was a bit too noisy.
Although I didnt appreciate the service that much as i felt rushed to place the order. To then being kinda left unattended throughout the rest of the night.
Overall i still recommend it!
The dishes at this place are incredible. It is a Mexican "fusion", and the entire menu is plant-based and the flavors are truly incredible!
I’ve been here many times and it is absolutely delicious! I love that the whole menu is gluten free, making it a safe place for coeliac diners. My only complaint is that one particular waiter pressures you into giving a tip (by specifically asking you if you would like a tip and standing over and watching you).
Caught up with some friends and had the pleasure of having Luke as our waiter.
Absolutely amazing service and recommending the perfect dishes based on our likes and dislikes.
Ambience was great and seating so comfortable that we didn't realise we were one of the last to leave.
Will be back again to try the other dishes
Thank you and great job
This hidden gem has one of the best vegan food in Sydney! Has a very good ambience and ample of parking available near by! The cauliflower wings are a must try! We also loved the rolls and nachos! Mocktails and cocktails were amazing too! The staff are very welcoming and the service is quite quick! Make sure you reserve a table before you go here as it gets pretty busy!
Im not vegan but the set menu here was so great, affordable, tasty, and cruelty free! Get the largeritas, theyre fun.
Check out my food Instagram @erinxeats for more!
If you are out here, you should definately try their
1. Buffalo Cauliflower Wings
2. Smoked Chiken Taco
3. Rest.
Buffalo wings is a must try, I can't stress enough.
Also, if you are ordering any of the Piscoritas, those are huge glasses. Holding it is a challenge. The staff will tell you beforehand. The taste is worth the struggle thou.
Will definately revisit.
Friendly staff and fast service! I highly recommend the carnitas tacos and the al pastor mushroom quesadillas! We also tried some mocktails and they all pretty good!
The food was great but the atmosphere felt a little cold. Probably just an off day so will retry.
This vegan restaurant was so authentic and interesting. The food was just amazing and the service was just excellent. We came with my dog and the waitress was so welcoming and kind and arranged a table for us outside. Honestly such a breath of fresh air to the normal places we go to.
Hands down one of the best vegan restaurants I’ve been to in Sydney, serving very authentic, cruelty-free Mexican food.
We went for one of their banquet options which was excellent value for money. The vegan seafood tacos we’re mind-blowing and every single dish was fresh, well presented and simply delicious. 100% recommend, this will be my new go to place in Newtown.
Loved the food and the table service was great. Place was a bit cramped though, and most seats are high seats.
I’ve got takeout before and dined in also. Both were a nice experience for a low-key night, but not amazing and nothing ‘stand-out’.
- staff aren’t particularly friendly or positively add to the experience
- some menu items are quite nice but some others are unbalanced in flavours and/or textures. It feels a bit hit and miss
- I do appreciate that (it seems like) most items are made in-house. There would be a bit of prep time
- bar drinks are okay but could definitely do with some big improvements in how they’re made
- portion sizes are good
- pricing is a little high for the food quality
- atmosphere is enjoyable & the music is lively
- The servicespace is a bit clumsy - think - plastic cups for water, small cluttered tables, table and chair heights don’t match up, etc
- service is fast

Good place, nice ambience, lots of options especially for vegan people as my partner is vegan, i eat meat but loved the flavour even though it was vegan chicken
I was honestly really happy with the food, especially when everything is fully plant based! The quality assurance is amazing and the staff were friendly!
Food was great, fine dishes, none to fault.
Price was more than ok.
The mural at the back was amazing, couldn't take my eyes from the beauty and the meaning of that face.
It was a lovely night.
Food is great, waitress are always attentive, ambience. Definitely recommend this place if u r a
I’m not vegetarian nor vegan, and I actually liked this place a lot. The dishes were well made and very tasty. My favorite dish was the BBQ chicken wings and the sauce on the nachos plate was delicious.
We had set tasting menu which is Nachos and charred corn and two Taco one is Taco fried calamari and California roll and churros for dessert. Everything is amazing.
We will come back.
